Sometimes Symbolism is Important

by at 5:16 pm.

I was surprised when I read Matt Murphy’s article in today’s Sun. Murphy reported that Congressional staff members received bonuses. Murphy reported that “More than 200 lawmakers from both parties gave their staffs in Washington, D.C., and at home year-end bonuses totaling $9.1 million.” Are Congressional staff members underpaid? Of course, my focus is the 5th District.

Murphy writes “U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas doled out nearly $30,000 in bonuses to 16 congressional staffers last year at a time when the national economy plummeted and her constituents faced layoffs and wage freezes.”

In response to the Sun, Congressperson Tsongas stated “Whenever taxpayers’ money is involved, we need to be very thoughtful and transparent. But I decided it was important to give modest recognition tied to performance because they have worked very hard in the best interests of the district.”

Yes, but we all are working hard. But some of us are getting laid off; some of us have to take a cut in pay; others such as City employees and Sun staff needed to take a furlough. And what about the hundreds of people who were lined up in front of the Lowell’s Doubletree yesterday waiting to get in to a Foreclosure Seminar?

In this case, the $30,000 that was handed out to Congressperson Tsongas staff in bonus may not be significant in comparison to the overall office budget. But sometimes symbolism is important.

On another note. This piece by Murphy reminded me of the work the Sun’s Washington reporter, Evan Lehman, would do. I miss his work. Also, articles like this remind bloggers like me of the importance of professional and impartial journalism.

I’m pretty sure this bonus comes directly from Tsongas, i.e. it doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything. I don’t see anything wrong, symbolically or otherwise. Almost all staffers are paid very, very meager salaries and could leave Capitol Hill and instantly earn more, even in these economic climates. Congresscritters should be willing to supplament their hard work and *very* long hours if they’re able to do so.

  2. Ryan Says:

(Not to mention, it’s very expensive to live in DC. Even with these meager bonuses, none of these staffers are living in penthouses… almost all of them probably have at least one roomate, if not 2 or 3. I did an internship in DC and was one of 4 in a 2 bedroom apartment.

She is completely put of touch with what is happening in the “real” world!

Ryan… from Niki’s own personal acct? Her campaign acct? Or her budget, as it is allocated through the House, which is still tax payer dollars.
Relative to bonuses given by other Reps, it would appear she was much more frugal.
Just an FYI, most folks don’t get bonuses, nor do they make $100K per year with airfare & other travel expenses that are reimburseable

I am busting my butt at work more than ever and my company told me and all my co-workers that there will be no raises this year. I didn’t hear a single complaint.

I have sent Niki Tsongas numerous letters over the past several months - which I’m sure some of her staffers have read. They all read about the same - “STOP WASTING MY MONEY!”

So many of the action she’s taken during her brief tenure have been a slap in my face and my wallet.

    Ryan:

According to Murphy’s article the funds came from “surplus money in their office budgets. Otherwise, that money would have to be forfeited if not spent before the end of the year.”

So the $9.1 million given out by Congress to their staff would have gone back to “our pockets.”

I liked Evan Lehman but he was far from impartial - very liberal.

  8. Prince Charming Says:

Surplus money?? Forfeited?? Back to the Treasury?? NFW!! Spend it!! I’ve been a democrat since before I was born but let’s set an example here. How can she criticize the corporate greed when she wouldn’t give back money she really didn’t need??

  9. MOONLIGHT Says:

Ryan, brian martin does not live in washington
he lives here in lowell with his late brothers wife
he already has 2 pensions on file already with the city
how much of my money does he need ???
    shame on nicola !!!

  10. Christopher Says:

Surplusses in line-items can’t just be reallocated on a whim. If that money was allocated to offices it can either be distributed to staff or disappear. Now if these same members of Congress start squaking for an allowance increase because they can’t afford to run their office, then I’d be concerned.
