So, we had this nice 4-way in the Lt. Governor race (see left sidebar), with good candidates who are all working hard to win votes. So what does Reilly do? Piss everyone off by deciding to choose a running mate - building a “ticket” even though technically, the Governor and Lt. Governor races are separate affairs. First, rumors and leaked information circulate about Reilly’s talks with rich-guy insider Gabrieli. Then, Gabrieli throws in the towel on the day Reilly is supposed to make an announcement. Now, Reilly apparently went ahead with choosing - someone else, Marie St. Fleur, a Haitian-American state Rep.
Not that I have an issue with having an African-American woman in the race…personally, we see far too few minorities and women in politics here. But if it was a bad idea to pick Gabrieli for the reason that it screws with the democratic process that’s supposed to happen vis a vis the Lt. Governor race, then this is just as much an affront to the efforts of candidates who’ve been in the race as individuals as having a Reilly/Gabrieli ticket. We aren’t supposed to have a “ticket.” We’re supposed to be able to choose candidates for each office on whatever merits we want to judge them by - not because the top of the “ticket” told us to. And now, this makes the Lt. Govornership a 5-way race, which is not only unwieldy, but is not good for the Democratic party as now there will be more money spent on this one race and likely create bad blood such that a united front come November will be harder to pull together.
And personally…I think all the talk in the media about “two white guys” on a “ticket” makes this Reilly move look…rather opportunistic. You know, run with a token black woman so you can look like a diversified sort of guy (after being criticized). And David at Blue Mass Group has taken an initial look at her background…her career took her through former AG Harshbarger’s office, though she’s been in the House since 1999. Okay…two prosecutors running together. Wonder how that will play?

Not to mention the fact (?) that St. Fleur had already thrown her support behind Deb Goldberg in the Lt. Gov race. I wonder how that’s playing in Brookline? (http://www.bluemassgroup.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1339)
Speaking of Goldberg, I’m thinking a photo opp with Joe Lieberman is not a great way to earn “progressive points” in this state: http://www.deborahgoldberg.com/images/photogallery/2_03.jpg

You might consider getting a reaction from Tim Murray (Worcester Mayor running for Lt. Gov.) I met him in a small group setting a few weeks back. I liked what I heard.

Reilly is a DINO and his actions the past week validate his label. Rejecting traditional values, using GOP tactics and pandering to the middle and right side. I hope all democrats remember that. Reilly’s values are not our values and let the independents vote for him in the primary.

Anti-Democratic?? Does picking a running mate subvert the rules somehow? State Rep. St. Fleur will still have to run for Lt. Gov. and win. As “running mate” status in MA gubernatorial elections is informal, it is purely to demonstrate a coordinated vision. It is no more “opportunistic” than somebody running in the first place as a means to get elected - it is simply putting your vision out there.
And it is absolutely racist for anybody to use the word “token” simply because Rep. St. Fleur is black. She is an accomplished legislator, prosecutor, and community activist.
And, Lynne, you cannot say this is an UNdemocratic move and then complain that a five way race is “unwieldy” and “bad for the Party,” as though telling people who want to run that they shouldn’t is so democratic of you…

Duh to huh, are you saying that Rep St Fleur and the AG demonstrate a coordinated vision? Is she a flip flopper on real democratic issues like Reilly, I can see her loyalty is a s shallow as the AG’s. Hows here financial reporting doing these days? BTW saying token isn’t as racist as a white person saying ” is absolutely racist for anybody to use the word “token. Spin it again huh

Reilly keeps shooting himself in the foot. He has the worst strategists working for him. He cannot even run a campaign, how is he going to run a state.

Still waiting for an issues section on Reilly’s website….
Technically I’m the self described token conservative here.
I loved what I read on the Patrick’s site regarding giving the towns more control to create revenue, rather then relying just on property taxes.
All these candidates are probably really nice people, but rather trying to find the right ticket just be yourself and show off your ability to execute ideas.

It’s bad form of Reilly to essentially piss on the 4 established Lt. Gov. candidates, as if his hand-picked — er, make that runner-up — choice is somehow more qualified. It just gives more credence to the argument that the guy (Reilly) is the consummate insider who wouldn’t feel comfortable working with “the people’s choice.” It also shows he has absolutely no people skills, totally alienating the 4 Lt. Gov. candidates and their respective bases of support. That’s just stupid. Politics makes strange bedfellows, and suddenly DP’s bed’s looking pretty crowded.
New tagline for the Reilly campaign: Clueless and classless.
And as for Ms. Le Fleur, she totally shafted Deb Goldberg when it became politically expedient. That says volumes about her character to me. Is that the kind of person we want representing the Commonwealth? Not for me, thank you.
DP’s definitely taking the high road here, and wisely so. I think he’d be complemented nicely by any one of Goldberg, Kelley, Murray and Silbert. More power to them!

Ahem…. Ok; I’ll qualify my displeasure with Ms. St. Fleur. After reading some of the comments over at BMG, it looks like she does have a pretty solid track record, and could be a very strong candidate in her own right.
That being said, I still don’t excuse the Reilly team for its incompetence….

In regards to the comment about me being hypocritical about the Lt Governor’s race vis a vis being undemocratic - all the other candidates have been campaigning (fairly hard too) to prepare for the caucuses. To have someone jump in who will just breeze through because the Reilly delegates to the convention in June will just vote for his declared downticket candidate is anti-democratic, because the Lt. Governor’s race is supposed to be seperate from the top office.
So, say it again…am I wrong?
January 30th, 2006 at 10:09 pm
Oh and RE using the word “token” (go ahead, call me racist again, maybe you even believe it)…Reilly got a real bad reaction from people when it was almost assured that he was going to pick a rich white guy…so suddenly (almost immediately) he picks an African-American woman…so what does that look like to you? It has every appearace of being a backtrack of using her race and gender to offset that criticism. That smacks to me of possible opportunism.
I could be wrong in his motives - I probably am - but it has the appearance. Perception is 9/10s of politics.

Andrea Silbert is still the best match for any candidate for Governor, even one who has snubbed her. She has a proven record of
statewide public service, a great plan to grow the economy and she is a strong progressive record on economic and social issues. She would be the best to tell the real story of the Romney/Healey failures and she has the campaign warchest to win.

I keep reading on various blogs today the Tom Reilly is a party insider who doen’t care what the people think.Let’s set the record straight! Tom Reilly is NOT a party insider.
He will never be accepted by the current MDP leaders and activists as one of them. I say that as an eight-term member of the State Committee. Delegates will be elected on Saturday. Both candidates for Gov will be validated for the Primary ballot. Four or five candidates for Lt. Gov will get the required 15% for a place on the Primary ballot. There are choices for everyone. It will be very democratic. The voters will decide!
ps. Tom Reilly really does care about people. It’s his political sensitivity that needs work.

If I recall correctly, Tom Reilly was booed at a previous Democratic State Convention. No, he is not in fact an insider the same way that Shannon O’Brien actually was an insider, but as Lynne said above, he gives the appearance of being an insider, which is in my opinion even worse. Not only does he not have the institutional advantages of a real machine candidate, but he’s going to get hammered as a connsumate insider by the GOP from now until November and people are likely to believe it.
January 31st, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Technically Deval Patrick could pick St. Fleur as his choice also. Reilly is suppose to be a top lawyer, capable of persuading juries, why isn’t he using that talent here. He is suppose to convince me that the Democrats have the better argument, instead he says “I like independents and republicans too”.
January 31st, 2006 at 2:06 pm
Wow, great conversation (except, of course, for my being accused of being racist…please.)
Thanks for your contribution, iminthemiddle. I guess I don’t question that Reilly is “a good guy” and that he’s interested in public service. But he’s a horrible candidate. He has huge potential to misstep in the general election and we’ll like as not lose the corner office…again.
Even if Reilly were a more inspiring candidate in his ability to stump, he is NOT building any infrastructure to win for the long term. Deval is! I’ve seen first hand the enthusiasm, the community activism, and the stick-to-it-ness of his volunteers. In other words, if he wins the nomination, he will have in place the boots on the ground to…get this…win the governor’s race!
But I still think it’s sticking it in the eye of other hard working candidates to pick a “running mate” just before the cuacuses that you will hand delegates to at the convention. You see, this part of the campaign is where you (as mentioned above) build your support structure to win in the primary and beyond.
I like Silbert a lot, though I like others too. I’m going to make a huge effort to get downticket candidates to Drinking Liberally in the next few months so people can meet them in person. If I do so, would you peeps be interested?

It looks like Reilly has made another bad decision, as his selected running mate has a lot of financial skeletons in her closet. Maybe it just shows that Reilly is not a “politician”, but you can only forgive so many missteps by a potential leader before you conclude he is not suited for the big time.
