Polls Show Public Support for Stimulus, Obama (Updated)

by at 12:59 pm.

One of the memes being touted (in comments on this blog and elsewhere) is that the public is turning against the spending stimulus as outlined by the winners of last November’s election, ie, Obama and the Democrats.

This dkos diary outlines, in depth, a Gallup poll showing both of these ideas as blatantly false.

Sorry, guys. But please, by all means, after we saw a devastating 598,000 jobs lost last month, keep on obstructing the stimulus bill and insisting on promoting your obviously failed concepts of how to deal with this crisis. 2010 is right around the corner. Oh, and we’ll probably pick up Kansas at a minimum, if Sebelius runs.

Update: the new Research 2000 poll shows everyone lost popularity this week. Yup. That includes our little stuntmaster Boehner, who goes a net -8 on his fav/unfav.

And take a look at these:

FAVORABLE UNFAVORABLE NET CHANGE
CONGRESSIONAL DEMS: 38 (40) 55 (52) -5
CONGRESSIONAL GOPS: 21 (24) 68 (66) -5
DEMOCRATIC PARTY: 54 (56) 37 (36) -3
REPUBLICAN PARTY: 32 (33) 60 (58) -3

Yup, we’re really losing that battle to the Republicans, aren’t we?

And before anyone complains this is a liberal Daily Kos poll, this poll company they engage is very reputable and proven.

The National Republican Party is heading for the same fate as the MA Republicans.

    Please dear god please.

I have no problem with conservatives being part of the debate. I have a problem with the idea that all debates are equal on all sides. Some sides are more equal than others on the merit and on the facts and on the results.

Did you see that speech Obama gave to the House Democratic Caucus Thursday night?

I wouldn’t want to be a Republican for the next eight years.

  4. waittilnextyr Says:

What the Republicans fear most is that they will become irrelevant, as the power will be gone. And that power is needed to preserve the way of life for many corporations and the elite class.

A big threat to those people is the unspoken need for tax increases to improve the balance of the economy and to re-pay the debts of recent years and the current TARP and Economic Recovery programs. The so-called Social Security Trust Fund now has about $2.2T of Government IOUs, with much of that borrowing used to fuel the tax cuts those people enjoyed over the past few years, and the rest to pay for the Biggest Mistake. The total Federal Government debt exceeds $10.7T, and some of those debts will be recalled. Certainly as the SS annual surplus reduces there will be less additional money to “borrow” from that account, and when SS goes into the “red” it will have to draw from that “Trust Fund”. Where will that money come from? And the other $8.5T (and increasing) debt could be on the re-call block at any time. Where will that money come from? These are real concerns for all of us, but more so for those with the ability to pay.

That’s why they want the money now.

I just hope some of these people raising cain about budget deficits during the debate about the stimulus will remember that principle the next time the economy is running great guns, the government is turning a budget surplus, and the national debt is 12 trillion dollars.

Instead of telling us that “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter” and insisting on a big tax cut.
