It’s…Aliiiiiive!

by at 1:38 pm.

The African daisies I seeded last week in a tray are now sprouting! Soon to follow, I hope, are columbines and snapdragons and various veggies.

I know it’s just a tiny little triumph over winter, and not very exciting to anyone else. But I’m excited!

Go ahead and use this as an open thread to talk about spring, gardens, or whatever else while I throttle my computer for not working today.

I ordered my compost bin and rain barrel, as well as a large number of flowers and shrubs from this year’s Middlesex Conservation District Sale. I have a yard that is the size of a postage stamp, but I realy wanted to compost.

My herb seeds have sprouted and are almost ready to transfer into pots to await planting!

All in all, it’s beginning to feel a lot like spring!

Looking up from the consulting project I am in the middle of I looked out the window and noticed the ice on the pond is melting rapidly. This was followed by an Otter swimming by, a Heron swooping low over the waters looking for it first non frozen meal and then two Osprey’s cruising at a higher altitude which means we are on year three that the Osprey have returned to their nests in Ayer.

I was quite surprised to see a crocus in full bloom in my back yard over the weekend.

I never thought I’d say this when I was younger, but it’s so nice to be able to work in the yard again.

I love this time of year! The buds on the trees, flower garden potential, wood frogs, herons and ducks..Oh so lovely & perfectly peaceful!
On -b’s note, I am thankful for this time of year as my other half HAS to get out of the house and do his thing in the yard. He can only be inside so long before he starts to edge in on my areas, for lack of anything else to do.
The wood frogs came out in our vernal pool for the first time this Spring, last week, just before the last snow. A definate sign of sPRING!
Funny, just three weeks ago, the vernal pool was frozen enough for a 1/2 dozen deer to come around and congregate (on the ice). GREAT scenery!

We found a nice walk along the river near the center of Lowell this past weekend. From the nice landscaping behind the Tsongas arena we first went downriver as far as the Boott mills, seeing some interesting canal exits along the way. Then we turned upriver on the walkway under the Aiken Street bridge, past LeLacheur park and the UMASS dorms to the power plant just short of the University Ave bridge. The walkway is well done, but apparently not well used, at least not this early in Spring. We will be looking forward to the Concord River Greenway, especially during rafting season, and the walkways that should evolve with the Hamilton Canal District.

My tomato plants have already sprouted as well (heirloom tomato seeds.. 3-4 varieties).
I gotta transplant them to individual peat pots soon.
Not enough for a big garden, but enough seedlings to get the kitchen starting to smell like spring.
