Great Way to Wake Up at 7AM on a Sunday

by at 7:24 am.

My alarm clock is set to WBUR and I was having trouble waking up early for a meeting this morning until…

They reported that the Boston Globe has endorsed Deval!

David, who was up way too freaking late last night or rather, was up way to late blogging (dude, do you have a life?? heh), beat me to the announcement.

In choosing a governor to run the state, voters look for executive experience, wise issue positions, and the intangible quality of leadership. It is a rare thing when a candidate has all three.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Often, the character of a political campaign provides a lens into how a candidate would govern. One may call on longtime political alliances. One may spend a lot of money on television ads. Patrick has chosen to build a broad citizen organization, fueled by his inspiring presence, perhaps, but also benefiting from the advice and participation of thousands who are joining the political process in earnest for the first time. The organization may help propel him to victory in the election. More important, because of the base it provides to speak directly to the voters and mobilize support for change, it can help him govern.

Like David, I thought that last line was amazingly apt. (Interesting they took pot shots at the other two there…)

Despite the easy stereotype, he is no big-spending, antibusiness liberal. His ideas for economic development are as serious and sensible as any candidate’s, Republican or Democrat.

Oh thank god, someone in the media finally got this one right.

Judging from the “brain trust” of policy advisers he already has attracted to the campaign, we are confident he will build an administration full of the talent and energy that have been shut out of government – both in the executive and the Legislature — for too long.

Changing politics! No more hacks in important positions like overseeing the Big Dig. No more playing politics with our welfare.

Welcome to the party, Boston Globe! I am confident that Deval will live up to your assessment, and then some.

Thank you, Globe! You have put into print the thoughts that we
have had for a very long time concerning our Candidate,
Deval Patrick. This is just the sort of encouragement that we,
who have been feeding the geass roots campaign for a very long
time, appreciate in the last drive to the polls. The countdown
    begins!
Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two,
    DEVAL PATRICK WINS BIG!!!
    Good luck everyone.

  2. K-R-S Says:

Nice to see the Globe is up to speed with what we have known all along!

  3. Ari Says:

    Right on!

  4. waittilnextyr Says:

The Globe has stated the case very well. Hopefully, it will convince the voters to do the right thing next week.

However, don’t expect the Lowell Sun to follow suit. Winning Lowell, despite that, will be a great accomplishment.

  5. Wes F. in North Adams Says:

As I understand the Lowell Sun, they’re bloody likely to endorse HEALEY in the Democratic Primary (as well as the general, of course).

    WF

  6. Paul@01852 Says:

Healey?!! She’s a according to the Sun’s standards!!!

  7. Lynne Says:

Wes: the endorsement of Bush in 2004 has as much to do with not endorsing Kerry than anything about Bush. They have a major grudge from way back.

But it’s just as likely they’ll endorse Healey as Reilly and far less likely they’ll endorse Patrick.

Though, we DO have Paul Sullivan on our side I think. Just sayin’.

  8. I81U812 Says:

I hate to be the one who bursts the bubble, but no Democrat is going to be able to beat Healy in the general election. The 800lb elephant in the living room is…………gay marriage. These Republicans are both crafty and dirty at the same time. They haven’t tossed those two words out YET. But, beleive me, these people gave us both Bushes and they know how to play the game. Nobody is going to be able to convince Joe Sixpack or Grandma Eleanor that same sex marriage is good for them. Regardless of how we feel about the issue, it’s cement shoes for the Dems.

  9. Lynne Says:

gay marriage is a non-starter. Even some Repubs are not interested in fighting it any more.

I have noticed an interesting lack of momentum from the anti-gay-marriage init people. I don’t doubt they’ll push as hard as they can, with the help of mostly outside-of-state money, but it’s lost its air.

We don’t have that many Joe Sixpacks here, and most of the grandma’s I’ve talked to this is not their focus. Plus Healey isn’t anti-gay-marriage, or at least, is for civil unions as I recall. Not much difference between the two for a adament opposer of gay rights really.

No, to the extent we have Joe Sixpacks, they’re anti tax - thinking they get taxed more than anyone else. Healey will try to wack any Dem over the head (except Reilly, who has a snowball’s chance in hell now) with the tax thing, and the legislature thing. In turn, Patrick will very coherantly and cogently wack back. He’s good at explaining his position about the tax rollback in soundbite amounts without dumbing it down or sounding naive. That’s why he’s our best shot against the Republicans.

On the other issue, “running against the legislature,” Healey will also find Patrick a damned tough opponant.

These two things is all she has.

  10. I81U812 Says:

Oh yeah, and don’t forget her husbands 40 million dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand the lady. I believe I’m gonna sit this one out, unless someone gives me a good reason to get off my butt and vote. As far as newspaper endorsements, they are Sooooooo yesterday. Paul Sullivan is on the side of anyone who will give his wife a raise. Maybe its good that your man won’t get the Sun’s endorsement. It’s usually the kiss of death anyways.

  11. I81U812 Says:

And, don’t let me forget, Gay Marriage is just as relevant as Dukakis in a tank. Not very, but it’ll win.

  12. waittilnextyr Says:

The reason gay marriage has taken a back seat, is that it is now obvious to all, except the blind idealogues, that putting personal issues before wise politics brings us the ilk of George Bush.

  13. I81U812 Says:

In my opinion, the reason it is in the back seat is that they don’t need it yet. Why waste good bullets when the Three Amigos are beating the crap out of each other? Next thing you know, Reilly will accuse Gabrielli of killing Jon-Benet.

  14. Lynne Says:

I could honestly care less about the Sun’s endorsement (except to be shocked as hell if they endorse a Dem, nevermind Patrick) because eveyrone expects them to be an outlier these days, what with their completely stupid endorsement of Bush in ‘04. I hope they come to a better conclusions than usual, but I ain’t holding my breath.

Healey’s money…feh. It can’t be discounted, but money is not everything. Look at Gabs…spent more money than ANY guv primary in the history of MA and it got him lots of points…but probably not enough to overcome a lack of turnout of the so-so voter in a primary. Whereas there is NO way that Deval doesn’t kick Healey’s sorry butt on the ground - no WAY the Repubs beat 7,200+ volunteers (probably going on towards 10,000 volunteers for the general, as Deval’s team is melding into the state party and picks up LG and other gov volunteers as well).

You can’t beat having true volunteers who care talking to votersone on one when it comes to running. Yes, the general is slightly different in strategy than the primary, but the ground game for Patrick is insane. Even in Lowell! The bastion of laziness when it comes to politics! I swear to god.

Gay marriage doesn’t work here because we’re not Indiana or even Maryland. We are, to some extent, a little insolated from the extremist right here, except in as much as they send their non-local money to groups fighting gay marriage. Just look at how many (conservative!) legislators flipped on gay marriage since we started talking about it, including Rep. Tom Golden! T’ain’t worried, you haven’t convinced me at all.

I think you are being hard on Sullivan in this case. I’ve talked to him on a couple of occasions. He speaks about Patrick with great respect and I do believe it’s genuine.

  15. Fran McDougall Says:

    FLASH
Reilly’s camp just sent out an announcement of a major
endorsement!! CAPE COD TIMES endorses Reilly!
    Let’s see:
cape cod times vs. BOSTON GLOBE
They must be running neck and neck.
Paul Sullivan by the way supports Deval.

  16. I81U812 Says:

Ok, ya convinced me. I’ll vote for Deval now.

  17. Lynne Says:

I81U812, seriously? Or is that sarcasm? (No really, I’m honestly asking.)

    If the former, yay! ;)

  18. I81U812 Says:

    dripping

  19. Ryan Says:

Who cares about Gay Marriage? It’s over and done with, not on the minds of voters. Heck, I’m gay and it isn’t even on MY mind.

BTW, I don’t think stereotypes are going to work very well in massachusetts on gay marriage. Let us not forget that it was the Republican contingent of the State Supreme Court that wrote Goodridge, not the liberals. Furthermore, I’m the son of a former professional football player and the brother of a 6′6″ guy who would have went the same route if not for medical situations that ended his career… so, so much for Joe Sixpacks caring! My brother’s a deeply conservative guy too, btw, and loves Bush, Lieberman, the Iraq war and lots of other crazy positions - but he could care less about gay marriage.

  20. Lynne Says:

I81U812: Sorry you feel so cynically. You can stay home on election day if you want; the rest of us will get on with the work of government, whether that’s holding it accountable, electing good leaders, or fighting for our issues.

  21. Tim Little Says:

BTW, Glob picks Murray from the LG field.

  22. Eleanor Rigby Says:

Actually I think I81U812 might be right, Healey will not use the gay marriage issue until after the
primary, why should she? So if it’s going to come up look for the weeks leading up to the election and
there are lots of folks in this state who love to impose their morality on the masses. However I do think
any of the Dems can still beat her in the general. And for the record I an certainly NOT the Grandma Eleanor
    that I81 speaks of! :-)
