A smart move from the Eldridge campaign, and a great way to start a discussion with voters:
Eldridge Continues Health Care Debate
Holds Viewing of SickoACTON Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) is hoping to heat up the debate on health care. Eldridge, a strong advocate for universal, single-payer health care is inviting the four other Democratic candidates from the MA-05 race, as well as the community, to a viewing of Michael Moore new film Sicko. The film takes a look at the American health care system and the need for reform.
Eldridge said he hopes to continue the dialog about health care reform.
“There are 47 million Americans without health insurance including many children,” says Eldridge. “This can be fixed by universal, single-payer health care, and when I get to Washington I will help lead that charge.”
Eldridge hopes that the other candidates will adopt his stance on health care after seeing the film.
“Representative Eldridge has been a leader on health care reform and will be as a Congressman,” says campaign manager Jeremy Wade. “We want to bring the other candidates to the discussion we are having with the community.”
The showing will take place at 12:40pm Thursday July 5th at the National Amusements Showcase Cinemas on 32 Reiss Avenue in Lowell. The Eldridge campaign is paying for tickets to the showing. Eldridge will be taking questions before the film at 12:15 and at the conclusion of the film. If you would like to attend the event please contact neel@jamieforcongress.com.
My husband and I went to see it last night. The movie has a very convincing premise: our health care is broken, and it’s because of the for-profit system we are mired in…the only industrialized nation in the world with such a system. It goes over the facts about how America’s health care system is no where near the best in the world; tackles the myths about single payer system; and does so in a very entertaining and often poignant way. The stories of the so-called insured people in the film will tear your heart out. Join Jamie for this viewing and discussion about the issue. You truly won’t regret it.

I can see by the scheduling that “Jamie” has no interest in communicating with anyone that works for a living. He’ll have his audience of choice.

Artis: Not sure what your point is. Doubt there is a ‘there’ there anyway.

He means to say that normal people cant go see a movie on a thursday before 5 oclock. He means to say that normal people that make up the electorate in the merrimack valley.

I understand what he said, but using that as ‘evidence’ about the sector of the electorate that Jamie is supposedly focused on is sloppy at best.
Besides which, how many people do you suppose will be taking the day after the fourth of July off?
I wonder what the difference in price would have been between a matinee?

OK, this is stupid. ArtisFun is just being sour because they hate liberals. That’s fine, but such a negative response is more indicative of that fact than the real issues at hand.
Plus, I’m guessing lots of people are off on Thursday, it being, I dunno, the day after a major holiday which lands in the middle of the week. Also, Jamie wants the other candidates to come and see it (don’t know if they will, but he invited them), and I’m guessing trying to schedule ANYthing after 5pm or on weekends is impossible. I wouldn’t want to give the other candidates any excuses to not show either!
But whatever, cast what dispersions you want to, I suppose. They didn’t come off as credible, and I doubt you’ll change any minds of the people who do or will support Eldridge.

That’s what I was going to say. You may be able to reserve a theater easily before 5pm, but after 5pm they’re going to be scheduling a lot of movies… and not so many events like Eldridge is putting on.
Hey, he’s offering people free movie tickets. Anyone can come - including his opponents. Why complain?

Nice gimmick and all. I’m sure Jamie’s people have written up a snappy response for when the four primary opponents turn him down (or ignore him).
What’s truly sad to me is that Jamie is clearly the best candidate, but I don’t know if anyone in that district is ever going to find out. Jamie needs more than a gimmick to break through.
What he really needs is a prime time tv debate. Or a total collapse by Niki’s “name recognition is all I need” campaign.

C’mon Jamie. This is a gimmick and not substantive. Why doesn’t Finegold invite people to see the movie about what happened the the electric car? He’s for alternate fuels. Maybe Miceli can do an invite to the “Time Machine” and the politics we left behind.
For someone who claims to be a substantive candidate, why is Jamie stooping to gimmicks and inviting his opponents to see this movie? Is he after ink or real dialogue? Is he serious? Is this progressive?
Try these tacts Jamie:
After the movie, wage a protest against the theater owners who likely don’t give the part-timers health coverage.
If you get to Washington, invite President Bush and Dick Cheney to see “Apocalypse Now.”
In any event, I’ll be somewhere else on Thursday.

Actually, it was quite substantive. The discussion afterwards allowed people to listen to his specific proposals, why he thinks they will work, what we and he can do to achieve them, and to ask him questions (some of them quite hard). For those who could not be at the health care debate, this was an opportunity to see him get real focused on the issue.
