Yesterday’s Lowell Column carried disappointing news for some of us who live in Ward 10 (South Lowell, Ayer’s City), former Lowell City Councilor and Mayor Eileen Donoghue has decided not to challenge our current State Representative, David Nangle, this fall.
Eileen’s name was mentioned earlier this year when it looked like Nangle would accept a job as Sergeant at Arms of the Massachusetts Legislature. Recently she joined the law firm of Gallagher & Cavanaugh and according to the Column, “she wants to settle in before trying her hand at another run for public office.”
The Column states that a “Nangle-Donoghue election would have been a bruising affair.” True, true but some political battles are worth fighting. But who are the “many political insiders” who told the Sun that Eileen’s chances of beating Nangle were “slim.”
Who are these “political insider?” What are their credentials? Do you need to start out as an “insider” then you move into the political realm? Or do you start out as a “political outsider” then move into the inner circle? Since I believed that Eileen would win big if she chose to run, I guess I would never make the cut.
As for Eileen’s future, I think by the summer of 2009 she should be ready to return to public service. She can always come back home to the City Council or maybe the School Committee.

I have no preference here, but you underestimate Nangle’s roots in South Lowell and the Lower Highlands. Yes, Donoghue would do well in Belvidere, but I doubt it would be enough to win. Also, the sheer fact that he is the incumbant is enough to make anyone think twice.
I’m curious as to why you think she would win. Is it just based on her strong showing in the MA-05 race?

Actually Moolight is probably on the right track about the “political insiders”…Campy, Cox, Nangle, Golden, McMahon…the usual suspects.
You see how well they did delivering for Tsongas in Lowell, Eileen beat her easily so I think they sighed a big breath of relief then tried to spin it that Eileen didn’t have a chance.

I also really like Eileen, but you cannlot discount Nangle’s family ties: Leahys, Lenzi.

Josh:
I do not think Nangle’s district covers the lower Highlands. As for his roots in South Lowell, yes, he does have a strong following among the residents who have been there for decades. But if he was challenged, would that attract a lot of people to the polls who usually stay home because they do not have a choice?
Yes, part of the reason why I think Eileen would do well is her strong showing in the MA-05 race but more important, my neighbors and I who are resident of the 17th Middlesex District want a rep who is responsive, not someone who does not answer your e-mails because he does not like your comments and/or questions.

“”I wish I got 100 percent on all of my tests in school,” said Rep. David Nangle, D-Lowell, who received a perfect score from the environmental group, which rated legislators on their positions on clean energy and open-space conservation.”
A thank you to Dave from the South Lowell residents. He has once again come out to support us against the Power Plant. He gets my vote on the environment.

Nangle hasn’t had to actually run for office for how long, now? Eileen on the other hand just waged a larger, and pretty successful, campaign. I dunno, I think the math might be in her favor.

Oh, and the power plant, so far as I know, is the only issue on which I’ve agreed with Nangle since I moved to Lowell!
So yes, kudos on him for bring against the power plant, but on other stuff, I’d love to see him need to justify his stances against an actual opponent now and again.

Eileen Donoghue is one of the hardest-working, most responsible, toughest leaders I’ve ever had the opportunity to vote for. Watching the City Council meetings, it took about 10 minutes to realize that she was an extraordinary public servant.
I hope she gets back into government, because we could really use someone of her caliber.

Nangle was a Tom Finneran loyalist, and a bitter-ender in the fight to bring back marriage discrimination.

And now he’s Sal Dimasi’s butler, what was that quote recently over the casino gambling bill, something along the lines of Dimasi doesn’t want it so how do you think I’ll be voting? Ditto the dollar a pack cigarette tax hike.
His loyalty is to the man who keeps him in leadership, not to the people who put him there!
