Ed Davis Headed to Boston

by at 11:16 pm.

An astute reader caught Channel 7 quoting tomorrow’s Herald that Mayor Menino will be appointing Ed Davis as the new Boston Police Commissioner.

Obviously we wish him well in his new job; so where does this leave Lowell? Is the appointment of a new police chief left to the City Manager? (Honestly asking, I never thought to figure this out since I didn’t know this was coming.)

If so, frankly, I’m glad it happened on Lynch’s watch.

[Update: the Herald article in question.]

  1. Eleanor Rigby Says:

Yes the appointment of the Superintendent of Police is one made by the CM. I don’t recall if it needs council approval, I don’t think so.

Ed Davis is a good cop, I wish him well!

  2. K-R-S Says:

Great move for Davis professionally! Sad that we’re losing him.
Lynch has been on target with all of his hires so far. I’m sure this pick will be no differant. (I hope)

  3. waittilnextyr Says:

Let’s hope the replacement is in the same mold as Chief Davis and continues the policy of total community involvement in preventing crime, as well as providing assistance in solving the crimes that do occur.

  4. Fran McDougall Says:

I’m sure that Bernie will be right on this and solicit suggestions from the people who are in the position to give him advice. Police departments are often manned by good officers who, in their attempts to rise in the ranks, find themselves having to play the political game of one-upmanship with their fellow officers. I don’t know who these players are on the Lowell force and I don’t know whether Bernie will conduct a nationwide search but, whatever happens, it’s sure to be interesting. Let the scrambling begin!

  5. Tim Little Says:

Congrats to Ed Davis — community policing is an essential part of any serious public safety policy, and I wish him well in Boston.

I’ll second (third? fourth? fifth?) the expectation that CM Lynch will find a suitable replacement.

  6. Fred. Quinn Says:

What if he looks to promote from within? Who are we looking at Cormier?

  7. bob lighthouse Says:

I think Taylor will be the selection for the City.

  8. K-R-S Says:

Isn’t Cormier out on injury? (for past several months)

  9. Notokay Says:

really sorry to lose Ed Davis, he has been the best chief in my lifetime. Please don’t suggest Dennis Cormier. He is a close ally of John Cox, and is cut from the same cloth.

  10. pete the pirate Says:

“he has been the best chief in my lifetime”?????
how can you people even suggest who should succeed him?
and you celebrate that a guy from out of town, who knows little about the city i was born in, is the best guy to select a successor! what does lynch know about law enforcement? what does mumbles know about le?
let someone well versed in law enforcememnt help out. how about we have a guy who will hand out ma licenses to illegal immigrants make the choice?

Maybe this issue is not so balck and white as you think, or that Kerry Healey would have you think.

FLORIDA Jeb Bush backs illegal-immigrant driver licenses, By Brendan Farrington
    ASSOCIATED PRESS April 7, 2004
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Jeb Bush endorsed a bill to allow illegal immigrants to get driver licenses, saying they are in the state anyway and officials should accept that fact.
The bill he is backing has enough safeguards to make sure terrorists are not getting licenses, Bush said Monday.”We shouldn’t allow them to come into the country to begin with, but once they’re here, what do you do? Do you basically say that they’re lepers to society? That they don’t exist?” he asked. “A policy that ignores them is a policy of denial.”

  12. Eleanor Rigby Says:

Under the “Other Superintendent” threat Tom Little mentioned an interesting article in today’s paper re: a call for a Public Safety Commissioner. The paper hasn’t updated it’s online version since just before 4 yesterday afternoon. Anyone want to elaborate on what they are calling for?

Just my initial thought without seeing the article, Lowell has a public safety commissioner, although that isn’t his title. His title is City Manager.

  13. Atilla the Nun Says:

My guess is that they’re calling for another level of government that they can control. Everyone knows that Davis and Kendall Wallace were tight. Now, what’s Lynch gonna do? Lemmee see, if the Fire Chief makes 125k and the NEW Police Chief is gonna make 145k, let’s make the salary for the new position, say 175k. Wallace must have somebody special in mind. Cormier perhaps? A little trade-off with Cox, you know, go gracefully and we’ll do a nice brochure for you and take care of your best buddy on the way out. That kind of thing. Politics is chess. It’s not about the next move, it’s the one AFTER the next move.

  14. pete the pirate Says:

hey “wait…”, ?black and white?? what is it about the term “illegal immigrant” that stands out? the ILLEGAL part sorta jumps out at me. and we give them all licenses BECAUSE THEY ARE HERE ANYWAYS!!! lets make them pay taxes first, and contribute like you and i do, instead of being a burden.

  15. waittilnextyr Says:

Well, pete, one of the not-so-black-and-white issues is your assumption that they do not pay taxes. Why do you say that? Is it that their employers do not follow the law and withhold? Or are you saying they are all on welfare? Either way, those are the systems to fix.

At least when you get a license you pay a fee and show competency in driving, and when you register a car you must show proof of insurance. That is not a give-away, and it makes us safer.

I don’t want to minimize the problem of illegal immigrants. There absolutely needs to be action taken. I believe the McCain-Kennedy bill (supported by George Bush, so it would have a chance to become law) would be a wise path to take, but the Republican House will not pass it. Maybe when the Democrats take over in January there will be some movement on this.

  16. Mr. Lynne Says:

I certainly agree there is an issue with income tax and withheld taxes from wages. However, it seems to me that they pay almost all other taxes. I’m not a tax expert and I’m not looking at a statistical study or anything, but let us consider the taxes they pay. Sales tax (pretty obvious), excise tax, various automotive fees, various utility taxes, and since most rent housing they contribute to their landlord’s payment of property tax and various other fees (water for instance). Since most are in the low end of income their tax contribution on wages I would think would be pretty negligible. If that is indeed the case, then it seems to me that they contribute most of the taxes that any citizen would in the same economic circumstances. I’m sure someone has done a study of it out there.

I don’t know how I feel about the whole issue and I find it a perplexing one to consider. But, having said that, let us be clear and consider all the relevant facts as we contemplate the whole immigration issue.

  17. waittilnextyr Says:

A little hypocrisy, KH? Good enough to work in your administration, but not as Governor, eh?

BOLTON, Mass. –Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who hammered Democrat Deval Patrick for his work on behalf of a convicted rapist who claimed his innocence, said Friday that it was irrelevant that her own administration employed a lawyer who also represented the convict.

Judith Goldberg represented Benjamin LaGuer at a failed 2000 Parole Board hearing, and also fought for a DNA test that LaGuer argued would clear him of the 1983 rape of a 59-year-old neighbor.

Goldberg later became deputy legal counsel in the Romney-Healey administration and currently works as a lawyer for the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, the Boston Herald reported.
