And with no flinching, either. (I know I’m late to the game, but I’ve been trapped in real estate craziness for two days.)
Dan lays some pretty tight blows to the whole situation, and no one escapes. He lists three recent instances of petty behavior against CM Lynch by Councilors Rita Mercier, Armand Mercier, and Bud Caulfield. I know some of them do read this blog on occasion. Can I just simply take the time to point out, Lynch had nothing to do with the dismissal - er sorry - resignation of John Cox. Punishing Lynch for the ouster of Cox is like grounding a kid from Billerica, who you’ve never met, for the transgressions of your own kid who just lit their sister’s hair on fire. Come on. That sort of behavior doesn’t even belong in junior high, it’s that immature. Maybe in first grade.
No one even knew that Lynch would want to be in the running for the job when Cox gave his letter in to the Council. And maybe Lynch is regretting it still. But if you’re hoping to annoy him to death in order to get him to quit, it’s not going to work. (Lynch and his professional demeanor are actually quite popular. No one misses Cox, kids. Except you. Know what your illogical loyalty reminds me of? The Bush administration.) In the immortal words of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, after fighting yet another lame plot by the geeky, Star-Wars quoting Trio: “So you three have what, banded together to be pains in my ass?”
I love Phelps’ recap of the Nangle snub, the height of this first-grade politics (I expect no less from Nangle):
Then, the height of pettiness. State Rep. Dave Nangle fails to invite Lynch to a fundraiser at which two prominent state officials were in attendance. First, Nangle said no snub was intended, but then had to throw in the following: “I would have no interest in having Bernie at an event like that.” Nice, huh?
Cognative dissonance, anyone? It’s a wonder Nangle’s brain doesn’t freeze from the logic jam.
And Dan has some words for Kazanjian and McMahon, too, echoing what I’ve said in the past:
Meanwhile, two pro-Cox candidates — Alan Kazanjian and Robert McMahon — have thrown their hats in. Oh, but they want you to know they’re not running on a pro-Cox platform. No, even though the “I’m for Cox” folks boasted last summer that they’d have a slate of candidates running this year, all of a sudden, we’re supposed to believe these two candidates have no intention of making Cox an issue.
Dan wasn’t born yesterday, and neither were the voters. At least, that’s my greatest hope.

I’m no fan of Nangle either, but lets look back to the Nangle vs Martin race. This is where all this “pettiness” has its roots. Bill Martin had the endorsement of the retiring Ed Lelacheur. Nangle had a godfather. Martin was on many committees at Sacred Heart Parish, very active. Nangle went to bingo there. Bill Martin was an educated (Holy Cross, I believe) attorney, had much legislative experience working in the State House. Nangle was a meter reader. You don’t think the voters weren’t born yesterday? So in a sense, Nangle has himself to blame for the demise of John Cox. If Nangle hadn’t won that election, he’d be still jumping over doggy-doo,reading meters and State Rep Martin would have never had the opportunity to oust John Cox.

LMAO, interesting rundown. Also, nice refutation of my poor, dashed hope. Thanks a lot.
I keep hearing phrases like “Nangle’s still in Lowell? Where?” and “He’s never around, ever.” Seems like he really honestly should consider resigning. And perhaps moving out of Lowell to wherever he goes (NH?). I wonder if he could possible be able of letting go of the title of state rep. I think he believes it’s molded into his identity or something.

Well, when his peels his cellphone off his cheek, he can be seen jogging around parts of South Lowell, sometimes in the vicinity of Coggins and Broderick’s breakfast meetings. And while we’re at it, has anyone asked him how he got his ex in-laws a permit to build on an undersized lot in the neighborhood? Maybe we’ll find out when he “endorses” a K-andidate in this election.

Hey, POD next time you see my state rep jogging around So. Lowell, would you kindly ask him to answer my e-mail. Thanks.

Over the years, Dan Phelps and I have disagreed on many an issue. He often likes to put down his next door suburban neighbors. This time in today’s column, however, he said exactly what most of us have wanted to say about the little boy behavior in the pro Cox little league gang. Nangle supposedly represents part of my town, East Chelmsford. I’ve never seen him at events in town. He seems to be the “ghost” rep. I recently dealt with him concerning the gay marriage vote. What a hypocrite extolling the sanctity of heterosexual marriage. Bernie will not lower himself to be a part of this political lowlife activity. He will continue to do his job in a professional manner. You probably will disagree with him at times, all of us have, but you’ll know that his decisions are made for the betterment of the City and not to placate any political factions. Way to go Dan Phelps.

Fran,
Keep an eye on the news…you may find out soon that Mr. Lynch is much more politically influenced than anyone thought.

Right on DAN.. It is about time the Sun go tback to it s roots of real journalism and calling out the behaviour of our elected Officials. The Sun has a duty and obligation to let the public know what the story behind the story is.
I hope there is more to come, or was this just “allowed” to be printed because Cox’s “right guard” Campanini was on vacation?
This may resotr my faith that the Sun will be watching the council election, and remind the voters of challenger’s MacMahon and Kaz real motives for running.

Nothing gets accidentally printed down there. It got printed for a reason. The Phelps’ and the Martins’ are old Sacred Heart families. Watch this weekend’s papers and see if maybe something else pops up, cryptically of course. And Mimi, if I see him jogging again, I’ll drive off the road. You really have to see it for yourself.

Quote from Phelps column, ” Lynch retains T.J. McCarthy, Cox’s assistant city manager, knowing it’s the politically expedient thing to do (in addition to the fact that McCarthy is a tireless worker), despite the fact that any new administrator coming in anywhere in the world will want his own team in place — something Cox did when he took over, by the way. ”
Hey Dan, does the name Matt Coggins ring any bells? Coggins is serving as Assistant City Manager under his THIRD city manager, or is it the fact that he’s Kendall’s fair haired boy cause you to forget.
And as far as Nangle’s party is concerned I think he could invite anyone he wanted or not. If there’s a backlash he will have to deal with it.
July 13th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
This legislative delegation “circles the wagons” to protect one of their own. They’re all going to deal with backlash. If you slight one, you’ve slighted them all. They’re thick as thieves. As far as Coggins is concerned, he will be anointed when Wallace is ready to retire. It’s called “let’s pick a manager who’ll be easy to get rid of.” When the time is right, we’ll all know.

Dear God, these three cc are a nightmare. We need to ensure that we get some good cc in there to move this city forward..Fight the fight boys and girls, they need to go bye bye.
