Galvin A No-Show In Worcester

by at 10:38 am.

So says the Bonifaz blog

Bill Galvin didn’t show up last night in Worcester either, leaving John Bonifaz and Jill Stein to answer questions from the panel without him. The best we’ve been able to get from the Galvin campaign about why he skipped Medford on Wednesday, is that he wasn’t planning to be there in the first place - even though his sudden cancellation sure surprised the Medford Democrats who organized the forum.

Wow, I think Galvin just lost my vote. Seriously. You cannot be SecState in charge of elections and be a no-show for your own. I will have to seriously consider the implications of this, as I wasn’t planning on endorsing anyone for SecState before. I’m rather disgusted.

Update: Oh, I just love how full of holes this comment at BMG is

Hi there, my name is Kara and for full disclosure, I work for Secretary Bill Galvin’s campaign.

Let me set this “story” straight.

Secretary Galvin NEVER agreed to appear in Medford, nor Worcester as falsely reported by his opponent’s website and furthered discussed in this blog.

Let me also note, Secretary Galvin has shared the podium with his opponent ten times since the beginning of this year. Most recently, both Galvin and Bonifaz appeared in Falmouth for an event just last Sunday.

Once again, the Bonifaz campaign is full of mis-statements regarding not only Secretary Galvin’s record, but now his scheduled appearances. This clearly demonstrates further evidence of dishonesty from the Bonifaz campaign.

I hope this clarifies any misunderstandings.

You mean, like the misunderstanding of the Medford Dems thinking he was gonna show? (BMG says they are working on this story, I can’t wait to read about it.) Or should we be thanking Galvin for gracing a microphone 10 times with his opponant, except none of them being any sort of substantial debate on the issues? He needs to commit to a real debate, and with only three weeks until Primary Day, lots of opportunities have been passed up already.

eury13 asks, in the same thread, why then did State House News Service reported that he was expected in Medford? “I’m assuming that SHNS and the Medford Democratic committees don’t get their info exclusively from BMG and the Bonifaz web site,” he says. Agreed. They probably got it from the Medford Dems, at least that’s my best guess. And then why did the SHNS then report that Galvin was “stuck in New Bedford”? If he knew ahead of time about that event and wasn’t planning on attending Medford, he should have alerted the Medford Dems ahead of time (probably, say, when they first invited him to attend). Not make excuses when he’s already a no-show. This reflects very badly on Galvin, even if everything he says is true - that he never expected to attend.

So, we await BMG’s report on that and again we ask: will you, Galvin, commit to a real debate on the issues with your opponants (Bonifaz and Green Party candidate Jill Stein)?

Between this series of events and his recent talking down of voter turn out (shouldn’t he be out there cheering on everyone to get them to the polls) I decided to vote for Bonifaz a few days ago. I voted for Galvin at the convention, but just can not support him right now.

I gotta say, I was planning on voting for Galvin, because I thought Bonifaz didn’t get the total package of Sec of State (it’s more than just elections). Now, though, I wonder. If the official in charge of elections shows this much contempt for the democratic process…

More info is posted! And the thot plickens….

If the Bonifaz campaign isn’t getting any traction and his “issues” haven’t apparently struck a chord with the voters, it isn’t Galvin’s job and he would be foolish to lend credibility to the Bonifaz campaign by showing up to “defend” himself. This is Political Science 101 stuff. Ditto on the Lynch threads.

And David’s posting is an email to and from unnamed third parties. It is clear that the emails are not to/from the Galvin campaign when it is asked “Has Galvin’s office confirmed?” The plot is no thicker.

  5. David Says:

Lowellian, I never claimed that the emails are to/from the Galvin campaign - obviously, they are not. My point is that the Medford organizers - and I will represent that the emails are to and from one of the people involved in setting up the event - believed that Galvin was coming. That was confirmed in Sunday’s Globe article.

And come on - Galvin shouldn’t “defend himself”?? Of course he should. He should be accountable to the voters for whom he works. Like him or not, Bonifaz is a legit challenger who has collected both the necessary signatures and the necessary votes at the convention; in addition, of course, he has an impressive career as a voting rights advocate. Galvin should debate him.

And to the extent that PoliSci 101 says “ignore your opponent,” I don’t buy it. Just because it may work doesn’t make it right. No candidate should hunker down and try to fly below radar to stay in office.
