A buzz in the political air!

by at 7:42 am.

Yesterday morning during his regular Thursday morning appearance on WCAP, political commentator and radio host Warren Shaw discussed the upcoming Lowell municipal election. He characterized the interest has limited and thought that the incumbents will most likely be elected.

As I had stated in a previous post, last night there were three campaign [K. Broderick; R. Berard and J. Mendoca] fundraisers, and I attended all three. All of them were well attended and for the most part, the crowd differed at all three places. A lot of the other candidates were in attendance at the various parties. I saw CCs J. Milinazzo and B. Martin; Challengers F. Descoteaux, P. Belley, P. Murphy and SC J. Doherty, C. Martin, J. Leary, J. Leahy and D. Conway and Challenger A. Laraba. It was great to see so many young people at Ryan’s gathering.

But at all three of them, there was energy and a buzz, which I did not see two years ago. Furthermore, there is a desire to change the course we are on.

I do not know if we will see a larger turnout at this year. But if we don’t, it will not be for the lack of trying. I do not know if the face and make-up of the City Council will change. But I do know there are a lot of pe0ple out there who are not happy with what has happened these past two years and want to see a change. Now it is up to us to go and get out the vote.

Your right mimi–broderick had a great crowd-
berard did also—there is going to be change
we just need to seize the moment-and get out the
vote-make the changes-vote for the slate that lynne
    and cliff put out there.

  2. Anonymous Says:

Could you ask Bill Martin the details of his motion to try to change the zoning laws for in-law apartments. It would be important for those in the city especially Centerville and the Acre to know what he proposed and how hard the neighborhoods had to work to stop him.

  3. Bob Forrant Says:

There is a game that folks who want the status quo - lord knows why - play. Its to play down interest every chance they get, say folks don’t care all that much, and in essence discourage people from voting. Then, guess what, the status quo prevails and the same cast of characters that by their words discourage turnout, blab on about how folks don’t exercise their right to vote! There oughta be a law:)

That may work this time, maybe not. There is so much in the news about councilors and lots and lots of kitchen table economic angst and usually things like this create some interest and generate the motivation to vote, even if it is to affirm the given. But, in this election cycle there is little that merits affirmation from where I stand. Many ont he council are like the folks on the Titanic, waiting for the city to sink instead of being proactive.

Smiling pols at a Target opening aside, if you are a working person in the city or a small business owner, or a parent attempting to save some momney for your kid’s college fund, Target doesn’t mean so much in the larger picture and for small businesses may cause serious harm.

The state revenue shortfalls are going to be felt come January here in Lowell - make no mistake about it. if you like the way decline is being managed thus far - keep the rascals in - if not open the windows, let fresh, young air move through the council chambers and put some shiny new faces into the seats too many councilors believe are theirs by birthright. And, while there vote for choice voting so that on future Tuesday nights our elected leaderships starts to reflect Lowell’s true richness & diversity.

  4. K-R-S Says:

sorry folks I let the last Anon comment through w/out thinking. That said, the whole inlaw apt-zoning change thing is SO 4 years ago. Let it go.

  5. Jack Mitchell Says:

Admin, I think you shouldn’t block anonymous comments. Just assign them a name. ;v)

  6. Gordon Pickguard Says:

I would agree with Bob about the “status quo”, particularly when it comes to the old guard media outlets in the city like the Sun and that s*** kicker from Dracut on WCAP. They are only comfortable with the politics of the back room deal, the wink and the nod. So, “pay no attention to that man behind that curtain with the cow.”

  7. Kim Says:

I had two elderly neighbors walk up to me that saw my political signs and they noticed a few that were missing. They said they follow what is going on in the city and the candidates that got their vote every year are not this year especially M & M. My younger neighbors have also made similar comments about not voting for Kaz and M & M this year. I am just hoping that the residents making comments on the street make it to the polls. (which of course I strongly encouraged)

  8. waittilnextyr Says:

Have you noticed Bud brings Rita and Kaz along for picture-taking at every ribbon cutting ceremony these days? They recognize that the people have their brooms out, if not their pitchforks.

  9. Kim Says:

    waittilnextyr,
You are right on with that comment. Parents at my daughters school were joking about this photo today-

Who made those three the welcoming committee? Do all the other cc members know about these events and choose not to attend?

  10. Kim Says:

Oh my god! I did not even read the article that went with that photo. Is Bud’s new tagline Move Lowell Forward?

“Target covers about 150,000 square feet, and gives the plaza an anchor store that it has been missing since Hannaford closed in 2006.

“That’s three acres of shopping,” Caulfield said. “I’d say that’s moving Lowell forward.”

  11. ned Says:

Warren Shaw is a tool. Warren wouldn’t know a buzz if it sat on his head and farted. There IS a buzz. There are new people interested and involved in this process, and I am looking forward to seeing the results in November.

  12. Mimi Says:

    ned:

That’s not what you said when he had your co-blogger, the Mark, on. You are just jealous cause he mentions LiL and not mrmillicity. LMAO

  13. Observant One Says:

Yes Kim, Mayor Bud is managing to inject the “Move Lowell Forward” tag line into every interview and/or speach that he gives. Is he looking to fool people into thinking that he has received an endorsement from the Move Lowell Forward PAC or is he just working to antagonize the opposition? Ummm…

Nonetheless, it looks like Mayor Bud has stolen MLF PAC’s mojo.

  14. Eleanor Rigby Says:

What really ticks me off is the Lowell Sun and the lack of coverage they are giving to the CC and SC races! Sure, they are running candidate “profiles” but that is hardly issue coverage.

Why aren’t they running stories about what the next council is going to do about the latest round of state budget cuts? What the school board plans to do? etc etc etc.

Seriously, they are quick to lament the decline in voter interest and yet they do NOTHING to inform the public.

I read with interest when Wallace wrote the Sun was going to launch a get out the vote campaign…what is it? Ads in the paper paid for by various businesses!

It’s time for them to start doing their jobs and informing the public about the issues and getting reaction from candidates on what they agree with, disagree with etc.

I am seeing more coverage (provided by AP) of the Senate race in Dec and Jan than I am seeing of our local race!

  15. Bob Forrant Says:

ER I agree. Problem for the Sun is to cover the campaign accurately they must contradict the long-time CC members who prattle on about how the city is moving forward. Bricks alone and large parking lots in front of big box stories that will remain 85% empty 10 months out of the year are not an answer to the structural problems that ail not just Lowell but the entire region and the state too.

We have at least three major problems right now: a profound lack of good jobs for people and Target is not the answer here; a serious crisis with foreclosures and rising homelessness and another condo project opening is not the answer here; and a budget crisis that is going to sharply affect city and school budgets beginning in January and canceling the primary to save arounf $30K is not the answer here.

The majority on the current council lack any vision regarding the city’s future. And, for the most part the leadership of the Sun doesn’t have much of one either. It is easy to remember the past and lionize Paul Tsongas - - but my guess is Mr. Tsongas would be sharply critical of the current leadership on the newspaper and the CC for their twin failures to energize a more broad-based electorate and for the lack of progress made in building a much more participatory democracy in Lowell.

Until people sitting on leading boards and appointed committees and in elected office reflect the diversity of Lowell, simply put, Lowell CANNOT move forward! And the smiling faces of Bud, Rita and AK at a thousand ribbon cuttings splashed across the pages of the Sun simply stall this hard, fact-based reality.

  16. joe from Lowell Says:

I don’t know what Warran Shaw is talking about. I’ve had people give me an earful about the incumbents, and Kazanjian in particular.

  17. joe from Lowell Says:

Don’t be bashing the Target. No, it’s not an answer to the structural problems of the regional and national economy - but it’s pretty sweet if you live here!

  18. waittilnextyr Says:

“a profound lack of good jobs for people and Target is not the answer here;”

I wouldn’t call that “bashing”, but rather pointing out the reality that a national retail store doesn’t create many good jobs in the area. You can be sure that with Target (and Lowe’s) more money will leave the area than come into it.

That doesn’t mean Target is bad, it is just not an economic growth engine for the area. However, it appears to be good as a convenient retail outlet, and beneficial as long as it doesn’t detract from the local small businesses.

  19. joe from Lowell Says:

One things about Target and Lowe’s - Lowell has long had a much smaller retail base than comparable cities in Massachusetts, probably because of our proximity to the New Hampshire border. This has put an extra burden on Lowellians as consumers, and as taxpayers.

There are some interesting comparisons between Lowell and other cities in this regard in the Comprehensive Master Plan.

  20. ned Says:

As I mentioned before, the only time Warren is even worth a listen is when “The Mark” is on.

  21. ned Says:

Also, Bob’s post was so good it knocked the wind out of me.

  22. TPetty Says:

I’d love to see 3 incumbents and 6 new faces on the CC. But, this being Lowell, and the apathy that is entrenched with the voters, I believe that Shaw is right - that on November 3rd 8 CC incumbents will be re-elected and 1 fresh new face will come onto the scene - despite the buzz that you’re hearing at political parties. I hope I’m wrong! I wish to God, that I’m wrong. As for the School Committee race - that’s just a disgrace.
