180 Day Starts Stimulus List and Hamilton Canal

by at 3:54 pm.

It looks like Lowell’s Hamilton Canal (a state-designated Growth District) is on the 180-Day shovel-ready project list for Massachusetts; specifically, $25M for “supplement state investment in proposed street and bridge improvements” according to this list (page four, linked to from this comment on Blue Mass by Eric Bourassa of MASSPIRG). Hat tip to Mr. Lynne for finding it.

This is a good sign for Lowell (if it comes through) and hopefully puts Hamilton on the right track despite the downturn, and creating some local jobs besides.

does the phrase “shovel ready project list” have to do with the impending Obama trillion dollar investment?

  2. K-R-S Says:

My 2 cents..does this mean that municipalities & states will have the option to break away from prevailing wage? Thereby, completing the job (the same job), utilizing less money? Based on our state’s history, I had to ask…

  3. K-R-S Says:

To Add to the Above Comment…as for $25M for MA, I can see that cash taken up on Menino’s Christmas List in a heartbeat.
    This does not look promising…

The Hamilton Canal District is not only “shovel ready”, but also the federal investment will both create the temporary jobs for infrastructure and facilitate private investment/permament jobs as the district is developed. This is a “no brainer” for the Obama stimulus plan.

Lots of good projects on that which I read.

Lots of money going toward energy efficiency, which I loved. That’s the double benefit people like Krugman were talking about - not only are you getting the stimulus from building it, but they’ll save our institutions tens of millions over the next few years… leaving money to be spent elsewhere.

Lots of great waterfront projects all over the state, money spent in downtown areas… In fact, I’m impressed by the fact that the money is very well distributed. I’ll have to spend more time analyzing it over the next few days, posting some blogs at Ryan’s Take.

  6. Lynne Says:

KRS - the list is for a few billion, the Hamilton Canal portion is listed for $25M. $25M is hardly a big enough stimulus for a whole state like MA.

This is the state’s big statewide “shovel-ready” list - it has green projects, infrastructure investments (roads, bridges, sewer/water, public transit, etc) as well as upgrades to schools, universities, economic development projects, what have you.

It’s a loooong list, and I do not know what criteria will be involved for picking and choosing which projects get funded first if the Obama stimulus package for MA is less than the total cost for all these projects. I think this is something more of a wish list and a showcase of what is ready to go in MA for use at the federal level.

  7. Lynne Says:

Oh and Daniel, I should have said so in the post, but yes, it’s related to the list Obama asked for from Governors about projects in states that could go forward immediately if funded by a stimulus bill.
