Dogs and their human companions will soon have a park of their own in Lowell, raff, raff. A group of local dog lovers organized to form Lowell Unleashed. Working with the City, these dedicated individuals were able to achieve their stated mission:
…establishing a fenced in, off-leash dog park where Lowell citizens can exercise their dogs in a clean, safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property or wildlife. To develop a well-maintained space open to all dog lovers who are willing to uphold the park’s rules and regulations.
This park will not only satisfy the needs of dog-owners but also of equal importance, please the rest of us. There are too many dogs in Lowell with no place to go. The park will be located on PAWtucket Boulevard; at the old tennis court by the River, near the rotary.
In order to help pay for this park, Dog Unleashed is planning a fundraiser at JFK Civic Center, Wag-a-PAWlooza, on Sunday, October 28, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. There are a number of activities planned, including Lowell Police K-9 Demonstration; Lowell Humane Society Adoption Parade; Agility Demonstration; Canine Costume Contest; Best Canine Trick Contest; Canine Good Citizen Certification.
Entrance is free for humans but dogs need to pay $10 and if they bring a canine friend, he/she pays $5. If you are interested, do check out their website.

Are you talking about the Rotary near Christian Hill and the Treatment Plant, across the river from Nesmith Street?
That’s the VFW Highway. Pawtucket Blvd doesn’t begin until you’re almost to University Ave.

Pawtucket Blvd. begins at the traffic light, traveling north, where Varnum Ave bears to the right just before Lowell General Hospital.

Sounds like a great idea, that site right before the rotary near the “candy canes” near Saints Memorial. However that is an awful spot with high traffic, one false move and you could have a dead dog on 110. I actually would like to see the police enforce the leash law more with stiffer penalties. Near my house on Christian Hill there are plenty of dogs off leash all the time coming out of their yards barking and coming after my dogs and myself. Not to mention people who let their dogs poop at Gage and McPherson and don’t pick it up. That my fellow Lowellians is the HEIGHT of ignorance. You want a dog you need to pick up your poop. I feel bad for the dogs that bolt out of their yards off leash and either get in a fight and roughed up or even worse get hit by a vehicle. Buses aren’t very forgiving.

Does this mean the idea of having one downtown is dead?
September 26th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
RIL,
Serious question..Where in downtown would you put one?
September 26th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Don’t know. Just know it was discussed. If they can put up a kid’s playground somewhere around the Mack Plaza, I’m sure there’s a small plot of land somewhere that can be converted.
Somewhere off the Market St. Garage? Near the proposed JAM development perhaps?
September 26th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Some have said that the JAM project is going to the dogs, and now that may be taken literally with Ril’s suggestion.

Having one in Hamilton Canal district development makes sense. Much of area is vacant now and new open space could incorporate a small area for this. Not a bad idea Right.
September 27th, 2007 at 8:46 am
Do we really want to use taxable property in the Hamilton Canal district for a dog park? As a tax payer I would be really annoyed if they put one there.
And for a dog park you need more than a small parcel of land. I would think you need 1/4 to 1/2 acre. If the dogs can’t run, what’s the point?
September 27th, 2007 at 10:15 am
A dog park requires more than a ’small space’. If you’re a dog owner, then you most likely already have a ’small space’ to exercise your dog: your yard. What’s really needed is an acre or two of wide open space for the dogs to run free, exercise, and socialize.
Congrats to Unleashed for making this happen, and the city for responding.

Thanks inside/outside! Every now and then, a bling squirrell finds a nut.
Alpha, all these new residents moving into the downtown condos don’t have a yard. I’m sure they’d appreciate any area, no matter how big or small. So would those of us who must walk the sidewalks and avoid stepping in it.

What, you mean the old Freudenberg plot with all the quicksandish mud isn’t an official dog park?
In general, downtown Lowell doesn’t have a nice ‘active’ park - never mind dogs for now. You’re not supposed to do anything but sit at Boardinghouse, for example. If I want to go play frisbee or something, I usually go all the way to Shedd or at least Fort Hill. I’d like a place that I can walk to relatively easily. Maybe what we need is a rennovated South Common, and some improvements to make getting there from Dutton St easier.

Thanks for the publicity! We will keep you updated as the construction of the park gets nearer…
For those of you looking for a park downtown, the current location is only a short stroll across the Bridge St bridge! It also runs right along the newly expanded section of Riverwalk!

Hey Ogo Backer
In response to:
“However that is an awful spot with high traffic, one false move and you could have a dead dog on 110.”
From what I understand the plans are to have the entire area fenced in with safety in/out gates from the parking area to prevent this.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Good to know, that’s excellent! I hope it happens but if it needs to be by te candy canes I hope there is a big safe fence!

WOW! Well first of all, Thank you Mimi from the bottom of our Wagging Tails for the free publicity!!!!
There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions here, along with a great amount of curiosity. We would love to have all dog lovers take a look at our website as well as join Lowell Unleashed for our very Public meetings that take place every last Monday of the month at City Hall in the Mayors Recption Room at 7:00p.m.
Believe me when I say that our Organization truely is made up of Dog LOVERS and we would never want any harm to come to any dog! This park is much needed in the City, and every measure will be taken as much as we can control for all visiting dogs and owners safety!
We are very excited and Hope there will be more dog owners just as excited about this new park!
And Yes, It will be located where the candy cane pipes are that you see by the Rotary!!!
Hope to see all of you soon, At WAG-a-PAWlooza, the New Park, or at City Hall!
Bow-Wow!

RiL: Do you have any data on how many of these downtown condo owners are dog owners? I doubt many, if any. First, it’s just short-sighted and cruel to own a dog when you live in a dense urban setting. Second, many condo assoc rules prohibit pets.
Corey: Downtown doesn’t have a park?? Have you been over to the RiverWalk? Especially over at Monarch On The Merrimack, behind Tsongas, and at UML. They’ve done a great job there. In fact, while running down there a weekend or two ago I saw a fellow with a pair of dogs exiting the Monarch and exercising his dogs in that Park and down the Riverwalk. Plus, as you said there’s always South Common.
Aside from the dog park, what I’m looking forward to is when they finish the Riverwalk over to Mass Mills, then connect with the Concord River Greenway. Kudos to all these groups and the city for making Lowell a liveable city.
September 27th, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Edit: I meant “Renaissance on the River”, the old Lawrence Mills. Monarch is down river a bit. (and in financial troubles…maybe another bank sale someday?)

Alpha, the canine census hasn’t come in yet, but my eyes tell me there are probably dozens, if not more. That number will surely rise as the number of condos rises (yes, most allow dogs).
As for whether it’s cruel, I’ll let you and the puppy people battle that out. Personally, I’ll take a nice big dog in a nice big yard any day. But to each his own.
