Sun Believes Patrick’s Casino Numbers?

by at 3:36 pm.

In today’s editorial, the Sun encourages the legislature to seriously consider Governor Patrick’s casino proposal. It appears the Sun didn’t really look much past Patrick’s own numbers in making this recommendation. I thought newspapers were supposed to be critical thinkers, especially when it comes to policy from politicians? Now, suddenly, they lose their cynicism?

Or does this have something to do with the chief editor’s, er, penchant for gambling at New York racetracks?

I’ll admit, Patrick’s casino numbers look succulent. All those jobs, and look at the state revenues we would get! What the Sun seems determined to ignore is that these numbers appear to be from the casino industry itself and do not bear out in multiple independent studies.

The casino industry is a clever salesmen. They downplay the costs associated with bringing in resort (slot) casinos into a state, and inflate the revenue projections. If we’re looking for a fix for our budget woes in Massachusetts, this is not going to be the answer. There is every evidence from non-casino-funded sources that we would lose jobs and revenue if we allowed casinos. At best, we should be looking to do a completely objective study, fully funded, via a non-interested party, before even considering doing this. This has not been done. The Governor didn’t wait for such a study when making his proposal, and didn’t propose doing one. I don’t know why the Governor believes the casino’s projections, but you know how your mom always told you, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is? Well, this is a good example.

But I would have hoped that the Lowell Sun editorial page, where cynicism about government is often evident, would do the due diligence we need from our media. Instead, they just want to take the Governor, and the casino lobby, at their word. It boggles the mind.

I don’t think that casinos have been promoted as economic development, but rather as a source of revenue. Since the majority of the total revenue comes from the people of the State, it is likely that it is a net loser. However, there are two factors that mitigate that loss, one is that currently a good amount of revenue from Massachusetts residents is leaving the State for other casinos, and that money is totally lost, none coming back in State revenues or State jobs. The second is that casino revenue may come from out-of-state, and even out-of-country, especially when the casino is a relatively “classy” resort, a destination that can be combined with other attractions in the area. And there will also be a short-term spike in both State revenue (through license payments) and jobs (in construction of the casinos and the related infrastructure). My biggest concern is not with the casinos, but rather with the investment that may be required by the State and localities. Those “investments” should really be paid totally by the private investors in any deal that is struck.

Have you guys listened to “Ask the Governor” on the radio? This guy is really sharp, not to mention hilarious. His quips are even funnier and more clever than Jim Broude’s, and he’s not a broadcaster on the air several hours a day. He uses the the Socratic meathod excellently to make great (and funny) points for the listeners, even though the right-leaning caller is often unable to grasp the lesson. I like this guy a lot and have some confidence that he knows what he’s doing.

I generally believe that of him as well, Peter, which is what makes this proposal of his so disturbing to me. The difference between what casinos say we’ll get out of it, and what experience in other states, and other studies say is so drastic, I can’t believe Patrick is taking them on their word.

The problem is that comprehensive (non-casino-funded) sources are harder to find, and so much easier to ignore. I am angry that Patrick didn’t come out and say, “hey, maybe this is a good idea, let’s do our own impact and revenue study so WE the state can get an objective view without bias.” He didn’t. He just came out and said, “let’s do what this guy says!” where “this guy” is someone known to be paid by casino big business.

Just because the guy is smart and funny on the radio doesn’t exempt him from scrutiny. Hey, the Mittster was pretty smooth, too, and buyers got real remorse after electing him. Now, Patrick is a damn sight better than Mitt all around, but on this, he’s wrong.

    Newspapers? Critical thinkers?

Since when did LeftinLowell become a comedy blog?

  5. Peter Says:

I don’t know, Mitt always came off as a self-serving/glad-handler type to me.

  6. Lynne Says:

LOL Peter, I was in NH at the time, and I thought, what the heck is Massachusetts thinking??? But he was good at politics, Mitt. It’s just that too much pandering starts to look like it after a while.

Mitt will be the 2012 or 2016 nominee. You’ll see. He was running for second place, and bowed out and “took one for the team” so that he could run next time and be the establishment fave.

  7. Robby Says:

Remember- McCain has already stated that he will not seek reelection in 2012 should he be elected this November. If he picks Romney as VP, that sets up Romney to run 4 years from now. Regardless of whether he’s VP or not, he’s most likely gonna give it another run. Im sure he’ll have some position in a McCain cabinet.

  8. Robby Says:

…and as for our current governor, does anyone have any information on how to start a recall Deval campaign?

  9. fred Says:

The proposal is three casinos in the State, did everone forget that?all that says is the casino’s will be within 60 miles of all residents, paychecks, welfare recipient’s,families… It’s overwhelming, if the state buys in to this, it puts a whole new spin on taxachusetts, and only the rich will get richer. So say good bye to blue collar municipalities and hello to the huge underlying issues of gambling on every street corner.

  10. Lynne Says:

Not only that, Fred, but also, it means that suddenly, other tribes can go for federal recognition and put in resort (Class III) casinos. Three?? There’s NO guarentee that it’ll remain at just that many.

I’m not interested in recall, I still think there are great things happening. Yes, this is a major disagreement I have with him, and I think he’s totally misguided, but it’s hardly the only proposal on the table.
