Thursday Open Thread

by at 10:57 am.

Deadlines, deadlines, so here’s a place for chatting for now.

This thread over at BMG on the budget is really good, if you haven’t read it.

Others writing about the budget proposal include David Eisenthal and Susan of Beyond 495. Charley consolidates some of the information found at various threads on BMG.

Off topic from the budget, this weekend kicks of Women’s Week in Lowell (and of course, Women’s Month). This Saturday, Western Avenue Studios is a major venue for cultural events celebrating women (men invited of course!), with our normal First Saturday open studios event plus many Woman’s Week additions. Here’s the full list, and here’s an overview:

Healing Negative Body Image Through Art - Deb Dixon, 10am - 1pm, Studio 402
Femmage = Feminine Collage + Assemblage - Friends Fabric Art, Noon - 1pm, Studio 304
The 21st Century Knitter - Amber Daniels Cook, 1pm start . . . open ended close, Studio 332
Jewelry’s Dual Role—Adornment and Memento - Heather Wang, 2pm - 3pm, Studio 416

Powerful Women Portraits - Friends, Mothers, and Others - Meghan Moore, noon - 5pm (drop in), Studio 513
Keeping It All Together Potluck, 5pm - 7pm, 3rd Floor

    Here’s something to discuss:

Even voluntary socialist associations are not working, so why would the involuntary socialism of Deval Patrick work any better?

  2. K-R-S Says:

Josh! What on Earth does your comment have to do with Women’s Week activities?

  3. Lynne Says:

Well, it is an open thread, other than the fact I used it to remind people about an upcoming event. :)

But, I’d also refer Josh to the thread here at BMG because this has been hashed over incessantly already. Josh: Apples, oranges. ‘Nuff said. Here, I’ll even quote my own comment on the thread:

Neither communism, nor pure capitalism, will ever work. Both extremes are seriously flawed and eventually totally break down. However, combining the aspect of sharing and spreading wealth with the aspect of allowing greedy bastards to do well for themselves strikes a balance which helps to soften the flaws of each and keep a system stable.

Pure communism, you’re right, it ends in stagnation. Humans just aren’t evolved enough as a species to live like that on a large scale - yet. But pure capitalism ends in feudalism and a stratification of wealth which would put Marie Antoinette to shame.

By the way, we in the US have never had a totally pure capitalist system, and we have been at our most prosperous for the most amount of our population for the longest periods of time when we have been our least closest to pure capitalism. Go ahead, dispute it.

Haha you know I just had to bust your balls.

But seriously, how come no mention of this:

  5. Mr. Lynne Says:

While many interesting things happen on the national scene each day, this blog tends to be more locally focused and so not every national issue that comes up winds up on this blog. Besides, Lynne has to find time to bring home some bacon as well. ;)

Speaking of the Moonie Times, how would you like to work for this Editor-in-Chief:

  6. Lynne Says:

Actually, I’ve been meaning to write about Meehan’s proposal - I’ll tell you, we will miss him if he goes. I’m quickly becoming a fan of his. It takes guts, even now that homosexuality is more accepted, to take on this issue which was so contentious in the 90s.
