Today, while sitting in my hotel half way around the world, I read the Sun on-line. What is happening? I cannot believe the City Council is going to reconsider the sewer rates. This is after a 2 1/2 sub-committe meeting and a 2 hour discusssion in a City Council meeting. What is left to be said?
Yes, no one likes to pay higher taxes; yes, these are difficult economic times but the City of Lowell needs to put some money into its crumbling infrastructure. There is never going to be a good time to borrow money. If the City Council thinks that in the next few months the economy is going to turn around, they are not reading the tea leaves properly.
I am dumfounded that they are going to review this motion that passed unanimously. If the “yes” vote from those who oppose the rate increase was a tactical move to bring the issue up again, please save us from the theatrics.
We deserve better from our government. If you really are against it, do not vote for it. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot be concerned about the plight of the Pawtucketville and Centraville (flood) and Belvedere (odor) and then not be willing to fund the waste water treatment renovation.
And if all these maneuvers are really about something else, let’s say confronting the City Manager for example, you will not get away with it. At the end you will be exposed.

I think it is pretty obvious that the “reconsideration” is only about Councilors Kazanjian, Elliot, Caulfield, and the Merciers trying to score some political points.
I am as anti-tax as anyone, but the city really has no other option here. Imagine the nightmare that would ensue if the treatment plant did fail, and had to be shut down to be repaired. It would be even more expensive, result in sewage spewing into the Merrimack every time it rained, and make life for those living downwind a living hell.
Elliot usually has more common sense than this, maybe sitting next to Kazanjian is rubbing off on him. The rest of those idiots deserve to be voted out, and not just for this grandstanding

Hope your trip is great!

Is this the same armnad mercier who is flipping over on the
water rates, against the CM, who put his grand-son from DRACUT
to work at the water plant, thats gratitude for ya!!!
this is only designed to embrass the CM, shame on elliott and armand for this political move.

Heroics (for the taxpayer)..or Hijinks (for the pols)? You decide.
WOW, I really do hope there is change around the corner for our CC. This was a public meeting, I would have preferred it be kept in the dark. Really, no one should have had to see that display put on by the majority of our CC.

When will Bernie ever stop getting bashed and start getting all the credit he has due. The city has no other choice and this needs to be done now not later. Time to stop the propaganda aimed at the tax sensitive, cash strapped citizens. Lets get elected on merit not deception.
“Elliot usually has more common sense than this” I agree totally

Eliminate deception? This is Lowell!!
Seriously, the City Council(excepting Martin, Milinazzo and Broderick)have not looked real good on this sewer issue. Rita Mercier and Lenzi have looked better than expected and Eliott has looked very bad. Can’t remember the prior CM giving the abundance of information that we’re getting now yet he also was never put through the wringer like we’ve seen with this administration. Kazanjian clearly has an agenda.

A valuable lesson Bernie learned from this (one hopes) is that when you bring something before the CC that demands attention and needs to be funded, then both approval and funding be presented at the same time.
That way the grandstanders who will try to use the “I fought to keep your rates and taxes down” line during the re-election campaign will be forced to deal with it, or reject projects.
So, are the “progressives” gathering a slate of candidates for the coming season or are we going to be faced with the same old same old?

God Eleanor, we’re not even through this campaign season, and you’re already demanding organization for next year??
But I take your point.

I’m glad to see that they voted 9-0 to institute the fee increases. I don’t want my fees to increase any more than the next guy. But I do want my elected officials to review it. The work really needs to be done. The CSO project was $65M of the 100M in project costs. Of the remaining $35M most of it was long overdue neglect of Duck island. I think I read that $10M was for the levy and pump in Centerville. If it helps the people in Centerville I’m willing to pay for it. But I have no problem with making sure its going to help BEFORE we spend all kinds of money and find out it doesn’t. If it doesn’t work we’d all be questioning why we spent the money without making sure it would do what its supposed to do. I really have no problem with reviewing something again to be sure we’re making the right choices. Due diligence is important. If no one had fought to have the arena reveiwed way back when we’d have an even bigger white elephant on our hands right now. After review they all voted in favor of it so I’m comfortable that they’ve looked at all possible alternatives. I really feel it was just Kazanjian that felt this was a conspiracy by the Manager. What he could possibly think the Manager was getting out of this is beyond me. This is not a luxury item like the arena. Functioning water and wastewater facilites are a basic human need.
