So, George Ramirez indeed has been tapped for a position in the Patrick administration. Congrats to him, and I like him a lot, but despite the fact that I’m grateful for his support of Patrick during the primary (and it was a risk, given that Lowell was a Reilly town and all the political bigwigs were with Tom), I think you can safely say that I, and several other amazing volunteers throughout the state, did a lot more heavy lifting to get Deval elected. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not bitter, and I never did what I did for any sort of actual reward (other than having a governor to be proud of), but it seems hardly fair that politicos who supported Patrick get some sort of way in to nice positions. Ramirez is a good choice of course, and he’ll work hard, and this is no slight against him. It’s just a weird and vaguely disturbing system to me, a die-hard volunteer and activist, that’s all.
Of course, I never applied for any job with Patrick after he got elected (who wants a crazy web designer anyway? and the commute is hell, just ask my husband) but still, I doubt I’ve have any leverage at all to land such a position if I desired one. Harrumph.

Lynne:
You should run for Lt. Gov. and teach Beacon Hill a thing or two. That way you could work just as hard and hire yourself! I’ll print up the signs.

Is that an oblique reference to our friend Dick Cheney? (The guy who was chosen to head the committee to find GW Moron his VP, only to pick his own self?)
No, I’m too dumb, and way too smart, for politics. I long ago resigned myself to the dregs of the trenches. Luckily, I have a blog to bitch about it all on.

I think you have to credit Ramirez with his professional acumen and prior experience, rather than how hard he worked as an election volunteer.

The Governor did not sign the special legislation (sponsored by Miceli) to grant Tewksbury a waiver for the summer salaries of teachers to be postponed until the FY’09 budget. The DOR opposed the deferral, and that is wise, as pushing off today’s problem until tomorrow does not solve the basic budget problem. Let’s hope the Legislature sees the light and doesn’t override.

In general, this was a commentary about the whole status quo between politicians and jobs. I’m certain that Ramirez was qualified; but I’m also pretty sure that the fact he’s an elected official had something to contribute in letting him in the door. It’s a credit to this administration that I trust them to pick the right people for the job, not just hand them out to cronies. But there’s that little bit of cynicism on the other hand, if you know what I mean.
As violations of public trust go, this is totally minor, barely a blip, but it’s a shadow of the reality that is the revolving door between public service and job consideration. Again, this isn’t even in the same county as a Halliberton VP, just…slightly disconcerting to me. The fact is, some people get better consideration than others. In the case of the Bush administration, it’s blatant and practically illegal. In this case, probably one of good qualifications meeting an eager applicant. But then there’s that nagging feeling that ‘just joes’ with the same qualifications might not have as good a chance at the same position as someone with a ‘name.’

Hmmm. Rithy Uong couldn’t get a promotion because as a public official he might have benefitted from his elected position. What excludes Ramirez from having the same conflict? Did he benefit from his election? Or is he okay beccause of the fact he resigned? Did he still have an unfair advantage? And Lynne, I would NEVER compare you to Dick Cheney in any way. Have you shot anyone in the face lately?

The news of CC Ramirez getting a position in the Patrick Administration was expected, what I do not understand are the comments he made about his position on the City Council:
“Asked whether his new job would preclude him from finishing the current [City Council] term, Ramirez was unsure. ‘I have to sit down and look at the responsibilities before I make a decision…’ He added the topic hasn’t come up during discussions with state officials.”
He needs to sit down this morning and make a decision immediately.

Yeah, Ramirez is a smart guy, lawyer, good experience, has learned a bit about government and let’s face it, in a political administration it never hurts to have people who’ve won elections in addition to their other qualifications. The fact that he was an early Patrick supporter helped, no doubt, but I think it’s more about picking someone you know will be loyal than someone who you’re repaying favors to.
