Gabrieli Caught Pandering

by at 2:18 pm.

What else do you call it when a candidate uses robocalls and other media to attack an opponent on an issue on which he’s not really strongly against?

David lays it out for us: despite Gabrieli’s supposed stance against the immigrant tuition bill which failed this past year, and his use of that issue to attack Patrick and Reilly, who are for it, he apparently isn’t really against it. David quotes the Globe:

Just a month ago, on Aug. 15, Chris Gabrieli told Globe editors he did not feel strongly about the issue of giving favorable in-state tuitions to illegal immigrants seeking to attend UMass and other public colleges. While he wouldn’t propose it, Gabrieli said, “I never say I’m actually against it.” If the Legislature approved it, he added, “I have not said I’d veto it.”

Okay…but that doesn’t sound like the Gabrieli campaign when they sent out this robocall. But I love this part:

His rationale: “I wish those kids would get the education, and I do feel they’re caught in between.” But there is a political problem for Democrats, he added. “Putting that out on our forehead is some kind of suicide impulse” suggesting that “our priority is to fund a group of kids whose parents are here illegally.”

So, Chris, you’d rather pander to the public, ignoring how you really feel, than stand up for your principles, in order to win? Sounds an awful lot like Kerry, to me. And he lost what should have been a cakewalk election. (Sure, there was fraud, but the election had to be really close for the fraud to work.)

I’ve said before that Gabrieli should be ashamed for cynically using a hot-button issue in order to win votes, especially since he bills himself the “education” candidate. Now I think he should be doubly ashamed for pandering to the voters on an issue while not telling the truth about his own stance on it.

Some part of me, by the way, wonders if this fake “stand” Gabrieli took against the immigrant tuition bill was one of the factors in his favor with the Sun editorial board. Just, you know, wonderin’.

A political candidate pandering?!!!! WOW! This is a first. Sorry, it’s a second. Andrea Silbert waffled on Cape Wind until a definitive poll came out in July…then she stuck her index finger to the political winds and said, “I’m for it!” prior to that in every LG forum she danced with the best of them!

  2. Victoria Says:

Deval is also the ONLY candidate who has said that he absoultely would not use state troopers to round up undocumented workers. It would be amazing to have someone in office who actually has compassion for all people and who really understands the complex issues around immigration.

  4. Real Deal Says:

Not only can Deval Patrick win but IMHO he is the ONLY Democrat who can beat Healey. Why?

Democrats never seem to learn that you don’t beat Republicans by being Republican Lite. Healey already has the diehards on the tax cut issue sewn up. The Reilly/Gabrieli metooism only seems cloying and opportunistic. Voters see through that in a minute. It will be a breath of fresh air to have a Democrat from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party in the race.

Given a choice between Republican and Republican Lite, who would you choose? Given a choice between a Republican frantically trying to distance herself from her predecessor’s record and a True Blue Democrat Patrick wins, if for no other reason than that he is the real thing.

  5. The Real Democrat Says:

Deval is no Democrat. He is nothing more than a Socialist Carpetbagger from outside Mass. hoping to hoodwink the ultra-liberal, socialist branch of the Democratic Party. The more the party nominates these socialists, the more elections for the corner office will be won by Republicans. It is time to smarten up folks. Gabrieli can carry the Independent voters. This is where elections are won and lost. And NO, this is not Republican Lite, this is the AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS!!!

  6. Lynne Says:

Uhhh…OK “The Real Democrat.” Sanity isn’t your forte I see.

So, according to some people, Deval is: A) a conservative corporate shill or B) too liberal to win. Come on, make up my mind here. And how are you a carpet bagger when you came to high school here and stayed? Huh? And riddle me this…since when have we actually elected real “liberal” Democrats and WON the corner office? Seems to me we keep going with the “safe” choice and wind up with Republicans.

Dude, you do your candidate no good with your comment…people here are a little more intelligent than that. And I hope that if you lose tomorrow, you’ll be still helping the Democrats win in November. Me, I’ll be at the upcoming LDCC meeting no matter what, slings and arrows aside (I know I’ll probably be attacked just for showing up).

  7. The Real Democrat Says:

It looks as though you can savor a victory. Alas, there is no doubt that it will be short lived. The socialist, utopian seeking, new world order elements of the Democratic party will never cease to amaze me. Those who subscribe to the Ralph Nader political ideology have decimated the hope of the working class.

When you can no longer appeal to the modertae independent voters, you cannot win a general election. Harshbarger and O’Brien were not “safe” choices. They were pathetic choices. Each were candidates out of step with the main stream. Might I also remind you that Gabrieli was the party choice only four years ago.

It is not my vote that you need to worry about. I am a life long Democrat. I am merely pointing out that this is no longer the party of Jack Kennedy.

You cannot continue to line up candidates that are out of sync with the public on taxes (”The property tax is the tax to cut”- my ass!, since when does a governor set property taxes), illegal immigration, and gay marraige (which incidnetly submarined any chance John Kerry had at the presidency, or perhaps he was another “safe” choice).

Sometimes reality hurts. Savor the victory. It will not last long.

  8. Mr. Lynne Says:

Please explain how Patrick is like Nader?
Please explain how Patrick is a socialist?
Please explain where Patrick has stated that he is “pro NWO”?

Seriously… where do you get this stuff? You obviously haven’t been paying attention.

Although I hardly think the ticket will ignore the center, it should be noted that the GOP has made a national strategy of ignoring the center.
