As I previously posted, there’s a new market opening, appropriately enough, on Market St, and I poked my head in there today. It’s chaotic right now as they are getting ready for their first real open day tomorrow, but it looked fabulous. Square wooden shelves lined one wall waiting for merchandise, and the fresh produce looked stunning. (I kinda wish they’d been ready to take my order right there and then! I could use some fresh peppers and tomatoes for salads.)
They should be open tomorrow though I will be out of town, but I can bet I’ll be a weekly fixture there as I hate going grocery shopping and tend not to go more than twice monthly, but run out of a lot of things in the meantime. The convenience for downtown workers and residents is obvious, but I can also say that I look forward to the shopping experience based on my short, friendly conversation with the proprietors, and the nice look of the place.

It’s amazing to me what’s going on with downtown businesses these days. We’re in the middle of a deep national recession, but Merrimack and Market Streets look better, fuller, more vital than they have in years, if not decades. Between the daytime office crowd, the evening/weekend entertainment crowd, and the downtown residents themselves, Lowell has succeeded in establishing a very solid market for downtown businesses, just as it set out to do with its revitalization efforts.
This market is exactly what the city’s comprehensive master plan envisioned; the growth of the downtown residential community driving the establishment of retail businesses catering to them.
