Canvass for Deval in Lowell Sunday!

by at 10:00 am.

We’re excited, we’re starting the first in a series of many canvasses for Deval Patrick on Sunday, July 2! We will meet at 2pm in the parking lot of 122 Western Ave (off School St) in Lowell to receive training, our walking lists, and packets, then head off and knock on doors. Don’t worry if you’ve never canvassed before; you will be trained and we’ll work in pairs. It will go until about 5pm where we’ll meet back at 122 Western Ave so I can take in all the wonderful work people have done and get it to campaign HQ.

Nothing, not even a holiday weekend will stop us!

This is also your Open Thread for the day; I’m headed off to Media Giraffe’s confabulation of bloggers out at UMass-Amherst. Wish me good luck in meeting Helen Thomas, who will be in attendance at the conference (no word on whether or not she’s even interested in crashing a local bloggers gaggle or not)!

    Good news for school budget.

    Deal boosts school funding
By REBECCA FATER, Sun Statehouse Bureau

BOSTON — A handful of lawmakers will today unveil a state budget that contains more than $200 million in additional education funds than school districts received this past year.

The fiscal 2007 budget compromise that conference committee members signed late last night contains $3.5 billion total for Chapter 70 across the state. That is $43 million higher than the figure proposed by the House of Representatives, and it tops the Senate’s own original proposal by more than $6 million.

“Both the Senate and House leadership and (budget) conferees knew Chapter 70 was a major, major priority for our cities and towns,” said Sen. Steven Panagiotakos, Senate Ways and Means vice chairman and a member of the budget conference committee.

The compromise grants Lowell a total of $111.66 million in Chapter 70 funds for the coming school year. That’s $3.26 million more than the district received last year, and more than school and city officials expected to receive when the City Council finalized the budget earlier this week.

Turns out that State Rep. Tom Golden and State Rep. David Nangle were right.

In the June 13th edition of the Lowell Sun, Rep. Golden said “They’re [the Lowell School Committee] working with the number they want, not the number that they’ll get.” And Rep. Nangle said, “The (aid) isn’t going to be what they [the Lowell School Committee] expect it to be.”

The School Committee proposed budget was based on $111 Million from the State. Both Reps. Nangle and Golden suggested that the School Committee will get about $2 Million less than that. The State ends up giving us $111.66 M. Did something change in the past two weeks or are these two Reps not good at reading the tea leaves.

Wish I could have gone to the Amherst thing - it being so close and all - but (a) I had some dissertation work to do and (b) still payin’ off a wedding.
