This has been sort of fun to watch!
First, the list of known candidates (disclaimer: might not be totally accurate or comprehensive).
I’ve gotten messages from Maria Sheehy, Asst City Solicitor for Lowell and Bob Colt, longtime Democratic activist from Winchester that each of them intends to be a candidate.
My local paper also mentioned a candidate named John Panica of Newton, but I don’t know anything about him.
By my count that’s at least six:
Sheehy
Colt
Panica
Concannon
O’Donovan
Pablo of BMG
Pablo (not sure yet if he has declared or announced his real name to the world, but he’s a prolific progressive writer at BMG) posted his interest and enumerated why he thinks he can do some good in the position. Bob Colt has posted a comment in the BMG Registrar of Probate open thread about his qualifications. I’m sure that some people can chime in here about Lowell Assistant Solicitor Maria Sheehy (I won’t, as I don’t know her).
So, start threading the 2008 Middlesex Democratic Registrar of Probate Convention news!

Whe I arrived home today I already had a USPS-delivered advertisement for Sean O’Donovan who apparently is a Somerville Alderman and Attorney. I definitely like Amberpaw’s ideas posted on BMG — Don’t commit “’til you see the whites of their eyes!” I plan to follow her lead an NOT vote for anyone who does not come “front and center” at that caucus!

This of course assumes that Buonomo notifies the Sec of State that he is withdrawing his name by Sept 22. So far he has not made that notification!

Too bad Buckles Nolan isn’t still around to add to that field.

I would certainly vote for Elias Nugator. Runs a great blog.

First, to qualify what comes further down, I fully expect to have a vote at the caucus to take place in Waltham next week.
In order to claim my vote I will first be looking for *management* experience. The Register must *manage* an office staff and schedules for wills, child custody and divorce, and family court matters. I will be looking for court management experience especially since the courts of this state (and country) seem to operate on different rulles than standard businesses.
Second, I will be looking for experience with innovation, particularly information technology experience. The court system is woefully behind the times when it comes to utilization of computer resources and data management. For good examples of what I am looking for refer to the Northern Middlesex Registry of Deeds blog where scanning of archive documents and scan-and-immediate-return of filings to customers has been extensively discussed.
Thirdly, I will be looking for building management experience. Has anyone been in the public men’s room at Lowell District Court? ‘Nuff sed!
Finally I will be looking at integrity and experience. We certainly do NOT need another scandal in the Registry after the Buonnomo videotapes! I also (as AmberPaw said on Blue Mass Group) want to “see the whites of their eyes.” I want them “front and center” to answer questions and explain why *they* are the best candidate to *manage* the Registry of Deeds.
I’d be interested in any other issues and concerns that I should be aware of in choosing a replacemnt candidate. Please feel free to write your thoughts and comments here and I will monitor them. Thanks.

I think you meant Registrar of Probate there, but it’s understandable. We want to hold the Probate office to the same standards we see from the North Middlesex Registrar of Deeds office - and those are very high standards indeed!

WBUR reported yesterday that the Sec of State says Buonomo withdrew his name as the nominee.
