I have finally arrived in the 21st century…I am posting this from my brand new laptop. Originally, I was going to go with something that I could install a shade of Linux on, with all open source software besides that, but the deal on this baby even with Vista was too good to pass up. So I went with the Evil Empire. That’s not to say that I might not eventually either ditch Vista or install Linux in parallel, as I’m curious what it’d be like…and I will be installing all open source besides the OS. Who wants to buy another expensive copy of MS Office and such? And I’m so sick of Outlook I could hurl.
There are real steals out there in the market…if you have the money and have been thinking of purchasing something significant for a while, now seems the time to do it. For us, most of our recent big purchases have been necessity (think: water tank), but this one was all pure luxury, baby.
I know very few people will care but I’m hopping around giddy so you just have to suffer this little party post.

Very exciting! I use a Mac with NeoOffice (OpenOffice on a PC) and it serves me well! Gimp is great for photo editing, Thunderbird is great for e-mail…

congrats! my only question: is it one of the new “mini-notebooks”, made specifically for mobile bloggers, or is it a full size desktop/laptop? those little ones are only like $300 and they are fantastic for simply getting online when you’re not at your desk.

Regular sized, actually quite big with a 15.4″ screen size. For me, this laptop will double as a mobile graphics backup machine, with Gimp and Inkscape in case I need to do work on the go so to speak, as well as developing my websites so a small screen would probably drive me into an early grave.

Glad to hear you are happy - tho I haven’t the foggiest idea what you are talking about. I definitely am not a computer person. If it weren’t for someone where I worked before I retired, I wouldn’t have mastered Excel. Am I to take it that you have a pc and not a mac now? At any rate, enjoy!!!

I just dumped the W on my home PC for Ubuntu Linux. Love it. Openoffice.org for the office suite. I still have to find a way to watch Netflix movies on line in Linux.
Have fun with the new toy. Bought my wife on of the D mini 10″ laptops. Her 214″ is fading fast.
And it is only “stealing a connection” if you get caught.
