Most City Council motions are made by one individual; on occasion two City Councilors submit a motion together. In all of my years watching Lowell City Council activities I have never seen what is on this week’s agenda: a motion submitted not by two, not by three, not by four but by five, yes five City Council. Check out this week City Council agenda:
Agenda item # 21: “C. Kazanjian, C. A. Mericer, C. Elliott, C. Lenzi, M. Caulfield-Req. Mgr. continue discussion U Mass Lowell & State Officials re: Control of Tsongas Arena.” .
We got it; they really want Bernie to talk to the State Delegation and Marty. I guess if any prior discussion took place, they could have done this by playing a CC version of the old telephone game we used to play when we were kids. I am sure that no one broke open meeting laws.

I’m not so sure that the open meeting law was not violated.

So, Anonymous, cough up some specific details…

How could this not be a violation? Are we to believe this just “happened”. How? The all signed on to it. That clearly shows there was some discussion by the five. They don’t all have to be in a room or on a conference call to violate the law. A “chain mail” effort where one calls another who calls another and so on and so on is a vilation of the law. Guess backroom politics is alive and well in the Mill City. And we thought those days were gone….right! And I wonder if the sleazy Chancellor was involved too?
On a related note: am I the only one that is mostly disappointed by Rodney Elliott? Perhaps he should be target #1 come election time.

Elmer: you’re not the only one but he wants to be mayor so bad he can taste it.

I think it’s time that at the very least the State Ethics Commission was brought into play here. Beyond that? I would submit that if a majority of the CC has filed the same motion, to force the CMs hand then perhaps the FBI needs to look in the direction of the CC chamber as well.

Aside from the open meetings issue when will these poor councilors get it? He’s (Meehan) just not that into you! Give it up. It’s getting pathetic.

Pathetic it is, but I’m not so sure Meehan isn’t into it. What’s amazing is how he’s playing the fools into giving the store away. It really raises the question of who they are really representing. I don’t think he should get the arena for nothing and I don’t think he should get the land next to it at all.

Am I naive to think that each member had his/her own motion and they were combined into one? Could happen.

Alright, Let’s talk turkey….
These are just some of the items we have on our horizon:
1.) fully fund the Healthcare Trust Funded for the City of Lowell by 2010
2.) fully fund our pension (city) by 2025
3.) A failing national economy that will hit every city and town REALLY hard.
4.) Cuts, understandably
5.) lay offs, lay offs, lay offs.
6.) General (pardon my francais) “suckiness”
In an environment, where our financial base determines our success, the majority of this CC is determined to turn this City on its’ heels, and push us further down. You may as well change our name to Lawrence.
I am not pleased by this ongoing, disgusting, political display. Our CC’s were elected to do a job. Educate yourselves, ask questions and make decisions that effect the good of everyone that lives in this city, not as they effect you personally.
And YET…these &%^$# get wrapped up in arena ventures where they are more than willing to give up the farm…HMMM…wouldn’t be any differant on the numerous real estate projects, sales and inside deals that they and their budddies have been getting away with for decades…where they’ve sold the cow and the farm and then sold it back to themselves and to others, for a great profit.
Enough!
E-Rigby, I don’t agree w/ it, but at least the legislative raise was somewhat out in the open (the public was dumb enough to vote on it). The REAL crime is the crap that goes on every single day on the local level w/ NO repercussions.
By the way, as a “constituent” and activist, I care a great deal about great communication from my government. I can’t say that the majority of our CC has been all that responsive, regardless of the fact that I pay my taxes and don’t wind up in the dead beat tax logs like many of “their” friends. BY the way, I get faster response from the Guv’s office, our State Reps, State Senator and Congresswoman. How sad, that constituent communication is only important to elected officials outside of the City of Lowell.

Each time I read about the Celtics recent draft choices playing minor league basketball in Utah, I think there may be an opportunity to expand the use of the arena with an agreement with them. Basketball will attract more people in this area than does hockey, but they could well complement each other in the use of the arena.
The land next to the arena should be considered prime property once it could be cleared of contamination, which may be another task to be taken on with the federal stimulus money. I would not be in favor of taking that off the tax rolls, especially for a use such as an ice hockey practice facility. If one is needed, the Janas arena should be available, as I expect that is another under-utilized State facility.
I have also been disappointed with Rodney Elliott in the past months, as it seems that he may be putting his own ambitions above those of the citizens of Lowell.

2. Ordinance-Ch. 104 New Article IV, Pit Bull Regulations.
This one is going to be a doozy. They mayor using his bully pulpit to tell the Director of the Humane Society and the Rep. from the MSPCA what killing Machines Pitbulls are. Pretending to listen as if his mind isn’t already made up and then making a face like someone took a #2 in his morning bowl of corn flakes when they make a point that he disagrees with regarding the matter.
