Move Lowell Forward’s Endorsement Process

by at 3:49 pm.

As mentioned previously, we’ve been working on putting together comprehensive information on our endorsement process. It takes time to do all of these things and I hope you’ll have patience with us. The full write up of our process is now on our website. Though the last thread on this got heated and such, it does appear that a lot of people are interested in what is going on, and that is a great thing.

The endorsement process employed took a LOT of time, effort, and grunt work - including following up with candidates to give them as much chance as possible to respond; gathering the responses, candidate literature, websites, and other campaign paraphernalia; pouring over the last two years of Council votes to determine which were pivotal; working out the fairest process to weigh incumbents and challengers equally; testing the scoring to be sure the process worked well and fairly; and of course, there were the hours put in by the endorsement committee to actually do the scoring.

There were no preconceived ideas of who would get endorsed going in - in fact, it quickly became clear that it was “anyone’s guess” who would come out on top, before the process began in earnest. Each member of the committee independently produced their scores on their own before coming together.

The most fascinating part to me was the consistency of scoring once the committee brought their scores together to average. This to me indicated that, despite the disparate backgrounds and ideology of the members of the committee, that our scoring system worked well. The largest portion of the score came from the questionnaire, so it really came down to the candidates’ understanding of the issues and their ideas for Lowell. To quote the website:

With regard to the internal consistency of the process, the overlap between individual committee members’ top 9 scorers before averaging, and the top 9 endorsed in the end, was considerable. While no one subcommittee member had all of their personal top 9 scorers (before averaging) represented in the final list (after averaging), three members had their top 8 candidates endorsed the other member had their top 7 endorsed. Furthermore, every candidate in the final endorsement list but one had at least 3 subcommittee members rate him/her in the top 9. The one exception candidate was represented in all four committee members’ top ten scoring.

I find that to be a very good outcome indeed.

For all the work the candidates did sending in their questionnaires, thank you so much. I know our list of questions was long and we didn’t make it easy for you! We do sincerely wish there wasn’t a cut off and that we could endorse more than nine without diluting the impact we could have.

I would like to make one thing clear, we will not be releasing individual scores. We are not interested in preferring any candidate on the slate over any other, and our list will be alphabetically, as they are on the ballot.

Robby said on another thread: Stop wasting time arguing here online, and start spending some time campaigning for who truly support.

    Consider it done.
    ………………….and then some!

  2. Jack Mitchell Says:

More here from my brother from another mother.

To Lynne, Yes it is me the “Troll” again, Read your reply to me and I just want to say, you are a smug, rude, “Blow-In” that believes you are the only one that has the correct opinion on what is being discussed on this snobbish blog of yours. Your superior attitude has made me re-think some of my choices for city council. If you are endorsing them it makes me think they may be as self-serving as you seem to be. So are we supposed to be thrilled because you decided to live in Lowell? Oh! Thank God Lynne is here to save us from ourselves! Really get over yourself.
Actually saw you at a politcal party and had to laugh at how important you seem to think you are. In fact someone else at this gathering also commented on your pompous attitude. Oh, and by the way, the people you supported in the last council election, well how many of them were elected??

  4. Old time Lowellian Says:

Lynne, Why not rank them like Choice Voting that LIL, and MLF are big time supporters are??

  5. Mimi Says:

    OT:

I do not know if I would characterize it as “big time supporters” nevertheless, you suggestion is a good one. We will take under advisement for the next process.

  6. Mimi Says:

    OT:

As for your comment #3, next time you see Lynne or anyone else on this blog that has a public identity, not a hidden one, please approach us and engage us in civil conversation. Maybe we will both learn something.

  7. Lynne Says:

To Old time on your last “suggestion”: Because that would be stupid. Seeing as we do NOT have choice voting right now, it means nothing. You’re just being divisive for the sake of being divisive, it would seem.

And, you’re the one that appears self serving. You spent the whole last thread basically repeating yourself ad nauseum in attack against us, literally over and over again, rather obsessively. Then you bring in your lovely “I’ve been here since I was borned” argument - the retreat of the townie, which is basically a tribal and silly argument. And you expect people to keep their mouth shut because they don’t have your history of being in Lowell, or at least that’s the attitude you seem to be espousing. Gee, wonder why I might not be happy to take that sitting down?

And I do love how people who have certain traits love to put them on other people. Anyone who knows me knows I am not arrogant. They also know I am not a crony. But over and over again the attackers come on this blog and claim both. It’s called projection.

  8. Old time Lowellian Says:

Lynne, You are arrogant, you just don’t see it in yourself……. Again, if you know whats best for the city why is your name not on the ballot? I agree with some of the endorsements of MLF but certainly not all…….. so I am not saying I totally disagree with you or your group but your attitude is “MY way or the Highway”. You may not realize it but you could do more harm to your preferred candidates. Again, as I pointed out earlier, the candidates you supported previously did not fair too well in the last election. I know, it’s not alway easy to accept criticism, but you really need to try to see others point of view and not take such offense when others don’t agree with you…..

  9. Michael S. Ready Says:

To Old time Lowellian: First of all, based on what you wrote in your Comment #3, the prize for most arrogant befits you sir. Do you ever pull out that dictionary of yours? Arrogant is haughty. And haughty reads “having or showing great pride in oneself and contempt for others”.

When you described Lynne in that string of personally demeaning (and entirely undeserved) words, “smug, rude, “BLOW-IN” and “pompous”, you are slandering her for having decided to move here as if, because of that, she is in some way inferior to you who, obviously, were born here. So, based on what you say and how you framed it, one could only surmise that you; 1. Have an elevated and unjustified level of PRIDE in yourself because you were born in Lowell and, 2. Having used “Blow-In” within a string of damning and insulting descriptors, have CONTEMPT for Lynne and by extension, all of those other many Lowellians who were not born here. Therefore, you are as defined, most arrogant!

Lynne Lupien is not arrogant. She is not rude nor smug nor pompous. She is a person who has her own opinions and has worked exhaustively and without financial compensation for many years to help make Lowell a better place for all of us. She is one of the most compassionate and giving individuals that I have ever had the pleasure to know. She has her own political and personal beliefs as you and I do, but is classy enough to never stoop to the loathsome level that you have stooped to here in lobbing such personally hurtful and insulting comments.

What I find most admirable about Lynne (and Mimi and Kristin) is that she has never hidden behind an anonymous moniker when espousing her views. More than we can say for you sir. Why don’t you think about that a bit. You shield yourself behind your ‘Old time Lowellian” pseudonym and enjoy the freedom that anonymity provides with no risk of outing yourself and the nasty mean spirited human that you are. She on the other hand, is courageous enough to expose herself to nasty individuals like you and your personally targeted insults.

If you’re such a tough guy, how about you let the world know just who you are. I certainly look forward to knowing.

  10. Old time Lowellian Says:

Still waiting to get an answer as to why Lynne, or maybe even Jack Mitchell who seems to have a reply to everything on this blog are not running for city council if they are so sure they know whats best for the city. Funny the voters did not think their candidate and co-blogger KRS, or for that matter Cliff (ran unsuccessfully twice for state rep)did not manage to win a seat.

Maybe the voters do not put much stock in all your tirades against the incumbents. So I will be voting for 2 of the candidates that you all endorsed. I have spoken to several voters about your endorsements and most all agree……. MLF is not moving forward at all……but pissing people off with the superior attitude…..and yes Micheal Ready, I guess I am arrogant as I do have great pride in being a lifetime Lowellian…… Oh and by the way I have no contempt for Lynne……. I just find her very narrow minded… Like I said before HER WAY OR THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE SHE TRUELY BELIEVES THAT NO ONE ELSE IS ENTITTLED TO AN OPINION UNLESS THEY AGREE WITH HER

  11. K-R-S Says:

OT, no disrespect intended, however, I don’t see you putting your name out there in offering your personal opinion. It’s very easy to offer up criticism of anothers point of view when one hidden behind a generic moniker.
So what, Cliff and I have run for public office. And? Have you?
In case you weren’t aware, ALOT of folks lose elections. Just because one doesn’t get elected, doesn’t mean their opinion is less valuable.

  12. Michael S. Ready Says:

Old time Lowellian: Again, you are wrong. If Lynne didn’t believe that you were “ENTITLED TO AN OPINION UNLESS THEY (YOU) AGREE WITH HER” (on her own blog nonetheless) than your acerbic and narrow minded opinions wouldn’t make it through the moderation process to be seen here on LIL. Imagine that OtL, these good people have to not only take the personally directed abuse that you seem to always be dolling out, but they than have to be the ones to hit the “submit” key that puts it out there for all of us to see. Seems a bit masochistic to me actually.

You really aren’t giving her and the others enough credit. Reread the responses here from Lynne, Mimi and KRS to your chronically abusive and acerbic comments and what do you see OtL? I see highly considerate, intelligently written and measured responses.

And finally, as someone who got off his ass and got the hell out of Lowell for the better part of 14 years, it is my opinion that there is nothing to be extraordinarily proud of in not having left anywhere. For those of us who left Lowell and returned or those who are giving Lowell a chance as their newly adopted home, we all bring fresh ideas, alternative perspectives and the realization that Lowell is at present in great need of fix’n. For we have something that you will never have; and that is a means against which to compare.

  13. Ryan Adams Says:

OT said: “why is your name not on the ballot?”

Isn’t it inherently arrogant to run for office? Sorry, Old Timer, but your faux-argument isn’t consistent. More importantly, though, I find it rather tiresome when people try to shout down real grassroots, community-organizing efforts. It’s so much easier to write a few snippy comments online than organize passionate on behalf of an issue you care deeply about, such as the governing of a city. Don’t like the endorsements? Create your own city movement, raise funds, start a committee, create a process and do your own endorsements.

Agree or disagree with Lynne’s perspective, it’s impossible to say she’s not in this because she deeply believes the city should move in a different, better direction. Instead of launching personal attacks and tirades, OT, why not make an argument on the merits?
