City Council Meeting 9/11

by at 10:17 pm.

Tonight the Lowell City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting extended the contract of City Manager Bernie Lynch another two years through July 2010. The discussion focused on creating stability for the City as well as rewarding the City Manger for a job well done.

All of the CCs praised the Manager for his efforts, work ethic and success. However, the vote was 6-3; two voted against because they do not agree in giving contracts to a City Manager and one voted against because he did not agree with an extension.

Congratulations CM Lynch and keep up the good work!

There was only one other major issue, a motion to release a legal opinion. Mr. Lynne made his inaugural appearance as a LiL blogger and has already posted on this issue.

The only non-CC member to speak on the contract extension was David Koch, who is a leader in the Back Central neighborhood group and is a challenger in this year’s CC race. Dave spoke from his heart and praised the CM for his work on behalf of the neighborhoods. David, whom I have met on a number of occasions and like, used the metaphor “a house divided” to describe the current state of the CC.

Obviously from the comments made by some CCs, those remarks were not welcome. Bur for those of us who follow the CC closely, we truly believe that there is a 6-3 split. It has nothing to do with the CM, it has to do with a philosophical approach to City government.

We came to this conclusion from watching meetings for the past 2 years. We came to this conclusion from closely following proceedings. In spite of the efforts of certain elements in the media in this town, the general public can judge for itself what is best for the City. From my posts on CC meetings it is quite obvious where my sentiments lie. I want a CC that has vision and courage to think big. A CC that is inclusive, transparent and responsive. One that demands the same from the CM and his staff.

Outside of setting the tax rate, I do not expect any major issues to come up for the rest of the year. I certainly do not expect any controversy until the November election. It has been a long two years. But I am excited and optimistic about the future of this City. I look forward to a healthy City Council campaign, that will focus on moving this City FORWARD.

In my opinion this entire Cox-Lynch thing is ridiculous. This is my first time voting in the city council election, and I can tell you that I will not be voting for either of the Mericer’s. Caulfield may only get my vote becuase of his help with flood victims. Either than that, let’s get rid of these 3. Lynch is doing a good job and he is our city manager. GET OVER IT!

  2. Thom B Says:

Not too surprising a vote. Rita actually reminds me of a lyric from a song in a Marx brothers movie. “I don’t care what you have to say, it doesn’t matter anyway, whatever it is I’m against it.”

  3. joe Says:

I don’t understand how there can still be this residual loyalty to Cox, and hostility to the anti-Cox councilors, after those Department of Revenue letters were finally made public.

  4. Kate Says:

Okay..so I was trying to figure out why anyone would be so against the extension. What is the big deal? Nobody has their hands tied. If they want to get rid of Lynch they just have to fire him. That’s when it hit me. They dont want to FIRE him…they want the contract to run out…say they dont believe in contracts, Lynch leaves, they get their guy in and all is back to the way they want it. This scares me……Anyway as far as voting for Caulfield, they are one in the same, Caulfield, Merciers. A lot of the councilors did things for the flood victims in their own way..I know some of the attorneys on the city council offered free legal assistance and advice. I wouldnt vote for him just because of that. None of the 3 are getting my vote, EVER.

    Kate:

Im glad that you said that. Because by sheer coincidence, I was in trouble earlier today and I needed help and Caulfield was right near me. Im not going to get into specifics, but what he told me was a blatant lie; and did absolutely nothing to help. Again, Im not going to into what exactly happened but Caulfield just lost my vote.

  6. Concerned Citizens Says:

I will never vote for Mercier, Caulfield, Mercier even if I only vote for 5 councilors, but who else that is running is ok? Can Eileen Donahue win if she is a “write in” ?

  7. waittilnextyr Says:

“…but who else that is running is ok?”

There will be plenty of discussion on this board over the next several weeks to answer that question. Two years ago Lynne put together a questionnaire (with some input from her readers) and sent it to the candidates. Not all responded, but those that did generally provided some good information to help in determining your vote.

This year, some candidates have got out ahead of the campaign with some pretty good websites with a lot of information. Maybe a list of those should be provided here.

  8. The Prince of Darkness Says:

Caulfield is undoubtedly the lowest life form found at City Hall. Typical bottom-feeding, back-slapping, free food-grabbing politician who has had the masses fooled for years. He almost bought the farm in an election a few years back until he sold his soul, slipped on his bunny pajamas and hopped into bed with the Lowell Sun, where he’s been ever since. I wish his “base” could visit this blog so that this charade could come to a close. He’s got all his bases covered, living la vida loca with the paper and working for Mc Donough. Someone ask him how many times he was “asked to retire” at Raytheon. Let the games begin.

  9. Tim Little Says:

Speaking of the council elections, it looked like Curtis LeMay was having quite the shindig at Club Lafayette tonight. Anyone happen to check it out?

I really wish you would curtail your personal attacks. I am not asking for you to be censored, but come on. You are a creative writer, (Voldemort, how many people would I used that reference) but I think you need to be civil. Sorry for the public lecture but I do not know who you are nor do I have your e-mail to contact you personally. Your commentary sets a bad tone. We can make our point without the personal attack and the sarcastic, Comedy Central humor.

  11. Mr. Lynne Says:

But I get most of my news from Comedy Central.
