New polls conducted exclusively for Boston’s WBZ-TV are showing that Eileen Donoghue has made a major gain in the Democratic primary race for the Massachusetts 5th District race.
According to the SurveyUSA Election Poll, “Nikki Tsongas remains ahead with a 40% lead but Donoghue is up 13 points, to 29% today, compared an identical SurveyUSA tracking poll released two weeks ago, on 8/14.”
According to WBZ political analyst, John Keller “the new numbers show Tsongas’ lead over Donoghue among seniors has shrunk to just six points. Her once 38-point bulge among liberals is down to a mere four points, within our survey’s margin of error.”
And the analysis of the SurveyUSA poll points out that “Given the unpredictability of a never-before Day-After-Labor-Day primary, with momentum for Donoghue and comparatively flat support for Tsongas, the outcome could be closer than anticipated and an upset cannot be ruled out.”
REMEMBER: Get out the Vote for Eileen and get everyone you know to vote for her on September 4th!

A little drama is good for everyone and it will help get people to vote. I still like being eleven points ahead after Eileen’s ad, own money, and her endorsements. As Keller said, candidates would kill for this kind of margin. Everyone always knew is would come down to GOTV. It will be an active weekend!

Actually the numbers are not surprising, and I don’t think they can be turned around at this point.
It’s going to the election of ghosts. Keeping in mind that in the next census a congressional seat in Massachusetts will be lost, which seat do you think that will be?

In regards to Tsongas, who is totally playing the “bereaved widow” in pursuit of seat with her husbands name, here is an an article in todays Boston Herald, http://thetrack.bostonherald.com/moreTrack/view.bg?articleid=1019903 .

Well, Mimi, it wasn’t us!

I think this is a good answer to Lynne, who seemed surprised that I indicated Eileen was the only real challenge here. The numbers are showing it. Unfortunately, it will be a split vote of people who vote for Tsongas and people who don’t vote for Tsongas. If there were just one candidate not named Tsongas, like Eileen, it might be a closer race. I’d suggest that Eileen has run such a good campaign that she could win it 1-on-1.

Well, at least what Eileen’s been saying about this being a two-horse race is proving accurate. She’s clearly distanced herself from the rest of the also-rans.
However, if you look more closely at the numbers, you’ll realize the race is stil out of her grasp. While Donahue gained, she gained at the others’ expense, not Niki’s. Tsongas actually gained two points from the previous poll. Had the poll revealed a decline in Tsongas’ numbers, then I’d be tempted to say this was a real race.
Oh well, at least you Donahue supporters have reason to tune in to the election results. I admire your dedication.

The candidate whose support is based on her record is going to see better turnout than the candidate whose support is based on, “Hey, I recognize that name!”

Poor, poor Joe. So naive. As if this would be the first time a “name” candidate won an election where there was little to no interest.

Well, we’ll know soon enough. I say we’re looking at a very close race.

Looking at the Boston Herald article, and doing the math with the years–the paper came short of calling Niki a “Home Wrecker”—More of Dems gone wild….

Oh Please!! I was in Seabrook and Salisbury for the past 3 days. The Donoghue signs all over Rte. 286 (public property) were obnoxious!!!

Donoghue has lent her campaign another $40,000? She obviously has had difficulty convincing people to contribute. Is she is attempting to buy the 5th District Congressional seat?…….I also found the Kendall W. chat on Saturday amusing. He criticizes Karla BB for not hiring/retaining local people within the Lowell School Department. But his own congressional candidate (Eileen Donoghue) is guilty of the very same thing. She never supports a local person for Superintendent or City Manager. I hope voters think of that tomorrow when casting their vote. What does her record as a CC / Chair of the SC really say about her claim to be the “local candidate”?

Anonymous, Ms Tsongas is most definately NOT a local candidate. Had to move back into the district to campaign? Furthermore, I find her ads disingenuine and the use of her husbands name to tug on the heartstrings, terrible. No one can fault her for moving onto the next mate, however, be truthful. I find MS. Tsongas to be a liar.

Spade- Ms. Tsongas did not have to move back to the district to campaign- but she chose to………So, should she have changed her name after her husband passed away?……..I find Donoghue’s use of the Lowell Sun to promote her candidacy to be very concerning. Will the newspaper be dictating her positions in Congress? Scary thought…….
