Reading around the blogosphere, I came across this short post by Susan at Below Boston, suggesting that whatever gifts you buy, you buy locally. It’s an idea I’ve always promoted here, and there’s plenty of places to do so in and around Lowell - whether at the Brush Art gallery (plenty of arts and crafts gifts there) or at the extended holiday Open Studios at Western Ave (12-5pm December 6th and 7th, 13th and 14th) or other fine, locally-owned establishments like Humanity or Welles Emporium, or the new C’est wine and gift shop on Merrimack.
Here’s an open thread to list your favorite place to shop locally for Christmas gifts. Also, does anyone have good suggestions for “shopping locally” for a 1 1/2 and a 4 1/2 year old? I would rather not buy them junk from China, either, if I can help it, though it may come to that.

Many schools and churches have great craft fairs, and gift certificates to local play spaces are helpful. Gift cards to local businesses or amusements keep the travel light and stimulate local economies. You can give money for them to order books through their preschools, or make a donation in their name. Love Trader Joe’s - make a gift basket. Nothing to dust or hang on the wall!

For the little ones, I’ve had some luck over the years with the museum gift shops. (Also good for the craftier members of the family)
I believe there’s still a toy store on Middle St. but I’ve never actually been in it.

The toy store on Middle St is Rogers Toy. When I was little, my parents used to go there to find the outlandish toys I’d make up in my head apparently. I went in last year myself for the first time to buy myself a Christmas present (they have a good selection of board games), and this year, I think I’m going to buy something for Toys for Tots there instead.

Boott Mill Museum shop has some great kids toys and books. There is also a children’s apparell shop that just opened on the corner of Merrimack & Prescott St., nice stuff.

Is Haus Kids closed? If not that’s a great, if a bit pricey, place for kids toys. Rogers Toy (and Pool) had a decent selection, but smells strongly of chlorine…don’t take too long browsing.
University Music is a decent little music shop. I’ll be shopping there for myself this christmas. There’s a sports store on bridge street I think, and how about gift certificates to local restaurants?
