Two items on fellow blogs of note: First, apparently that work will get done on the Rourke Bridge:
The Mass Highway work to the bridge deck and top support systems announced earlier this year, will be commencing this week.
All work will be done between the hours of 8pm and 4am.
For the next seven nights, ‘spot’ work will be done on bridge joints, and motorists can expect minor delays.
After October 21st, the deck/surface work will begin, which will necessitate bridge closure from 8pm to 4am Sunday through Thursday. Traffic will be detoured to the O’Donnell/School Street Bridge during this time.
All work is projected to be complete in 60 days.
Luckily for me, most of my life/work/play is south of the river. With the University Ave bridge closed and the Rourke delays at night, you couldn’t pay me to cross the river. OK, you could pay me, but it’ll cost ya. (Unluckily for me, they’ve really been ramping up the sewer/drainage work down the street from me. Fun!)
Also, if you are interested in knowing more about what’s happening with the schools these days, there’s a town hall style meeting with superintendent Dr. Chris Scott, Monday, October 20, 7:00 to 9:00 pm. It will also be broadcast live on Channel 22 for those with cable. See above link for details!

As a person who lives in Pawtuckeville it’s just awful. The Bay state marathon is Sunday and the Rourke bridge will be closed from early in the morning until 1:30 in the afternoon. I can’t believe that the city has allowed this to happen with the University ave bridge closed as well. We’re basically trapped on our side of the river for most of Sunday with two bridges down. If you’ve ever been over that side of teh river when they run this roadrace you know what I mean. It’s complete and utter gridlock. It took me 45 minutes last year to get to the Highlands. And that was with the University ave bridge open. They should be made to find a new route for that road race. It’s very very frustrating. There was road work being done on the Highlands side of the Rourke bridge this morning and yesterday morning. They closed the right turn lane on to Middlesex street. I couldn’t believe it. With the University ave bridge down you would think someone would put on their common sense hat and tell the construction crew they couldn’t start until rush hour was over. It took me 20 minutes to get across the bridge from my home yesterday. A lot of the problem is the University bridge being done but some of it is just poor planning. Yeeeesshhh!!

Well, someone IS thinking about the traffic, as the work on the Rourke, as quoted, will start at 8pm and last until 4am. NOT during peak traffic times. During the night into early morning. If you’re traveling at 3am the traffic isn’t that bad even if you’re being forced over to the School St bridge.
Secondly, the city has some but little say in state road projects like this, so far as I know. A lot of it is state-run. Though, honestly, NONE of this work can be put off. The Roarke was supposed to be a 10 year temporary bridge as I recall, and that was like 20 years ago! It should be taken down and replaced as far as I’m concerned. That bridge is narrow and scary. (Though I DO like the seperate pedestrian walkway.)
The same with the University Ave bridge. It really needs this work or else the thing will have to be shut down for however many years as it’ll take to get its replacement up. (I still think the realignment is going to suck, and I’ll be sad to see the historic building go.)
Anyway, I used to live in Dracut and even back when there was NO work on the bridges, it sucked to get across, so there’s no easy solution. As to the road race, at least it’s just once a year, and I don’t know about changing its course but I imagine there’s some momentum in keeping it the same, it’s not likely to change.
