There was a couple of good things that came out of the City Council meeting on Tuesday. One was the question posed by CC Bill Martin on the street work that has been going on in Gorham and Plain streets area of the City; around the cemeteries.
Those of us who live there have been suffering for over a year with the CSO (Combined Sewer Overflow) project and we are wondering now that the pipes have been replaced when will the street be repaved.
Well the answer is simple: “The trenches need to settle before they do the full paving. It takes about a year for everything to settle; it needs to go through a freeze and thaw cycle. So permanent paving should begin next year. If you live in that area, as I do, we had to deal with the CSO construction; the infrastructure changes for Lowe’s and the street and sidewalk reconstruction for Target, our cars have taken a beating.
Here is a 2 minute clip of the question and answer on this issue:

PC I think that money was part of the bond issue for the CSO. But I appreciate your cyncicsm! It makes sense to me, no sense digging up a newly paved road when a new underground main settles and breaks.
IMO Someone needs to tell Campanini this info. He’s always complaining about money going to pay salaries and not being used for roads, sidewalks, etc.
I’m not sure, but at least the Plain/Chelmsford and Industrial Ave stuff should be done faster than Gorham St. There isn’t much underground work there. The work around the Lowe’s project has made major progress very quickly. Actually pretty impressive.

I love CSO separation. The treatment plant will stink less.
I love Lowe’s. Much better than Home Depot.
I love Target. Much better than Wal-Mart.
I can grok skepticism, P.C., but you have to admit: the bin rollout has gone better than you ever dreamed it would.

I wonder if you’ll catch any trouble for calling Gorham Street “South Lowell.” That used to mean the area east of the river only.

I don’t believe a word of it. I live on Blossom St, and it’s brutal and expensive (had to fix the car 3 times recently because of damage to suspension). I’ve lived elsewhere, and it’s not like that elsewhere? When will the cobbles excuse come up?
