This wasn’t too predictable, considering that Bush “relaunched” the anemic nomination of Harriet Miers three times - who looked increasingly unqualified the more we learned about her.
I still find it telling that the Bush White House considers everything - judicial nominations, Social Security reform, even major mistakes like Abu Ghraib and Katrina - as political campaigns to be spun, media-managed, and scripted as though they were his presidential campaign.

She may have been part of the “don’t throw me in the briar patch” strategy, just to get a real neocon accepted on the next go-around. BTW, as your heating bills go up, remember where the money is going (Cheney’s energy task force members).

Exxon Mobil Posts New Record for Profit, Sales in Third Quarter; Revenue Hits $100.72B
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Exxon Mobil Corp. had a quarter for the record books. The world’s largest publicly traded oil company said Thursday high oil and natural-gas prices helped its third-quarter profit surge almost 75 percent to $9.92 billion, the largest quarterly profit for a U.S. company ever, and it was the first to ring up more than $100 billion in quarterly sales.
Net income ballooned to $9.92 billion, or $1.58 per share, from $5.68 billion, or 88 cents per share, a year ago.

The timing of Miers’ withdrawal is somewhat fishy given the likelihood that a handful of White House officials may find themselves in legal hot water over the next few days. Could it be that Miers was a red herring from the start? Given her obvious lack of credentials, could it be that Miers’ nomination was nothing more than a feint all along, a mere ploy to distract the public from the Fitzgerald investigation? Do I give the administration too much credit? I put nothing past Bush, Cheney, Rove, et al….
