Plans Are Being Made In MA

by at 11:09 pm.

I’m in contact with the UJP folks, and it looks like there’s more-than-idle talk of organizing a campaign to ask for more homes in the area offering space to refugees, and enough cash to rent a bus (or three, or more) and get people stranded homeless in the Gulf up to New England to live with those generous people while things settle (whether that’s rebuilding or relocation). Then of course ongoing fundraising to support these people once they are here.

Nothing logistical is decided yet, but we will be contacting churches, businesses, and other orgs and will need homes with space and beds available, and of course, money to make it happen. I will keep everyone informed. If you want to be part of logistics planning, or want to offer space, let me know!

NPR last night aired a story about a Mississippi choir which was in Chicago at the time of the hurricane and are now somewhat stranded with no homes to return to and rising food/hotel bills (to which Chicagoans are admirably helping out with)

Any word whether there are families in the Boston area in similar straits to the choir in Chicago? Tourists with no home to return to?
This is the big weekend when students arrive at the area colleges. When I was a freshman, my whole family drove me up. Some of those folks might be stuck for housing, too.

That’s a great point, and one that should be explored.

How would one go about finding these people? I can check out Craigslist.

I don’t know. I scanned the online Boston Globe for any articles with the local angle, but didn’t notice anything. Possibly Universal Hub or the Boston LJ community might have resources to put an ear out…

  4. Wes F. in North Adams Says:

Over here in North Adams, Bill Gideon (owner of Gideon’s Restaurant and Gideon’s Luncheon and Nightery) immediately juggled his entertainment schedule at the Nightery so that Chip Wilson, a New Orleans-based guitarist who fled just before the storm, could play a couple of fundraising gigs.

This is bringing out the best in people. Sad that this is what it takes.

Hi - I don’t have money to donate, but I do have a home a can share. I would love to be able to help a misplaced family — especially with the holidays around the corner. I can’t imagine the pain and despair they’re going through. Lynne — if you could email me personally, I’d love to provide you with more information.
