Naming Names

by at 12:48 pm.

This week the Lowell City Council will take up a motion by CC Rodney Elliott. It asks that the “Manager develop policy for naming public facilities.” It is about time. Perhaps, this should have been addressed last year when the CC implemented a policy for naming City Squares as memorials to veterans.

At this rate, there is not going to be a building, a field, a road that does not carry the name of a recently retired City employee or elected official. There has to be a standard by which a name is introduced and eventually approved.

It is difficult for an elected official to say no when a name is brought forth. If I were them, I would probably always vote yes. It is not worth the political ill-will.

But with a sound and fair guideline, the politics are taking out of the process.

How about if we just name the building or park for the street it is on? That would make it easier for people to find it.

I agree with you Mimi. There needs to be some type of process put in place. Otherwise councilors are blindsided by other councilors with these naming motions. They don’t want to appear “against” anyone when in fact there may be someone far more deserving that is overlooked because they haven’t donated to someones campaign. They need to consider something similar to the square dedication process. Those dedications were out of control. Even the Veterans organizations weren’t attending because there were too many. It was used as a way for certain councilors to ingratiate themselves with pockets of voters. There needs to be some type of criteria developed. I don’t have an issue with naming a field after someone as long as they’ve been involved with the organization or the sport. Buildings and bridges are more general but should be named after someone who has done something memorable, something above and beyond. To just name it for your friend seems pretty self serving.

And to add insult to injury according to today’s Lowell Sun the Lowell Youth Soccer group itself is against this motion! They claim that Ed Walsh did nothing except his job related to supervising the construction of the field. He didn’t even spread the grass seed there!

  4. K-R-S Says:

Hey Paul, perhaps the powers that be at the company you work for can name their building after you….for doing your job? ;0)

  5. Mytquin Says:

Since the reign of lovely Rita and her knaves, the city has sprouted with corners, sidewalks even ‘circles’ named after people who she wants to ingratiate herself with. The problem with this is that with such a proliferation, these tributes become meaningless. The prestige is diluted. Nothing for nothing, and I’m not meaning to offend the guy, but I’ve never heard of anything Ed Early did connected to the Middlesex St. area. It can’t be much. Look at the plague this area has been on the city and mercantile interests. And we’re going to name a garage after him? People remember, these city employees and politicians were paid handsomely to do a job. If they cleaned up an area or got money for the city that was their JOB. That’s what we elected them to do. Why do so many people feel we have to dedicate buildings in their name. Enough is enough.

  6. Paul@01852 Says:

Do you suppose if I sweep my sidewalk *really* good that Rita will name the corner after me?

  7. K-R-S Says:

Paul, if you promise to shovel my driveway after every snowstorm, I’ll name my driveway after you..A nice plaque posted on a tall wooden stake will suffice for the “Paul01852 Memorial Driveway”.
We could start a trend. Afterall, in not too many years, we will have run out of places to apply namings.

All kidding aside, establishment of guidelines will be extremely helpful and will be less subjective for CC’s in the future.

Personally, I felt that the soccer field should have been named for the Lowell Youth Soccer Association (they do the lion share of the work).

Those on the cc that want to limit the namings seem to be hypocrites. I have been to the namings of some of the parks and fields and they are all their shaking hands with the residents. If one of them misses the naming another cc announces what important reason they had for not being there. If they disapprove of all the namings then why do they always show up? They should let Ed Bellegarde name the fields etc. He certainly is familiar with who has done the work to deserve the plaque.
