That’s why it is called a game

by at 8:09 pm.

Now that the Tsongas Arena issue has moved (somewhat) out of the public domain, the Lelacheur Park issue is now moving to the forefront. In case you have not heard, the contract with the Spinners ended last December and the City through the Arena Stadium Commission is negotiating the terms of the new contract.

Since the original RFP went out, the Sun has published a number of articles on the issue. Most of them are still available on the newspaper’s website. Here is the link to the latest article, this one written by City Editor Chris Scott.

Back in January, when I initially posted on the ballpark lease issue, I mentioned that I thought the negotiations were going to be a bit “bumpy.” Little did I know how bumpy.

LiL has been told that the Spinners have solicited the assistance of the previous city manager to help them advance their case. If that is accurate, it certainly makes for intersesting political chatter. If I am not mistaken, a few years back the two had an adversarial relationship when the owner wanted to make changes to the ballpark, and the CM at the time opposed it. That is why I find politics fascinating. Never a dull moment.

Hmmm…food for thought…perhaps Campi’s ire over the whole issue provided the impetus for the frmr. CM’s involvement?

  2. K-R-S Says:

    Almost forgot…PLAY BALL!

  3. Prince Charming Says:

I do believe that their adversarial relationship goes a little deeper than that. Can somebody say “Winterfest”??

  4. K-R-S Says:

PC..whose adversarial relationship are you referring?

  5. Prince Charming Says:

The “Spinners” and the previous CM.

  6. K-R-S Says:

Competative sport makes for strange bedfellows…

  7. Prince Charming Says:

I have some trouble with this one because there’s no love lost between these two guys. If Weber has decided to lie down with the dogs, he’ll wake up with fleas. Mike Gallagher (who employs Eileen Donahue) is smarter that that. I really can’t see either of those two lawyers telling Weber that this move is OK.

  8. K-R-S Says:

MMMMMM. have to reserve comment on that one PC..

  9. K-R-S Says:

Then again, as atty. one is paid to and legally obligated to advocate for positions they may not agree with personally..

  10. Mr. Lynne Says:

Reading the article, the solicitor is absolutely right that they can’t approve a bid with lease terms that deviate from the RFP. They’d need to let this RFP expire and put out a new one, which is what I assume the team’s lawyers are advising them.

  11. Eleanor Rigby Says:

The only question I have with the Spinners/Cox affiliation is that Cox apparently is being used to put pressure or lobby someone on behalf of the Spinners since they already have a high profile legal team working for them.

So the question is who is Cox lobbying and what does he want?

Is it even ethical for him to be involved since he spent years as CM and only recently left the office?

  12. Prince Charming Says:

Ellie: you put “Cox” and “ethical” in the same sentence.

  13. inside Says:

In the old days, Tsongas would have gotten all parties into the room, banged heads together, and people would see his wisdom and error in their ways. The Congresswoman needs to step in here and work a little of the old Tsongas magic.

  14. Eleanor Rigby Says:

Cox ain’t Tsongas, not even close.

  15. Eleanor Rigby Says:

I posted this on Dick’s blog:

“I just read the editorial in my afternoon/morning paper.

Isn’t this the same paper that advocated against an expansion of the ballpark, at the Spinners expense when John Cox was CM, because Lowell wouldn’t support a full season Double A franchise? (according to the Sun)

I call on the alleged 4th Estate in this city, to tell us what John Cox’s involvement in this is and what is going on. From what I have learned the paper knew about this, knows about this and is sitting on this story!”

  16. walking the halls Says:

Don’t think anyone equated Cox to Tsongas. The latter was community oriented. The former is the opposite.

Personally,I predict it all works out

  17. Lynne Says:

Eleanor: and given the BFF relationship between Cox and Campanini, wouldn’t you *expect* that the paper, or at least certain leaders at the paper, knows all about it?

  18. The Lowell Sin Says:

Well Tsongas isn’t even Tsongas. Shares a last name. Bout it.

  19. Anonymous Says:

ER the afternoon/morning (or is that morning/afternoon?) paper is saving it for their VERY salacious and juicy entry in next Sunday’s The Column (as they have with several other stories they have been scooped on). “What former CM is *advising* a prominent businessperson on how to best respond to a newly reformulated RFP?…” Now doesn’t that just make you drool with anticipation?

  20. Anonymous Says:

Most of you LiL bloggers didn’t even know Paul Tsongas so please spare us!

  21. Lynne Says:

    Wow, sensitive much, “anonymous”?

  22. K-R-S Says:

If Anon only knew our demographics! I wouldn’t call it sensitive Lynne, I’d call it defensive.
