Wow. I found this video post by Dembloggers.com via dKos. Watch the video. There you have the state of our democracy.
This morning Rep. Sensenbrenner, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee was leading a committee hearing looking into the renewal of Patriot Act.
Mr. Sensenbrenner decided that he didn’t like the tone of the meeting and simply got up and left but not before he criticized the witnesses who came and gave their testimony to the committee.
After he left the microphones were switched on and off while the Democratic members of the committee continued to discuss the renewal of the Patriot Act.
Sensenbrenner is apparently not known for a sense of civility. However, I think this crosses into the realm of anti-democratic. I’ll join in calling for the media and for Rep. Sensenbrenner’s colleagues to criticize him as much as or more than Dean has been criticized for his remarks (which, as a non-elected official, do little more than tick a few people off).

I don’t underestand what he did wrong. Did he leave a hearing? (common practice) or was he rude to witnesses? what did he do?

From what I could tell, not only did he leave the hearing, but as the Chairman, closed the hearing (one assumes prematurely by the protests) just because he didn’t like what he what witnesses were saying.
This guy should have his chairmanship taken away from him. His actions were more than inappropriate. Better yet, I’d like the media to cover it so maybe his constituants can reconsider their vote at the next available election.

I caught the last 40 minutes or so of this hearing when they replayed it on C-SPAN last night. I know Rep. (Non)Sensenbrenner is a tool, but this was just ridiculous. The hearing was a complete insult to democracy. I was very proud of the democrats on the committee. Especially Rep. Conyers who continues to provide such dignified, reasonable dissent and Rep. Jackson Lee who made me all teary with her talk about the need for the US to avoid a return to dark moments in our history so we can be a shining city on the hill.
I am so glad that the C-SPAN cameras continued to roll after Sensenbrenner’s hissy fit, but I wonder how many people will actually see this. What will it take for people to actually pay attention?
The PATRIOT act scares the beejeebers out of me. I don’t have a very high level of confidence that the dems will be able to stop this reauthorization. Someone please (PLEASE!) prove me wrong.
I’ve already fired off notes to both the Judiciary Committee and the Democratic Members (fingers crossed that my links work) Lynne you need a preview button!
I guess it’s just screaming into the wind, but I felt I had to say something.
I’m not bothered at all about what Howard Dean said. He’s not the most elegant speaker, but compared to W he’s brilliant.
