All right, whether or not the debate is ongoing about the Katrina response fiasco being Chertoff’s and the DHS’ fault or FEMA’s and Brownie’s, we all know that Michael Brown had no background in emergency management, right?
But what does the Bush administration do after one of their friends screws up? Why, give them a promotion - or if that’s politically untenable, give them a high paying consulting gig. At the agency they screwed up in.
CBS News correspondent Gloria Borger reports that Knocke told her that technically Brown remains at FEMA as a “contractor” and he is “transitioning out of his job.” The reason he will remain at FEMA about a month after his resignation, said the spokesman, is that the agency wants to get the “proper download of his experience.”
During that time, Brown will advise the department on “some of his views on his experience with Katrina,” as he transitions out of his job, Knocke told the Associated Press.
Dude, we’re paying him to stay on and tell us how he fucked up? Why can’t we just make him testify in front of Congress or some other investigative body? Letting New Orleans drown makes Brownie a better expert at managing crisises than before he resigned? Oh, the logic of the Bush administration. [Via AMERICAblog.]

Brown should have been fired and Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin should have resigned.
What’s really scary is the amount of money Gov. Blanco is asking for in an effort to rebuild New Orleans. The big dig is going to look pretty tame in comparison to this. I guess we just stack this bill on top of all the others that have been pushed through by a bunch of Republicans that spend like drunken sailors.
Doesn’t anybody in Washington understand that spending like this is going to get us into allot of trouble?

Did they, in the 80s? Just sayin’.
Of course, we had that budget well under control oh…say…most of the 90’s under Clinton.
Look, there’s two things happening here - one, is the Republican movement to bankrupt the government and “drown it in the bathtub” once and for all. The other is the rank giveaway of tax money and tax breaks to cronies in big industry. When the house of cards finally falls, though, you can bet that the top 1% of the country will be the last to share the wealth. Trickle down, my ass.
We could easily spend this money in New Orleans to rebuild. If we weren’t spending a couple hundred billion in Iraq. And if we recinded those damn tax cuts for the wealthy.
These folks don’t give a whit about the country or its people. Just their friends in high places.

Don’t forget the Prescription Drug Plan giveaway. What a disaster.

The federal fiscal year is almost over, and we will soon hear how well the administration has reduced the debt (lie!). Let’s look at the total debt of the federal government as reported by the Treasury(below). You can see it has increased by about $543B so far. However, you can be sure you will be reading about a number in the order of $350B, as the current year social security surplus will be used to prop up the general government.
09/26/2005 $7,922,079,988,192.98
09/30/2004 $7,379,052,696,330.32
This obviously includes much of the waste in Iraq and the high income tax giveaways, but not much of the hurricane relief, and none of the medicare prescription drug program. With interest rates rising, the debt service will become a more burdensome part of the federal budget.
And what is on the Bush agenda? More tax relief for the rich! A trip to Mars! “Guest workers” to take US jobs at bargain wages (and SS liability)! Another invasion?
