Today, after reading a Letter-to-the-Editor in today’s Sun asking President Barack Obama to “Leave the salutes to our military men and women”, I immediately contacted one of Lowell’s combat veterans I know (yes, I know a few) Cliff Krieger. I figured since the President is the Commander in Chief, he can and should salute. It is one of the great things about this country, that the leader of the armed forces is a civilian, one elected by the people
The author of the letter had written:
I admit, the president is to be commended for being present at the arrival of our fallen the other morning at Dover AFB. But seeing him saluting at attention at the end of a military formation was inappropriate to say the least. Then, I watched him march with a military formation onto the ramp of a “military” transport (airplane), which was carrying the returning heroes? I have never seen such actions from a sitting president.
And this is in part Cliff’s reply to my e-mail questioning whether President Obama’s behavior was outside of accepted proper military etiquette:
Frankly, President Obama rendered a very fine hand salute at Dover. I was impressed. The salute is a sign of respect, and I was always taught that while the junior salutes first, it is the duty of the senior to return that salute, thus showing the mutual respect that exists within the chain of command. I think that the President is showing that mutual respect.
Also, as to marching up the ramp into the aircraft, that might just be a natural thing. I wasn’t there and didn’t see the video. So, this is just
my somewhat informed take on it. The ramp makes noise with each footstep, or at least that is my experience. That rhythm might cause the President to naturally fall into step with the others, who are in step.
Here is the link to the C-Span video on youtube. The ceremony took place at 3:40 a.m. and I might add very moving. So Barack, keep on saluting!

Admittedy I was not a supporter of our president and I think all politicians should be criticized when it appropriate but saluting being a bad thing? You have got to be kidding.

My understanding is that the practice of a President saluting only goes back as far as Reagan, who did it to show his support and respect for our armed forces. Clinton was chastised by Jesse Helms (for what that’s worth) for not, in his opinion, saluting properly. It is not required for the President to return a salute as far as I know.

I think Christopher has it right about Reagan, at least as far as memory allows.

Chris is correct, Reagan began the practice. Like Cliff, I agree that Obama has a darn good salute, very crisp.

Actually I googled it and on a military chat forum they say Truman was the first to salute, not Reagan however Ike did not so that is probably how the practice faded until Reagan.
Military personnel do not need to salute a ranking officer if they are not in uniform however if I were in the military and the President, as Commander-in-Chief were in the area in civilian clothes, I would salute and if the Commander-in-Chief wants to return that salute who is going to tell him no? He holds the highest rank in the U-S military!
So just to step back…some right wing nut is complaining that President Obama is showing respect to our troops?

This has to be one of the single most ridiculous topics that are up for discussion. First of all, GW put a moratorium on any press outlets showing the returning coffin’s of our fallen soldiers for the simple fact that he didn’t want people to be able to “count” how many were actually dying over there! GW never once went to Dover to salute the bodies of the men and women that he sent into harm’s way! Too me that’s a despicable way to treat the fallen by our then commander in chief!
Obama does the only thing he can find that would be a proper way of commemorating the memory of these fine people and now he’s being rung up for it! The pundits in this regard need to really get a life.

Do we KNOW it was a “right wing” nut?

At least he didn’t stop to give any “shout outs” to Dr. Joe Medicine Pro, before he saluted the coffins…
November 9th, 2009 at 11:37 am
JK…how about a shout out from me to you…GROW UP! Talk about a moronic response to a very serious issue. But again…JK’s just taking advantage of his/her right to express his/her thoughts! I guess that’s the price we all pay for freedom…
November 9th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
I believe the moronic response to a serious issue was Obama’s. How on earth could a president 1) EVER think that giving a “shout out” was appropriate, and 2) EVER think it was appropriate to tell knock knock jokes, swagger, and thank folks for a great conference, before addressing the worst attack on a US army base domestically in history… All politics aside, it was insensitive, politically tone deaf, and unbecoming for the president of the united states. Behavior like that gives me serious pause to question the sincerity of his “salute”.

Joseph Medicine Crow was a Congressional Medal of Honor winner who fought in World War Two.
jk, why do you hold veterans in such low esteem? Or is is only those who come from minority groups?
November 9th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Big Dog: “serious issue” ??? Get a life man! If this is what the majority calls “serious” then no wonder it’s taken decades to provide health care to 100% of Americans!
November 9th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Bernie, nothing could be further from the truth. I respect veterans immensely. Your facts are incorrect: “Obama incorrectly called Joe a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, which he is not. Joe is in fact a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our highest civilian honor, which Obama himself presented.” (NY TIMES)
November 10th, 2009 at 7:14 am
and since when does being critical of Obama instantly make you a racist?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Are you serious? One cannot disagree with the present administration without being labeled a “right-wing nut” and a “racist”?
I would be willing to wager that you and Bernie agree on many more issues than you disagree on. Don’t let the sensationalistic, 24/7 news entertainment juggernaut have you lose sight of that.
In my opinion, this kind of sniping is exactly what the political elite, both Republican and Democrat, require in order to continue sucking America dry.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
JK…. Fact is that you were off the track in #11…stick to the point…we were discussing the presidential salute not health care…and not how Obama reacted PRIOR to the incident at Fort Hood!
November 10th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Start passing out those Purple Heart bandaids that were handed out at the 2004 GOP convention! What a fine way to honor veterans wounded in action…make fun of them!
GW ignored fallen men and women coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan
Obama salutes them
Yep, those pinko Democrats!
November 11th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Right on Eleanor Rigby…..I’m a proud pinko democrat here as well! AND I wear no wristbands….if the cause was right I would.
