MA-05: O’Brien Bows Out

by at 1:09 pm.

This from the O’Brien camp:

STATEMENT FROM DAVID O’BRIEN REGARDING THE UPCOMING SPECIAL ELECION IN THE 5TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
The past month has been one of the most exciting times of my life. I have enjoyed touring every town in the district, meeting and talking with voters, and learning their concerns.

Everywhere I went people responded enthusiastically to my message of bringing real change to Washington. Unfortunately, the dynamics of this special election race made it very difficult for a non-elected first-time congressional candidate without personal financial resources to compete. Therefore, after much thought and discussion with my family and campaign team, I have come to the decision that I will not be a candidate for Congress in this special election.

I appreciate the support I have received from countless friends and citizens. I look forward to continuing my life’s dedication to serving my community and country. I have been fortunate and proud to have worked alongside such great public servants as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, and Ted Kennedy. I plan to continue my activism on behalf of the Democratic Party both as a member of the Democratic National and State Committees.

So, now there’s only five people in the race - Donoghue, Eldridge, Feingold, Miceli, and Tsongas

Wait, flyboy’s there too. He might even attract other Republicans and make it a two-party primary day.

I see that Dick Howe wonders where Miceli has been. Is that a vapor candidacy or is he really running?

  2. moonlight Says:

OBRIEN IS OUT ONE LESS LIBERAL WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT

  3. Mike Combs Says:

David has done up-close, hands-on work on issues that really matter, like Americorps and affordable housing. He wasn’t my first choice for the seat, but he’s genuine about his sense of civic duty and we’re lucky to have his involvement.

I do wish he hadn’t included Joe Lieberman (CFL-CT) in his list of “great public servants”.

  4. Jacob Says:

I have to say that the “now there’s only five candidates” line is pretty presumptuous as the Ogonowski candidacy is no joke.

  5. howiejames Says:

I don’t believe Ogonoski has any legs outside Dracut, but we should be ready to support whoever our candidate turns out to be in the general, the same way everyone rallied around Governor Patrick last fall.I am supporting Barry Finegold ,and while I’m shooting my mouth off Joe Biden for president!

  6. Lynne Says:

As far as the Dem primary is concerned there are only five candidates.

As a liberal blogger, that’s the arena I am primarily concerned with, especially right now as there’s no challenger on the other side.

So it’s pretty nitpicky to point that out.

    Hey, hi Howie! How’s things?

  7. 6th MIDDLESEX REGT. Says:

DNC AND RNC COMMITTEES WILL SPEND MILLIONS IN THE 05-MA RACE. IT WILL COME DOWN TO ANTI-WAR AND PRO-WAR RACE. THIS OFF YEAR MAY SET THE AGENDA FOR THE NATION FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS. THE 05-MA RACE WILL BE COVERED BY THE NATION AND INTERNATIONAL PRESS.

  8. Jacob Says:

tell that to the national press.

  9. Fran McDougall Says:

Jim Miceli attended the 3rd Middlesex Area Democrats honorees brunch in Waltham this morning. Barry Fiegold, Jamie Eldredge, and Niki Tsongas also spoke. I don’t know where Eileen Donoghue was. She must have had a prior commitment.
Since this district is composed of largely progressive Democrats who supported Deval Patrick, Miceli ran into some in attendance who briskly chastised him for his stand on the equal rights marriage issue. I would think that after this outing, it’s one of the few times I have seen him out in the district, that we may be seeing him throw in the towel very shortly!

  10. Lynne Says:

Can we please not use ALL CAPS? It is considered a form of shouting. And I already have a headache from allergies. :)

  11. Turch Says:

Fran, are you referring to the greater Lowell area Democrats? My understanding from these posts is that Donoghue was invited to their May meeting. Can someone confirm that?

  12. Paul@01852 Says:

Turch the 3rd Middlesex Area Democrats (MAD) are NOT GLAD. 3rd-MAD covers Third Middlesex Senatorial District which includes: Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lexington - Pcts. 3, 8, 9, Lincoln, Sudbury - Pcts. 1, 4, WALTHAM and Weston.

  13. Fran McDougall Says:

Thannks, Paul. It is confusing at times. MAD or GLAD we’re great, as long as we’re not bad or sad.

  14. Turch Says:

Thanks, Paul. Right on, Fran :)

  15. EaBo Clipper Says:

Ogonowski has garnered more national press than any of the other candidates. Using news.google.com to search his name right after the announcement showed that hundreds of news outlets picked up the story. Including international outlets. Some of you are discounting his candidacy. I wish you would, but I doubt the DNCC is.

He has broad reach outside of Dracut. I have talked to activists across the 5th, the state and the country. There is a buzz about his candidacy.

On the war point. We do not know where he stands vis a vis the war. As he is being honorable and waiting until he no longer wears the uniform of the United States to publicly comment.
