When I said that there would be a lot of work ahead of us despite our successes this last year, I meant it. “Mem from somerville” posted a dKos diary which made the recommended list today which was chilling to my Quebecois blood…a grand New England tradition, that of maple sugaring season, may soon become only part of our past, all due to the warming trend which we are all experiencing even as we speak (so much for that snow dusting, it’s all gone already). The maples that survive will all pretty much be north of the border before too long. We’ve already had some notably bad springs for sugaring these last few years.
I guess to understand the impact for me I will have to tell you my secret passion - maple sugar (syrup or solid form) is my absolute favorite flavor in the world. My brother and I inherited this addiction from my French Canadian father, and members of his family actually ran sugaring businesses in Quebec back in the day. The disruption in maple syrup production will probably mean a higher price (think real maple syrup is expensive now??).
You’ll know that crisis is upon us when my maple syrup habit overtakes a full 10% of my income. (Don’t tell Mr. Lynne.)

My uncle (and my grandfather before him) makes maple syrup back in southern Indiana. It’s not quite the same, as you might imagine (though it’s not bad at all, really; just a little weaker).
I have offered him bunk space if he wants to come up here and learn a thing or two from the masters.
