Glad I Live South of the Merrimack

by at 8:47 am.

The Sun reports that three of Lowell’s bridges are going to be worked on at the same time.

I am SO glad I moved down from that part of town several years ago. Yeesh!

The University Avenue bridge will likely have to be shut down to traffic entirely starting sometime later this summer …

Meanwhile, Woods said construction is expected to begin this fall on the state-funded, $10 million overhaul of the Hunts Falls bridge, which carries Route 38 over the Merrimack, connecting the Belvidere and Centralville sections of Lowell.

She said the $3.7 million repair of the Rourke Bridge, which runs from Middlesex Street to Pawtucket Boulevard, connecting the Highlands and Pawtucketville sections of the city, will begin later this summer and involve the closure of the bridge at night, between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Oy. It’s all necessary (many say way overdue!) but I feel for all you folks in Pawtucketville and Centralville and such. Crossing the river is a pain even at the best of times.

I still can’t believe that they are going to perform a SECOND band-aid repair of the University Ave bridge, knowing that it’s going to be torn down and replaced. What a waste.

  2. Lynne Says:

It’s either that, or shut it down completely waiting for it to get its turn in the list of bridges to be replaced.

When infrastructure gets that old and neglected, as ours has in this state, sometimes it’s the only option left. Yeah, it does seem a waste. The alternative is even worse. :)

  3. waittilnextyr Says:

Where they are putting that money into the University Ave bridge, it may be a reflection of just how risky that bridge has become. And it is 3 or 4 years before the replacement will be on-line.

  4. Anonymous Says:

I plan to open up a riverboat service from the end of Bridge Street across to the back of the Boott Mill complext and charge folks $3.50 each way!

  5. joe Says:

That’s OK, everyone can just take Bridge Street.

    …what?

  6. Lynne Says:

    LMAO

  7. Paul@01852 Says:

Poor Kristen! (And don’t forget us poor slobs who *live* on the right side of the river but *WORK* on the wrong side!!)

  8. K-R-S Says:

This will be a “thrilling” experience. Grab an ice tea, a good CD and I’m good to wait. Living only 5 minutes from work, don’t have much time to decompress before reaching home. Now I’ll have plenty! ;0)

  9. Eleanor Rigby Says:

I can’t wait to submit my living expenses to the city because I won’t be able to get to my job on the other side of the river….oh wait, I’m not a cop on ‘disablity’…dam

Speaking of bridges…anyone have any insight into why anyone is spending millions rehabing Lowell’s “temporary” bridge instead of actually designing and building a permanent one? People in Tyngsboro complain about the delay in the rebuild of the Tyngsboro bridge, they should travel downstream a little and look at the dates on Lowell’s “temporary” bridge. Isn’t it still owned by the Army Corps?

  10. kpem Says:

The traffic is just so much better starting the first day school ends. Couldn’t they time this stuff better? I count down until school is out year after year. I am glad to hear the Rourke bridge will be done in the evening. Does anyone know if the Hunts Falls Bridge will be closed completely during construction or repaired in the PM? I also wonder if there will ever be a traffic light at the end of Fletcher Street?

  11. -b Says:

    Glad I work off hours.

The University Ave Bridge is under design and atleast we will not lose another bridge during construction.

    Project 601845
Project Description: LOWELL- BRIDGE REPLACEMENT, L-15-021, UNIVERSITY (TEXTILE) AVENUE OVER THE MERRIMACK RIVER AND NORTHERN CANAL
The existing University Avenue Bridge will be completely demolished and replaced with a new bridge approximately 200 feet to the west. The new bridge alignment provides a greater degree of mobility and congestion mitigation by providing a straighter alignment between Merrimack Street on the south and University Avenue to the north. The existing bridge will remain in service during construction of the new bridge.
