target! cool.

Too bad Target is one of the Evil Empires…this is the company that said it was OK for a pharmacist to deny a legal prescription for the morning after pill if their religion says so. As far as I know, they have not rescinded that policy. I won’t shop there. (Ikea has nicer things anyway.)
However, it’s better than Wal-crap, and will anchor that sagging location nicely, maybe be an impetus for growth of the commercial businesses in that mall.
But…where’s my Trader Joe’s???
(I’d love to know if the city administration had anything to do with recruiting Target? If so, kudos to them.)

I would shop there if it wern’t for their politics.

Target will be a plus for that center, although a better exit from the connector inbound may be needed to relieve congestion on Plain St. That is an area where the city/state could help.
But, do not expect a retail outlet of this kind to be significant as far as economic development is concerned. It will be a net outflow of money from the area. Hopefully, there is no tax break so that at least it will help with the property tax base.

Is there other retail space availabe in the same plaza? Hopefully it will spur other local small businesses to start there.

Waittil, that was the first thing I thougt of, when I heard about Target coming in. Plain St, can be a traffic nightmare. I would think a ramp that dumps right into the parking lot would be sufficient.
I think Mass Higway would have to be in on a ramp configuration.

Target, like it has been said, is better than Wal-Mart, so I think we should be happy. We already have two Wal-Marts sitting on our borders causing us traffic and not raising us any revenue. Getting some decent national retail to consider moving to a more central part of Lowell for the first time since what, that Sears closed in that plaza how many years ago, was quite the feat I’m sure. We have to remember Lowell is a poorer city with ancient infrastructure, relatively poor highway access, and is right next to New Hampshire (Which is why plans to get a GAP or even a Trader Joes into Downtown Lowell seem well-intentioned but doomed to me). If the city actively recruited Target, again, kudos.
I really wish they’d done something with Central Plaza instead (there was a Zayres in there many, many years ago…) but I can understand that the Gorham St traffic is a nightmare as is at times. I’m hoping the much more accessable JAM neighborhood brings in some real wide-appeal retail/entertainment options, but the news today said the city might loose some funding on that again, and I’m being careful not to be too optimistic about the plans for that area anyhow.

…and on another topic completely, the poll results in The Sun showed a 3/4 majority seemingly not having any sympathy for the scheduling of GrotonFest over Yom Kippur. I understand that the scheduling was an honest mistake. In my opinion that’s not an excuse, it’s not like Judaism is a rare faith you don’t date-check around. I’m really not sure what to make of this. Do people not understand that this holiday is a Big Deal for Jews, or do they just not care?

Corey: I would think it would depend on the Jewish person or family. Some are not really religious, and others quite so. I imagine though, that this is a pretty big insult. Why no one consulted a decent calendar is beyond me - most major holidays of most major religions are on most good calendars. It definitely shows a lack of sensitivity, to not have even considered that the date needed looking into.
That said, I’m sure no one meant to leave anyone out, and hopefully this blows over quickly and everyone learns their lesson.

There are several mentions in the Sun today that they should just use the rain date. This seems to me to be an adequate solution.
July 13th, 2007 at 10:37 am
I haven’t seen today’s paper yet (and we all know how late the online edition goes…online), but if the rain date forces it inside and that many vendors can’t show, it’s not the same. My Staples Special calendar pinned to the wall of my cube has Yom Kippur on it. I guess all we can say is lesson learned - but I’m still really shocked at the public for calling the selectman a “crybaby.” Oh well…

Within certain schools of Indian philosophy, such as Tantra, the emphasis in sex as a sacred duty, or even a path to spiritual enlightenment or yogic balance is greatly emphasized. Actual sexual intercourse is not a part of every form of tantric practice, but it is the definitive feature of left-hand Tantra. Contrary to popular belief, “Tantric sex” is not always slow and sustained, and may end in orgasm. For example, the Yoni Tantra states: “there should be vigorous copulation”. However, all tantra states that there were certain groups of personalities who were not fit for certain practices. Tantra was personality specific and insisted that those with pashu-bhava (animal disposition), which are people of dishonest, promiscuous, greedy or violent natures who ate meat and indulged in intoxication, would only incur bad karma by following Tantric paths without the aid of a Guru who could instruct them on the correct path. In Buddhist tantra, actual ejaculation is very much a taboo, as the main goal of the sexual
practice is to use the sexual energy towards achieving full enlightenment, rather than ordinary pleasure. Tantric sex is considered to be a pleasurable experience in Tantra philosophy.
