Yesterday or today, my husband and I had the morning news on while getting ready for work, and that Ashley Todd I-got-beat-up-cuz-I-was-a-McCain-supporter story was on. The woman also claimed that a “B” was carved into her cheek with a knife by the attacker.
I happened to pass by the TV when they showed the photo of the girl, which showed the “B” but…backwards. Instantly I said to my husband, this story is FAKE, she did that in the mirror, and was stupid enough to do it frontwards to her mirror image. He was more circumspect, admitting it was possible but that we just didn’t know at the time. Meanwhile, Fixed Noise and the wingnuttery types got their victim on. It smelled to me like a way to counter the “Obama supporters and reporters attacked by McCain supporters at rallies” stories but whatever.
Turns out, I was completely, in all respects, 100% correct. Score one for me!

It’s one of the most embarrassing stories for McCain all campaign… which is saying a lot. They’d have been OK on it, if not for the fact that not only were they the ones pushing the story, but they actually made shit up along the way too.

This sounds like it could have been an Al Sharpton production.

One of the things I remember from the Tawana Brawley case was that in cases where the victim is written on, it usually turns out to be a hoax, unless the victim is dead. It’s an obvious attempt to direct the story of the victim in such a way that a criminal would almost never do.

Man, the McCain supporters are going all emo now.
Not only would Barack Obama’s health care plan make it easier for the young lady to get insurance, but it would mandate parity for mental health treatment.

This is an embarrassment for the country.
This just as easily could have been a story of an Obama supporter getting beaten up.
I will be so glad when this election is over.

Emo. LMAO.
Yeah, -b, but the reports of McCain supporters doing things like slashing tired, kicking reporters, etc, are all proven to actually be true.

Indeed, Lynne. The McCain campaign opened a huge can of worms in calling Obama a terrorist and it’s a genie that can’t be put back in the bottle. They’ve a violent, angry lot. It’s pretty hard to try to blame both campaigns on a violent and angry campaign when so much evidence exists showing that the violence, threats and anger is coming from one side. The sooner this election is over, the better. I only hope that the divisions that McCain and Palin opened can be calmed in the preceding months.

Why has this story not made national headlines? There are lunatics from both sides of the aisle. John McCain and Barack Obama do not believe in this type of violence. Why pin it on a campaign?
This type of violence exists on both sides-your a fool and a tool if you think its only happening to Obama supporters.

Why has this story not made national headlines?
Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that, unlike the Cut Nut story in Pittsburgh, there isn’t a presidential campaign working to flack the story to the press.
Lone nut stories are generally not worth the press’s time. What’s notable was the way the McCain campaign was able to get the media, especially Fox and the conservative blogs, to flog this story. You know, the one about the big black man sexually assaulting a young white woman.
You know, one thing you can say about the Bush campaigns - they didn’t to Southern Strategy stuff.

Then again, perhaps “two hotheads get into it about politics in a diner” isn’t quite as sensational a story as what was alleged to happen in Pittsburgh.

Joe: RE the southern strategy stuff…you forget the “McCain has an illegitimate black child” push polling they used in South Carolina to defeat him in 2000…so they all go there eventually.
This is why the modern Republican party needs to go back to the drawing board and look to the mote in their own eye.

Lynne, you’re right.
I was thinking about the campaigns Bush ran against the Democrats.
There was none of that stuff, where it had been a mainstay of the GOP strategy for thirty years before that.
