After finishing up a primary race which featured a debate per week on the Democratic side, the general election will only have three full debates; that is a forum where the Democrat (Niki Tsongas) and Republican (Jim Ogonowski) candidates will be present with the three un-enrolled, Independents Patrick Murphy, Kurt Hayes, and Constitution Party Candidate, Kevin Thompson.
There has been some rumblings and criticism that three is not enough but if I were running either the Tsongas or Ogonowski campaigns, I would say that three is plenty. Now, if the two campaigns made promises and now are backing down because strategically it does not work for them, then that is a different story.
If I was one of the sponsors or promoters of these others debates that got shut down, such as the League of Women Voters in Chelmsford (see Lowell Sun article), I would not be pleased. And if I was one of the other three candidates, I would be angry.
It appears that it was the Ogonowski side who decided not to debate more than three times. Tsongas just finished a long and arduous debate schedule in the Democratic primaries; she is definitely ready for prime time. However, Jim has limited experience and he certainly cannot be put in a position to be derailed by the other candidates.
However, the problem with a limited campaign period is that people are not paying attention; you need to engage them. During the primary, the discussions and arguments that took place during those debates/forums kept the race in the papers and on their airwaves. Now, I wonder if the electorate has gone back to sleep. If that is the case, what is the candidates’ strategy to wake them up?
Maybe the Bill Clinton visit next Sunday will be that catalyst!

I consider it a blessing that we don’t have to sit through debates. Most of the responses are so scripted that you know the answer by heart. I know, I know, the League of Women Vultures exists only for these things, but they’ll just have to settle for a bake sale this year. And hide your wives and daughters, Clinton’s coming.

What’s the rejoinder to that? “Stay out of the men’s rooms, there’s a Republican in town?”
Or, “Make your appointment with the DC Madam or Louisiana Madam early, there’s a Republican in town?”
Where’s the Republican outcry over criminal activity when it’s one of their own?

There were well over 20 debates in the primary, and you still had only 22% turnout. The only people that show up to those things are activists with their minds made up already. They are pointless. Broadcast TV debates are the only ones that count because you just might capture a voter’s attention for three whole minutes while they are channel surfing. I read the Sun article, and it sounds like the Chelmsford League made their plans based on a lot of assumptions, and weren’t promised anything by the two nominees, so oh well.

I kind of prefer “Warn the troops, there’s a Republican in town who wants to lie them into a war that they’ll be forced to fight with inadequate armor, in inadequate numbers, to ‘liberate’ people that don’t want them there. Oh, and then they’ll get screwed again when they come home to find their VA benefits slashed by Republicans.”
But MikeC’s first one is probably a better bumper sticker.

3 debates is more than enough, especially at this point.
It was Niki Tsongas herself that said 3 debates is plenty .
As for lack of debates signaling low turnout, I don’t see it. There were like 20-25 debates for the primary which was ridiculous; all of the candidates said the same thing in every one. I think everyone that has been following the race just wants it to be over already.
Whoever wins will have to run for reelction next year. And whoever wins wont be around for long once MA-5 goes away.

Long enough to get the pension, I’ll bet.

Forgive me if I point out that there are 5 candidates running for office, not two!
The Chelmsford LoWV should have held the debate regardless of whether the “major party” candidates show up or not!
Maybe they should change their name to the Chelmsford League of Democratic/Republican Women Voters!
