I met Rep. Tom Golden last Tuesday, as we were both marching in the Chelmsford parade. Since then, I’ve been mulling about that and wanted to find time to write about the experience, but time has been scarce, and I wanted to do the subject justice.
Because my impression is that Rep. Golden finds what I write something of a joke, to be dismissed.
Now, I know I (mostly) disagree with him on the issues. I also am well aware how little the seat has been in dispute. As far as I can Google, there’s never been a mention in the Sun about a primary challenger, though it still appears he has a Republican challenger this November. So maybe he can afford to take this blog or any of my opinions - or that of readers - as a joke.
Of course, he also admitted he didn’t read the blog much. He mostly gets his information second hand from friends as to what’s written (how much trouble has been made in this town by that grapevine mentality, I wonder?). I invited him to come and post comments, to dispute anything he thinks is unfair, but he seemed uninterested.
To be fair, his dismisive response was primarily to a post he did actually read with his own eyeballs, on the issue of a one line bill allowing landlords to charge for utilities. He laughed about it, stating that the law had been around for several years and that quoting the Phoenix is not credible. He told me, “all it would have taken is one phone call” to him to clear it up. He was all self-assured and matter-of-fact - and smiling about it.
But I didn’t have all the facts the article lists on hand to get specific responses from Rep. Golden. Going back and reading that article now, though, I think it was Golden who is confused and needs to clear things up. The article does cite the bill from two years ago:
In theory, properly allocated utility costs could prompt frugality and save resources. With that in mind, the state passed a lengthy, complex law two years ago allowing landlords to bill tenants for water usage.
Unlike that law, however, the proposed energy bill does not provide assurances to tenants or protect against eviction if one fails to pay the new fee. As a result, groups like MassPIRG and Massachusetts Law Reform Institute have opposed it. “It is ill-motivated, poorly conceived, and poorly written,” says Charlie Harak, of the National Consumer Law Center in Boston.
The seperate, new bill is specifically about the computerized system that would be used to divide the bill among tenents. Not the previous bill that allowed landlords to charge for water usage.
Of course, since Golden seems to think this blog isn’t worth responding to (he didn’t respond to the calls from the Phoenix either, according to the article), I wonder if I’ll ever get a real answer from him. It should be Golden reaching out to his constituants, not the other way around. Considering Rep. Golden’s scorecard on how he votes compared to the MA Democratic platform (though he improved this year), he’s the one who should be providing us with explanations.
I get the impression that Rep. Golden feels entitled not to respond, neither to the Phoenix nor to me. It leaves me wondering if it’s been too long since he had a credible Democratic challenger in the primary.

Don’t know Rep Golden, but from what I read it appears that you have made the right conclusion about his being “above the general constituency”. He can afford that now, as voter apathy allows those with special interests to get their way. That won’t be easy to change, unless a real contender steps forward.
As for the bill, it seems patently unjust to charge residents for electricity usage, not based on a measurement, but rather as allocated by some computer program. Let the landlords pay the bill for separate powere accounts if they want to charge the tenants for electricity.
And for another issue with respect to Rep. Golden, his involvement in the Burbeck property has never been satisfactorily explained.

what makes you so special that the rep should respond to you.
How many of his constituents actually read your blog? You have made
it clear that Golden is not your cup of tea. Why should he bother
with you? He gets nothing from it.
How many hitsd do u get a day from Lowellites?
July 9th, 2006 at 12:46 pm
Ernie…why should an elected official respond to a member of the public? Did you really ask that question
in all seriousness or did you forget to put the happy face on it?
BTW, the term is Lowellians, not Lowellites.

i’m serious. Lynne wants special treatment because she has blog.
She talked to him in peson and got answers. Because she has a blog she is more important?
I don’t think so, and neither does golden.
July 9th, 2006 at 1:49 pm
From what I got, from what Lynne wrote..it would appear she didn’t obtain the answers to her questions and her article is a
direct response to that.
The fact is, this blog receives over 1,000 hits day. Particularly from those who live in this area.
We all offer our own opinions.
Furthermore, our elected officials should be responding to members of the public as they are the ones who put them in office.

I would imagine that 2 jobs,2 small children and a wife keep Rep. Golden pretty busy. Maybe he just doesn’t have the time for it.
July 9th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
you do not get 1000 hits day. sorry, not true.
what would golden ever say to make the readrs here vote for him?
Go Golden

Well, then, Kennedy, maybe he’s not cut out to represent the people? I mean, like Bush says, it’s hard work, right? It’s not for everyone.
I’m pretty insulted at Ernie’s insinuation (BTW, Ernie is a famous naysayer at Blue Mass Group, just so you know) that I want special treatment. As far as I can tell, Rep. Golden does not have comprehensive answers to my questions posed in the original article, and was very condescending about the whole idea that someone was asking those questions.
I happen to have a blog, yes, but not because I want special treatment. Is it too much to ask for some accountability and respect for constituents from our Representatives? I’m sorry I do not worship at the alter of Nangle, Golden, and all the rest like some do. I’m saddened at the lack of interest they seem to sometimes show for the opinions of the people they represent.
I don’t freakin’ blog for my health - nor for access to all the hip political parties (like I ever am invited anyway). I don’t blog because I have to assuage my ego and importance (good lord, anyone who’s met me knows I can’t stand being the center of attention). I blog because goddamnit, it’s a free country, we have a right to speak our minds - and a directive to engage in our democracy. Didn’t we just go through a Fourth of July?
If you can’t answer the arguments on the merits, then don’t bother responding at all. It’s so much easier for some people to employ personal attacks then actually engage on the issue being discussed. And that’s getting really old.
July 9th, 2006 at 2:37 pm
Good god Lynne…..Get over yourself! It’s a BLOG we’re talking about here. At least he had the courtesy to speak with you for as long as he did….
July 9th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
Yes, I should be tripping over myself with gratitude. [/sarcasm]
Go ahead, accuse me of having an ego again, even though you’ve never met me and don’t know me.
No, really, please!
Can’t anyone ever come at me on the issues? It would be nice to have a discussion with someone who disagrees on the issues.
I’m guessing this thread is going to be one of those items reported once again on that famous grapevine.

Isn’t Rep. Tom Golden a “public servant?” Rep. Golden as are his colleagues are benefiting from the power of the incumbency and the lack of challengers; a side effect of the GOB Network. After a while, they begin to believe that no one has the right to question them or oppose their position on issues. By the way, he has developed a thin skin lately, surprising for a guy from Lowell. Aren’t we supposed to be tough?
By the way, when Rep. Golden says “all it would have taken was one phone call,” a statement I also heard him say on WCPA on another issue, I am sure before taking to the street last April to join the supporters of the outgoing City Manager (see Lowell Sun, April 23rd), he telephoned Mayor Bill Martin and the five other City Council who wanted a changed in our City administration. I am sure he gave our properly elected City officials that courtesy.

The way I see it…this legislation directly effects many residents throughout the Commonwealth who rent their homes.
So, I suppose that those who rent their homes (and also vote) have a vested interest in this particular piece of legislation,
because it directly impacts their checkbook.

Rep. Golden doesn’t owe this blog any courtesy. It’s a BLOG, not a media outlet……He spoke w/ Lynne…. end of story. Obviously she didn’t get the answer she wanted. oh well. He also probabally doesn’t have the time to get into a “blog debate”. Can you blame him? I have certainly wasted too much time of this beautiful day….Why don’t you all run for office and become “public servants?”
July 9th, 2006 at 6:00 pm
Hey Kennedy, how connected to the GOB are you? Just asking. You seem to take these things so personally.
Blogs are both a media outlet and not (well, at least political blogs). It’s both about analysis of the news, opinion of the writer, and yes even news sometimes. It’s mostly a running editorial. The Sun has editorials. Does that make the Sun not a media outlet? Better tell Jim…he’s writing a blog for the Sun now. He’ll want to know you think he should quit.
And hey, Kennedy, I’m canvassing and phone banking for a candidate weekly - are you?
Oh, and if you feel this blog isn’t worth answering, why are you here, answering? I’m kinda in a state of disbelief as to why you need to have the last word on a such an “inconsequential blog.”
July 9th, 2006 at 7:07 pm
Oh my…..You certainly have a way of putting words in people’s mouths…..particularly mine. Oh well, I’ll let you have the last word this time, as I know how you love that! I’m sure it will be filled w/ sarcasm and swears, you seem to love that too!
P.S. I’m not a fan of the Sun but it certainly is more credible than LOL.

I’ve been reading this blog for qwhile now and with the exception of a few (read very few) folks off the deep end I’ve enjoyed it. I prefer to sit and read and not participate but this one’s got me going. I met Rep Golden the first time he ran when he knocked on my door canvassing my neighborhood. He seemed awfully young but personable and informed. I like new blood so he got my vote. Since then I have called his office 3 times, he answered twice himself, I needed information on two bills that had passed recently that affected my job. Within a week I received what I needed by mail. The third time I was very concerned about a peice of legislation going thru the house. Rep. Golden said he was leaning against my view but was willing to hear me out. He listened for 40 minutes I gave him several views he wasn’t familliar with. He said he would look into it. Seven weeks he voted my way. The fact he and Sen. P….(sorry) keep geeting my votes is that they don’t always vote the party line. Sometimes even Democrats are wrong (not often) I want my Reps to have the guts to vote as they and their costituents want them to. sorry about the length but thanks for letting me vent.

Got news for ya’Ernie…considering I have access to that data..it is true that LiL does get over a 1,000 hits a day.

ArtisFun: I’m glad you had a good experience with your Rep, and that he’s responded to you. I’m certainly happy he changed his mind on gay marriage. All positive things. My question is how come he didn’t have a better answer on a very simple matter? And if he wanted to engage you, then why not me, or my readers?
I certainly do not begrudge any individual legislator his independence in his vote, and I don’t think the party is a monolith. However, the fact remains that his scorecard is a little light on being a Democrat. I’m all for the big tent, but as someone pretty dedicated to the Democratic platform as aligned with my values, I reserve the right to make mention of that.
July 9th, 2006 at 11:56 pm
All right, I will attempt this one more time, even if it’s like beating my head on a wall. I feel like Kennedy has once again dodged my questions with the uncanny ability to attack out of nowhere. So, I will ask the questions one at a time, in essay format, numbered, just to make it easier. If you can’t actually answer me directly on the specific question, I’m done engaging you on this thread, because I’m beginning to suspect you’re just trying to provoke the argument so you can go off and play the victim to your friends, claiming to having been attacked by the big bad mean old blogger. (Sarcastic enough for you?)
1. Where, exactly and with detail, did I put any words in your mouth?
2. Why, exactly and with details, are you posting here on this blog?…giving it credibility with your presence…because, if as you say, it’s insignificant and just a blog…why do you care? Explain how this cognitive dissonance works for you.
3. Why do you take a discussion about these people so personally in every thread? What conflicts of interest do you have?
10 points off for ad hominem attacks. Bonus points for not going off on a tangent, and double bonus points for actually addressing the original point of this post (thank you ArtisFun for actually doing that).
July 10th, 2006 at 6:58 pm
well, I guess I’m glad someone’s had luck with him. I had an issue that I wanted to talk with him about earlier this year, and after 3 calls to his office, nothing. if there’s ever been a need for term limits, I think we’re getting close to it for Mr. Golden.
