More Candidates Join Council Race

by at 8:03 am.

Today’s edition of the Sun’s The Column reports that a few more Lowell residents have “jumped” in the race for the City Council. They are David Koch, who ran 2 years ago; David is President of the Back Central Neighborhood Association; Jose Gabriel (the Sun had spelled his name as Gabiel, but I do believe it is Gabriel); and Frederick “Freddie” Doyle.

The other challengers listed in the Sun are: Paul Belley, Ryan Berard, Franky Descoteaux, Curtis Freeman, Syed Hussain, Joe Mendonca, Patrick Murphy, Patricia Stratton, Ray Weicker and James Wojas.

A comment I have heard, mostly on the radio, is that these candidates are not known. Well, it is the radio hosts obligation to get to know them. I have met most of them and will make a point to meet all of them. I admire people who have the mettle to get involved as candidates in the election process.

But there are two other names mentioned. They are City Councilor Mike Lenzi and former City Councilor and Mayor Eileen Donoghue.

In his column yesterday, Kendall mentioned that School Committeeman John Leahy may make a run for the City Council “if his cousin, Michael Lenzi, decides not to run for re-election.” Apparently, Lenzi is sitting on the fence. A while back in a discussion with the paper, he indicated that he was leaning towards not running; now he is quoted in the paper “I do like it (City Council).” He may like it but this is a guy who has submitted about 4 motions in 2 years; I do not think I have seen him at any Sub-Committee he does not serve on. He may like it but does he have the time and more importantly the energy and focus.

And then there is Eileen Donoghue. She is quoted as saying “I’ve learned never to say never…It’s not presently in my plans.” But there is a month left before candidates have to submit their nomination papers. Who knows?

That brings the number to at least 21, which ought to be enough to ensure a primary. Note, there is a motion on the agenda for the next council meeting to follow up on the issue of whether there should be a primary.

  2. Ryan Berard Says:

I believe we should certainly have a primary this year. I admit that the cost is an issue and there is justification for not having another election at a time when tens of city employees are losing their jobs. Yet, this issue goes to the heart of democracy and whether or not elections are fair. I hope that if there is a primary this year, everyone will turn out for it so voices can be heard.

Also, in an attempt at shameless self promotion, there was an article published on Saturday in the Lowell Sun that talks about my campaign and the importance of this election. I think it adequately displays my ideas, as well as what I believe the future of the city looks like. In addition, the article clearly states, again, my position on the recent vote to eliminate the assistant to the city manager’s position.

As was previously mentioned here, I’m having a fundraiser this Thursday at the East End Club (West 4th Street), from 6 to 10pm. I hope to have a great turnout and I encourage anyone even vaguely interested in my candidacy to stop by.

  3. Bob Forrant Says:

The sitting councilors will not want a primary because some of the might get knocked out early in a contested election with so many candidates could draw voters to vote for the ‘newbies’ and not them.

  4. waittilnextyr Says:

The real issue in the primary is that it gives the newcomers additional exposure and a peek at where they have to improve their positions. The incumbents would prefer no primary for opposing reasons. Despite the added cost to the City, it is important for democracy that there is a primary.

  5. the conservative Says:

The truth of the matter is, there will be a primary. The city charter states, that if there are more than 19 city council candidates, there will be a primary on the first Tuesday in October. At this time, unless two people pull out of the race, there will be a primary.
In 2007 the city requested to the state to have the primary cancelled due to money constraints, the state secratery’s office indicated this will be the last time they allow that to happen.
Bob in this city there will be no councilers that will lose in the primary, they won too many elections to get ousted on a primary ballot, however, you may see a few below the all important #9 slot.

  6. Mimi Says:

Just read a tweet from Gourmet Gal that Mike Lenz might be buying Cavalrieo’s; the restaurant located in the Back Central Street area. If that is true, I wonder how this will impact his decision to run again.

  7. JMG Says:

Jose Gabriel will hold his first Fundraiser tomorrow, Wed. September 16, at 7PM., at the Portuguese American Center (Blues Club), 59 Charles St., Lowell.

Come and meet Jose, his family, friends and supporters.

  8. K-R-S Says:

    Thank you Jose.
