This morning as I opened up the Lowell Sun on-line, and searched for the Column, this is what I found:
The Column, a look behind-the-scenes at local and state politics, can be read in the print editions of The Sunday Sun, and in the Sun’s Electronic Edition.
For home delivery, visit https://secure.medianewsgroup.com/subscriptions/html/index.jsp?siteid=105
To learn more about the e-edition, visit http://www.ethesun.com/
For a list of vendors who carry The Sun, visit http://www.lowellsun.com/vendors
I do not know how many people this impacts? It would be limited to those of us who don’t buy the hard copy and are interested in what The Column has to say, I guess.
It will of course prevent bloggers from linking to the paper. Don’t they want additional hits! Maybe we do not send enough traffic to their site.
As for a business model for the Sun, I have stopped long time ago trying to figure that out. I know that they have to be profitable in order to exist but I do not know if limiting viewers to your web site wil help accomplish that.
So, anything of interest in this week’s The Column?

A bumper sticker seen at Lenzi’s that read “Don’t Re-elect Kazanjian”! Other than that, not much.

I stopped getting the print edition months ago when I realized that I was able to go through it about 2 minutes but I do pick up the Sunday paper occassionally and I did today for the last time. There was a mention in The Column about Rita Mercier and Bud Caulfied referring to them as the “King” and “Queen” of Lowell. It didn’t who was what but I nearly lost my breakfast reading it.

Guess I’ll have to read the Topix board now for my hints, lies and allegations.
My favorite tech savvy move by the Sun was last week. When Clay Bucholz and the Red Sox defeated the Blue Jays it was breaking news for the next 5 days after it happened. The Red Sox had already visited two other cities by the time they fixed it.
No worries though, this whole internet thing is probably just a fad. They’ll be able to ride it out if they can just restrict what they have to offer to a few less people. With content like they offer who wouldn’t want to pay for it? Its not like advertisers value how many people view the media they place their ads in, right?

Mr Swell Head got his journalism award so how much more do we need to know?

More tech savvy work from the Sun. I just read this on the homepage, don’t know if it is still there or not:
Breaking News
E-mailed Campi, Krispy, Scotty and Lisa regarding story about shooting suspect being released despite request for a 58A hearing. Very bad dude, great story.

(I will pull the case in LDC on Monday. Lisa)
Other than that not a ton of stuff to follow today. Good luck.

From their point of view, though, doesn’t this make sense?
There have to be enough people who buy the Sunday Sun primarily for The Column (even if some local pols claim not to read it…yeah, right). That’s truly the ONE thing you’re going to get from the Sun that you’re not going to get anywhere else..the syndicated columns, sports scores, national news, etc. is easily obtainable elsewhere anyway. I guess there’s other hyper-local stuff (obits, milestone announcements) but The Column has a way wider interest base.
We media junkies have probably gotten spoiled over the past decade, where everything has been given away (hey, back in school I used to walk uphill both ways in the snow to buy the New York Times for the Thomas Friedman columns, b/c they were still considered *premium content* on the site ).
I bet the Sun figures there are enough people drawn to the Sunday column that they’re better off not giving it away.

Or, the Column will just not get talked about on the blogs, seeing as there’s no place to link to, and there will in turn be a little less buzz.
*shrug*
They gotta do what they think they gotta do, but it’s probably a bad move.
Then again, given what gets into the Column most weeks (rumor, innuendo, and total junk) maybe a little *less* attention to it isn’t a bad thing…

Short term it may make some sense, if enough people buy the Sunday Sun for the Column but long term, I would think they need to push people from the hard copy to the web site and figure out how to make that profitable.
But as Lynne said, we will not be able to link to it anymore.
