“A modern day lynching?”

by at 6:44 pm.

This Blue Mass Group post by Tom poses the question, is Kerry Healey playing on racism with all her recent leaks/attacks?

For centuries linking a Black man to the word rape has been a tool used to inflame fear in White people, and I believe the Healey campaign knows that. Whether it’s his legal work, or their sleazy opposition research (reported in the Herald today) that dug up a crime committed against Patrick’s sister, the Healey campaign has one goal and one goal only; keep the name Patrick linked to the word “rape” through election day.

It seems far-fetched when you first hear it, but seriously. Think about it. Patrick prosecuted and defended hundreds of cases in his civil-rights-heavy experience; why are we hearing largely about rape cases over and over? Tom goes on to say,

I am a White male and I recently attended a birthday party for a family member in our Metrowest suburban town. As it usually does, the conversation among the adults at the party turned to current events including the governor’s race. It was very striking to me that the three other White men at the party all used the same language to describe why they were leaning against voting for Patrick. They all said they were “afraid” of him. “Afraid” — a word choice that I thought was very odd. I can think of reasons why people might not want to vote for Patrick; too liberal is the one that you here the most, but to not vote for him because your “afraid”? That’s just strange — unless you look at Healey’s strategy.

Many lynchings in the South revolved around Black men bogusly charged with raping White women. Facts in those cases were usually irrelevant — once the charge was made the man was guilty as charged.

Today, from the Healey campaign we are presented with a picture of Deval Patrick, the Black man running for governor who wants to “free all the rapists” (that’s an actual quote from a local talk radio genius). Kerry Healey and her cohorts deserve to lose big on election day not because of her stance on the issues, and her lack of a substantive record.

I am loath to talk about the race card - Patrick’s whole campaign is about opportunity, hope, change, and possibilities…not race. However, Healey’s sleazy repeated mantras with any rape cases Patrick was affiliated with surely cannot be coincidence.

Even if this isn’t true, and it is all coincidence, not cynical fear-mongering - these attacks are misleading, disgusting, and pathetic. They reflect a Healey campaign in a tailspin, desperate, without a real plan for moving Massachusetts in a new direction.

Come show your support for Patrick/Murray at the rally this Sunday, 2:30pm on the Common.

You know, Lynne… I think you have something here. I want to go vomit now…

Once again, the Republicans using the Bogeyman to scare the White folks into locking their women up…PuLEASE!!!!!…How horrible and SO 50’s…How passe’..Get a grip.

I would hope that race would not be a factor, though I’m sure it is with some voters. If Healey is exploiting that, shame on her and she doesn’t deserve to be Governor. However, your post brings something else about Patrick to mind that concerns many undecided voters. You said “Patrick’s whole campaign is about opportunity, hope, change, and possibilities.”
What about issues? Is his campaign about any issues? If he wins, and I think he will, he will have to actually govern, and I think there are a lot of people, myself included, who are concerned that we don’t really know what type of Governor he will be. The four words you mentioned that describe his campaign are all good things, but Patrick has not made it clear (at least not to me) how any of this translates into actual policy/legislation.

Go read his website, watch the debates, and you’ll see more specifics on the issues than I remmember any candidate publishing for a long time.

It’s CW (common wisdom) that you don’t go specific because your opponant can tear it apart…Deval went specific early and often. He has great position papers.

  5. waittilnextyr Says:

Lynne, you are correct that Deval Patrick has defined positions in great detail on his website, but, at least to date, the message has been muted in the debates, probably because more sensational topics are thrown in the mix.

Aaron is searching for some beef in the campaign, and you have directed him to the right market. But what about the many other “Aarons” out there, who will never get to see the website? Many of those, particularly the elderly who vote, will not have access to the internet. However, they do read papers, listen to the radio and watch TV. And if you look at the Lowell Sun as a source, you will see front page pictures of Healey in some ceremonial event 5 times for each mention of Patrick in a positive story.

I expect the best way to overcome that deficiency, is to steer the public debates to issues of substance, and make the print media follow up with reports. It is obvious Healey is doing whatever she can to avoid that type of discussion, and she is being quite successful so far.

The best hope may be the people’s ability to see through her strategy, but it would help if the next debate could be focussed on substance and not fear.

  6. Lynne Says:

Anecdotally, I think this crap-peddling of Healey’s is backfiring in a big way. Her whole strategy has really turned a lot of people off. At least, that’s what I’ve been seeing. Now, I’ve been IDing about 5-7 Patrick supporters to every definite Not Patrick; though we’re talkig to Unenrolled and Dem voters, there’s not that many registered Republicans to begin with. I saw this before the primary too. Just saying’!

The next debate, I’m SURE this will come up. And yes, the debates have been lame places to get the plans and positions of the candidates, particularly Patrick’s, because their formats and the priorities of the questioners leaves a LOT to be desired. Healey’s got the easy Republican mantras - lower taxes! brown people evil! balance those terrible Democrats in the legislature!

Trouble is, everyone watched as Mitt became pretty much irrelevant after alienating the legislature instead of trying to work with it, and his vetoes were always overriden. Not to mention, people are looking back and agreeing with most of those overrides to begin with. People are tired of being sold the same bill of goods and getting fewer jobs, tighter economies, worse schools, lagging public universities, etc. That bogeyman isn’t scaring people as it once was. They also remember that when we had higher taxes, we had a better economy…nationally AND locally.

  7. Aaron Says:

To suggest that Healey feels that “Brown people” are evil is just as ignorant and baseless as it is to suggest that Patrick has an affinity for rapists and cop-killers.
