I just love the title of this one: “Gov. Patrick’s chief of staff quitting” - when in fact Doug Rubin is stepping down to go back to playing a roll in the Governor’s reelection campaign, which he can’t do while working for the state. Ie moving from one job (the state job) back to the political one.
Choice of words is everything. “Quitting” makes it sound like he’s leaving under bad circumstances, either through disagreement with his boss, or scandal or something, and leaving it all behind him. “Stepping down” or “resigning” is more accurate with less bad connotations, and just plain “leaving current post” even more accurate, but they just had to use the word “quitting” in the title.
A mild bias to be sure, but look for a lot more of this over the next year and a half!

When criticizing the press for its use of words, you may want to edit your own. Doug cannot play a “roll” in the governor’s campaign. He can, however, play a “role.” To quote your honor, “choice of words is everything.”
