Fair Vote Lowell - Signature Sunday!!

by at 10:47 am.

Fair Vote Lowell is making Sunday, August 9th a big event for signature gathering. From Fair Vote:

Organized by the Fair Vote Lowell Campaign, the event anticipates that dozens of people will get over 2400 signatures in about four hours. The event is open to anyone who wants to help revitalize Lowell’s voting system. Participants will meet at 25 Fairmont Street in Lowell at 1:00 pm on August 9th to get their training and marching orders.

Armed with petitions, pens, maps, voter registration lists, food and drinks, this band of reformers are confident that the first step to changing Lowell’s voting system will be accomplished. Event organizers plan to end the day with more food, fun and lively conversation.

About Fair Vote: Fair Vote Lowell is an initiative to increase voter participation, open up opportunities for new candidates, and create local elective bodies that are representative of all residents in Lowell, Massachusetts. Our mission is simple: We’re here to transform Lowell’s voting system for local elections of city councilors and school committee from the current “Winner take All” system to “Choice Voting”, a system that is fair and promotes greater representation for all.

I’ll be there, and I expect you to be there too! No excuses.

Update: If you want be part of the signature gathering but can’t come on Sunday, please contact Victoria Fahlberg at 978-654-6957 x 102.

Also, if you simply want to sign and haven’t had the chance, or you want to help gather signatures but don’t have the time on Sunday, you are still welcome to come over and join us for some good food and good conversation. For all who care about a more democratic Lowell, time is running out and we need your help now.

FYI, we have found most everyone asked will sign (out of 100+ signatures we have gotten, 2 people refused). The key is ASKING! Yesterday, Gardner went by the Senior Dance and, from 10 - 11:30 p.m. got over 42 signatures. Thank you, Kevin Broderick, for this excellent suggestion. We even got signatures at the ElliotDogs & Blogs event–because even these likely signators had not been asked. So please, help push change forward by stepping up to the petition drive. I truly believe that if more of us live, not simply express or blog, our values, change will come sooner.

Thank you to all who have signed, who will make a point of finding a petition to sign and special thanks to those who help the effort this weekend.

I’d keep a sign-up sheet on me as I walk around Lowell just to be opportunistic. Is it possible to download a sign-up sheet? Can Fair Vote Lowell put up a pdf that one could download and print (with instructions) so that it’s even easier for people to chip-in?

  4. jdayne Says:

Is there a way to post a PDF here at the site? If so, I will post the petition. Alternatively, contact Victoria http://www.fairvotelowell.org/Contact_Us.html and I am sure she will get petitions to you.

PLEASE NOTE these very important “rules of the road” for the petition to make it through the appropriate scrutiny by the election department:

    1. You must have BOTH sides of the petition printed on a single sheet. That is, one side is the petition itself, the other where folks sign. Thus print or copy in duplex.
    2. Individuals who sign must SIGN and PRINT their names
    3. Write the ADDRESS at which they are registered to vote even if they have since moved within Lowell
    4. DATE (election department uses this to check against date individual registered to vote. Do not have someone sign who is not registered even if they plan to register. It will NOT count and can hurt.)
    5. DO NOT fill in Ward & Precinct. Election department does this.
    6. NO cross outs, check marks or other stray marks. If someone makes a mistake, simply have them start over on next line WITHOUT touching mistaken info/line.

Turn in to ONE Lowell at 9 Central Street or I am always happy to coordinate delivery.

If the PAC truly supports Choice Voting, time to get thought into action!

The petition, instructions, as sample script, and flyers that we give out as we explain to people the petition will be available to download by 3:30pm today (Friday) at the wwwfairvotelowell.org website. Please remember that although the petition prints as two separate pages, one page needs to be copied onto the other side and submitted as a single piece of paper. Thanks! Victoria

I participated in today’s ‘Fair Vote’ campaign and was able to gather 42 signatures. People are eager for change. In my journey I realized one thing … people are angry at the possibility of eliminating this year’s primary election. That was the #1 concern I heard today. Our legislatures better be listening to their constituents …. they want a primary in 2009 …. no ands, ifs or buts.

“Biased against minorities.” That is just illogical. First, it assumes that voters concerns are determined by the color of their skin. This would blasted as racist if a white man ever said this publicly.
Only eligible voters have a right to representation. Immigrants, legal or otherwise have no such expectation.
Personally, I expect any elected official to discharge their duty to voters without regard to race. So I don’t see how creating districts based on race is any less racist than a “white only” sign on a bathroom.
My wife filled out voter registration cards 3 or 4 times in Lowell. Yet she was never added to the voter rolls in Lowell. She had to keep going back to Boston if she wanted to vote. Maybe the clerk office needs a makeover.

  8. Lynne Says:

“Immigrants, legal or otherwise have no such expectation.”

I would very much HOPE they COULD expect some, considering the economic contribution these groups bring (even and especially illegal immigrants). However, legal immigrants pay taxes, are affected by government, and are allowed some benefits. How can they not expect some form of representation, even if it’s by having some of their citizened peers in government, or having advocacy groups advocate for them, or being part of those groups themselves? I think you are being extremely narrow minded.

For immigrants, their experience is very different than ours. They on average work harder, for less pay, than us borned citizens. Their experience is a very valuable one to have a voice; without immigrants, our country would not be what it is today, and will not succeed tomorrow. Therefore, asking for a system that would make it easier for some representation by minorities is only being fair. Do you think the Belvedere-based white guys really understand what it’s like to be them? Even if they sympathize, and more often than not I do not see it happening, the different perspectives in government can only strengthen it for all of us.
