A Councilor Responds

by at 1:06 pm.

I’ve gotten a disturbing report of how one of our City Councilors responded to a constituent who expressed to them how upset they were with that councilor regarding their vote against the creation of a city cultural department. And let me tell you, it ain’t pretty.

To the credit of said councilor, they did respond, which is what you’d expect an elected official to do. However, the context of the response can only be described as heavily sarcastic, and almost vaguely threatening (in a political sense, not a dangerous one). The context of the response (which yes, I have seen personally) shows once again the abuse of completely irrelevant information to try and prove an unjustifiable point. It was disturbing to me to read how disconnected this Councilor is from the reality of the choice that was in front of them. Anything and everything is game for use as a justification as to why they voted against it, even if it’s completely off base.

It’s clear that on the cultural office proposal, most of the GOB-bers voted their personal loyalties rather than for what is good for the city. It’s as plain as day; supported by the fact that every other argument against the plan was poorly constructed and easily refuted when brought up in the meeting. The fact they were unwilling to listen to those explanations showed that they had made up their minds to be against the proposal before ever stepping foot into the public hearing or listening to the community. We all know the background, the players, who we’re talking about.

Once, I wrote a piece which I think was a turning point for this blog (I won’t take credit for any turning point in the city but it did coincide). It was the codification of my observations, and those of other people, about this city and how it operates. I still think that to the GOB, there is nothing wrong with how they conduct their business and politics. When you grow up inside a culture, it’s very difficult to see how that culture might be damaging to an open and engaging political process. Or how that exclusivity (government for and by your friends) is a slap in the face of everyone else. However, the biggest hope for this city is that some of them will learn from their mistakes of the past, and that new members of the community will bring a different perspective that can help put up a mirror to the status quo, and eventually even shift that culture.

The alternative is to be stuck in a destructive time warp that will end the progress we’ve so painfully achieved.

Soooooooo…… gonna print it and tell the rest of the class what’s going on??

  2. Lynne Says:

No, on behalf of the receiver mostly, but also because I wanted really to make the larger point that this sort of stuff is happening, and it’s shining a different light on the people who voted that way than they would like you to see. So the details are less relevant than the fact that it’s happening.

Who would blame them? As embarrassing as it is, Mr. Schor’s email (which yes, I have seen personally) demonstrates where the real divisiveness lies in this city. And who is being “raked through the coals”?

  4. K-R-S Says:

I was thinking the same thing PC! I read it expecting a big expose’ and then…

…what a tease. You have to start levelling the playing field here. These folks wouldn’t hesitate to leak something to the paper. You guys are playing by the Marquess of Queensbury rules and they are streetfighters. So instead of being so cryptic and vague, grab the bull by the ballz and heave-ho. This blog is the only answer to the slanted spin-style journalism that the voter gets in this town and you’re really doing us a disservice when you don’t name names. You’ve lost a little off your fastball lately. It’s almost as if you’ve been threatened and hopefully that’s not the case. Any half-assed lawyer could help you with your first amendment rights.

Lynne, if the councilor’s response was from a city email account then I believe it’s public record.

The fact that you’ve made referrence to it has already put the councilor on notice that the receiver has talked to you.

I for one would like to see what our esteemed city father had to say.

  7. Lynne Says:

I wanted to point out how thin a skin these folks have, as well as the fact they are using very poor arguments for why they voted the way they voted. It’s likely many people responded to all of the four councilors, and with the vindictive tone of that response, I didn’t want to get specific.

It wasn’t via email, ER, though I’d be interested to find out for sure if email sent via city email IS public record, just for my own edification in the future…

  8. K-R-S Says:

All email sent through city hall email channels is public record.

Too much to do to go on to long over ‘he said, she said’. The votes and the ways in which arguments were made speak for themselves and the point remains that city councilors can vote no if they want. Now the burden is on those of us who think the decision was incorrect to convince people in the city that the vote was incorrect and that if we want to keep services up and taxes down, improve the schools, succeed with the Hamilton Canal Project, fill the potholes, etc. there needs to be attention paid to just what the entire council intends to do when it comes to leading on economic development. Though on this particular vote the shortcomings were obvious to those of us who favored the consolidation of cultural planning, to me there is an overall lack of attention being paid across the board to several issues including foreclosures and their affect on neighborhoods, the continued loss of manufacturing jobs in the city like the recent closing of the furniture company, the relationship between increased crime and the economy, and the like. Name calling either way won’t help the city take on these very large structural problems. I’ve said it before and I will say it again there needs to be leadership from the city’s major employers and institutions and similar entities in the Merrimack River Valley to get on with the business of building a better economy before we all slip slide into a dark hole regardless of how we feel about art, music, theatre, and dance.

We lost our fast ball? I thought you were part of the team and were our ace pitcher. :-)

    Lynne:
You and I have had this discussion before how I have found that the majority of individuals who are involved in the arts are not politicized; I hope this wakes them up, mobilizes them and they get involved in the process.

I like posting here on Tuesday nights…it eliminates the “American Idols”. I look back upon the past year and feel that lately we’re seeing a kindler, gentler LiL and if you’re gonna make an omelette you’ll have to crack a couple of eggs.

I gotta say, PC is right

So “Left In Lowell” bows to the Sun and Rita? Then I will no longer particpate in “Left In Lowell” and I urge homeowners to leave the city.

    Nite

  14. Lynne Says:

Excuse me? Bows to who? Give me a break, guys.

Look, there’s battles and then there’s battles. I could have chosen not to post this at all.

Someone came to me with this information and they did not want to be named, or referenced in any way that would get back to them. Can you blame them? Given what we know about how politics in this city works?

If it were just about me (say, a response *I* got instead) you KNOW I would post it in full naming names. You all know better than that. In fact, keep reading, because I’m working on something now.
