State Senator Dianne Wilkerson has had a long troubling run of ethics problems while in office. These have been very well documented in many places, not the least of which include the Globe and the Herald.
She narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Sonia Chang-Diaz, but proclaimed herself moving forward with a sticker campaign to keep her seat. She will, of course, not appear on the ballot, an uphill battle no matter what. Now, she’s facing potentially another couple of explosive ethics and tax problems, says the Boston Phoenix. (Via BMG.)
As the only African-American state Senator, and a supposed progressive (though some have questioned this too), it’s unfortunate that Wilkerson has destroyed herself this way. An accidental mistake or two might be forgiven, but her pattern of behavior showcases an attitude of entitlement and rules-don’t-apply-to-me. Her progressive record and minority status does not mean she deserves to be in the Senate.
More and better Democrats, the motto of much of the progressive blogosphere. It’s gratifying that the better Democrat, Chang-Diaz, won the Democratic nomination. Let’s hope we can put the ethics-challenged Wilkerson behind us and get some better governance for Second Suffolk.

Quite frankly, Wilkerson is an embarassment. I’m thrilled to peices she is gone. Her constituency SO desreve much better representation. Wilkerson’s tenure has been about serving herself, not the folks that actually elected her.

We have no idea regarding the accuracy of the information published in the Phoenix. We do know that anything regarding Wilkerson is hot press and people tend to read it. I can understand if everything that has been written had been true, but it’s not. The information is extraordinarily biased against her and in most cases totally misleading. It’s completely unfair, but this is the price of free speech. What is said does not have to be accurate, fair, or impartial. Likewise, the first one to the media wins in the eyes of many. The first story in the media is true. It’s sad.

OK, so give me actual facts that are in dispute. Put up or shut up.

I’m sorry, do we get to vote for or against Dianne Wilkerson here in Lowell?
Wilkerson has issues. Chang-Diaz and Wilkerson are nearly identical in what they believe. So it comes down to the voters of JP, Roxbury and the South End.
Do we in Lowell not have enough on our plate that we are concerned about a race we have NO SAY IN?

ER, you’re right we have no say in her being elected.
However, a small number of politicans display such egregious behaviors and these behaviors reflect poorly and everyone gets painted with a broad brush. Just my thought on the issues.

ER: it’s state news. This blog isn’t just about Lowell, though it mostly is. I’m interested in politics statewide.
Also, people in Lowell just may have relatives and friends in the district. *shrug*

Not to belabor the issue, but the Boston media is doing a Boston story. It’s about a Boston Senate seat. So when the Boston media does a story it makes it a statewide story? No.
It just points to the lack of media in local communities.
With all respect there are other issues that do impact us locally that we could be spending time on.

You’re more than welcome to start your own blog. *shrug*
THIS blog is about whatever interests me. It took all of, what, ten minutes to post this piece? All I was doing was quoting an existing article elsewhere.
If I can’t take ten minutes on my own blog to talk about something I’m interested in, that seems a bit weird. Why else do I blog?
There are plenty of local threads, I don’t understand exactly the objection is here. Damn, I posted like 8 things yesterday.

All, the stories in the paper are half true and some are not factual at all. They make allegations that are not true. They print stories about Wilkerson that lead the readers to believe negative things but never actually state facts. The Senator has had financial challenges but nothing that would warrant labeling her a criminal. Those stories are false and unfair.

Lynne, ultimately you are right, this is your blog and you can do with it what you please.
My advice is that if you ever want this blog to actually be a factor in the local political scene you should be more focused on local issues that either are not getting coverage in the local rag, or inadequately covered.
Do that and this blog will be a force, continue with the hodge podge of postings on everything from A to Z and it will be a fun little place to visit now and again, but that’s it.
